Honestly the midsize truck market is red hot right now between the colorado, tacoma, ranger and even the nissan pro4x. However, after waiting years to pull the trigger, I'm going with the Tacoma. Over the years I've owned many brands of vehicles and Toyota has always stood out and the Toyota tax has always applied. Its too early to outright claim dependability for the tacoma, but they've got a proven track record and I absolutely love the new interior.
I was excited to buy the new Taco. watch TFL blow the front diff of their brand new one up though, climbing a mild hill. looking deeper into it, it looks like toyota reliability is a total sham, at least when it comes to the new gen tacomas and tundras. now i have no idea what i'll buy, but ZR2 colorado is at the top of the list.
@@lgbnz meanwhile my friends brand new Chevy has spent more time at the dealership than in his hands and he's about to initiate the lemon law to get rid of it. As far as Toyota reliability, I have a Toyota now, it's my second one and they've been very reliable for me. For sure TFL broke their ADD, but as far as I can tell, they are the only ones and even Toyota said it shouldn't have broken with what they were doing. Others have taken their Toyota into stickier situations and have had positive results, so I'm just chalking that up to a fluke. It's too early to say yet that the Tacoma 4th Gen is a dud based on a single break out of hundreds of thousands of trucks.
@@jackcrackerman not saying that chevy is reliable. toyota may have the benefit of the doubt for its long history of quality and reliability, but the trucks coming out of Mexico are showing smoke. TBD if there's fire. but it stopped me from buying a new Taco, I will have to revisit options later.
@@marklihsu Yeah, you can get the long bed on that as well. I'd like to see them offer that with the coil spring suspension in the rear as well, but it is a legitimate option for those of us who want the length.
I like the Colorado body and front more than the Tacoma, especially the grill. As for which I prefer...I have spent 20 years not happy with Chevy (all I could afford with a part-time job and full-time school were junker Cavaliers, and now have a very mediocre Cruze), but for price, design, and assets/capability then I would consider Colorado over Tacoma.
Chevy might be the better value here but in past generations one could buy the Toyota, take it for a one year test drive then get back most of your money. That said Toyota dropped the ball with their stupid pricing. Enthusiasts won't care and just fork the $$ over. They will not be bringing in many new buyers that are just comparison shopping. Should have kept the prices more competitive. I'm a 2022 TRDOR Tacoma owner and I'm sitting this new generation out. Not paying $10k more for the same truck and trim level I have now. Plus I like my V6 for the time being even if its not as refined as this new Tacoma. If I HAD to buy a new truck tomorrow I might be looking at a Colorado.
I own a 2017 TRD Sport. Also just got a 2024 Canyon. Paid 31.5 K for the Tacoma when new. Similar one new was stickering out at around 47k. Just couldn't do it when I could get a well equipped Elevation for 40k that had in my opinion a better engine (and looks too). Time always tells of course.
Was also faced with this decision a couple weeks ago. Was really only interested in a new taco but when I went to test drive one the dealer told me they weren't even expecting them until summer. I was gonna wait but on my way home I stopped into Chevy to see what they had...which was almost nothing as well😂. But they did have probably the very last brand new 23 colorado Z71 possibly in the state. At first the juxtaposition was odd because I was definitely preparing to get a taco and the styling is so different but once I got used to it I honestly preferred the more luxury look and feel of the Colorado. So I ended up going with that and the very next week Toyota called to say they got some 24 Tacomas in. I don't regret my decision and I saved some money.
@@alanmartinez386 I think they've hammered out a lot of the software issues they were having early on. Haven't really had any issues. I guess time will tell with the engine but I don't really believe in the war on 4 banger turbos. Every group of brand loyalists hate another brand and have their own issues. Since most companies are switching to similar builds and the dated frontier is the only 6 cyl left, it wasn't much of a factor in my decision.
Tacoma is way too expensive and anemic. Power is weak, and gas mileage sucks ...so Chevy all the way! Kudos on the interior and exterior! About time!!!
The long-term quality of both the Colorado vs 2024 tacoma redesign has not been determined yet. I would say tacoma has the edge but I do like the Colorado design quality much better.
Imo Colorado has the advantage here in terms of engine because the 2.7 litre v4 in the colorado has been used in the Silverado for over 5 years now and they're holding up surprisingly well. They're using the same engine in this truck The Tacoma on the other hand, they're using a newly introduced v4 turbocharged engine. I would bet on the Colorado personally being more reliable, at least until 2026, when the bugs are fixed for the Tacoma
It’s not about being on a team. I own a Toyota lol. But the new Canyon/Colorado is a better truck than the Tacoma in every way except the rear suspension. And it’s apples-to-apples less expensive. And you can order what you want. And not pay dealer markups. And it looks better. And…
@@Holden-McGroin yes but it’s a poorer financial decision. Toyotas hold their resale value over Chevys. if you’re in the market for a used vehicle, I’d buy a Toyota over a Chevy any day of the millennium. And despite a couple of hiccups on the first production Tacomas , I guarantee you that the Toyota turbo will outlast the Chevy turbo
The taco seems like the engine was hi strung and the infotainment screen also looks obnoxiously large and unappealing. I might have a bias though, 23at4canyon
Aside for the tech what's new in the colorado that didn't previously exist in the chevy line up? The same engine has been used in the silverado since 2019
In January 2020 I purchased a brand new 2020 Tacoma SR 4wd/ 4 doors with a regular size bed. It drove awful. It had issues starting. It wouldn't start when turning the key. When I took it to the dealer they said " that's normal with the new models " well not too long after that Toyota recalled over 100000 vehicles due to bad fuel pumps. The interior of then my Taco' felt so cheap and poorly assembled. There was imperfections and gaps in the door panels and dashboard. THE transmission made the engine rev really high. Long story short I sold it that same year.
Wow...same here. I had a 2020 TRD Offroad, and I got rid of it in exa tly SIX MONTHS. Handled like crap...clumsy steering...the worst seating position of any vehicle I've ever owned...and you couldn't add even slightly bigger tires without rubbing everywhere. Big disappointment.
@@MrHand-ih4sz i drove both a 2021 and the new 2024 its a night and day difference when it comes to handling. the 2024 is way better in comfort and the way it steers they also fixed the seating position for the 2024 year model so it doesnt feel like your laying down in it. its so much better then what it use to be. the only thing i'd say toyota is still struggling with as the previous model is fit and finish problems. i personally didn't notice anything at all in mine. but I've seen plenty of videos of people with the new tacoma that have large gaps in-between spots on the new one.
Dude just recently the Colorado has been a damn good little truck, 2018s are selling for $30,000 still Their diesel option at the time was a huge hit for truck enthusiasts and reliable. There's many model years were colorado has proven itself to be a pretty reliable option. The engine in the colorado has been used in other models since 2019 so it has a good track record so far.
Reliability is thrown out the window with this one sadly, I'd bet on chevy being more reliable here this time around until 2026 and then I'd give it to the Tacoma when they fixed the bugs
Colorado all the way, I gotta 2018 diesel with 191k.miles, lives with a 4500lbs camper on it more than not, rock solid no problems . Know the tacos good truck but Chevy's lil better at heavy duty junk imop
Is the Z71 more like a TRD Off-Road premium trim? Or is there a straight $5k difference between the two? The SR5 and standard TRD Sport prices must be more comparable…?
The Colorado looks WAY better. I have always thought most anything Toyota makes is ugly. They seem to design things with an odd mix of lines and curves that don't quite go together. And I really dont like the dash in the Tacoma. The Colorado looks much nicer inside and out.
I drove both and bought the a Z71 Colorado with all options, I simply liked everything about the Colorado better. I was actually disappointed in the Tacoma. I would of bought the Nissan Frontier and the New Ford Ranger over the new Tacoma. I Drove all 4 trucks.
I've owned toyotas all my life. But I'm still going Colorado all the way. I need that punch and 360° cam Chevy trucks last long enough. I don't see any reason to pay an extra 5k.
Toyota Tacoma for me I’ve owned Toyota Corollas been in Camrys, Prius & always great reliable gas efficient cars well made so I’m definitely getting 2024 Toyota Tacoma
I like the Toyota the exterior and interior are not over the top and at the end of the day this is just a truck to haul your family around. These manufactures have to stop putting all this luxury garbage into there trucks, if i want luxury i would of just bought a German car.
Tacoma for sure. I'm just a Toyata guy, had my Rav for 15 years with no major issues aside from regular maintenace. Just got a Gen4 TRD Sport, double cab shortbed and I lvoe it. Also, this vid should be redone when the IForceMax Tacomas drop.
Just traded in my 2019 Chevy Silverado RST Z71 in on that exact same color and equipment 6' bed Tacoma as well last week. Very Happy so far.(BTW: Colorado not available in 6' bed)
Price alone will cause the tacoma to lose all these type of comparison tests. Toyota used to be a decent deal but now has gotten extremely greedy and will just continue to use their buyers to pay for their mansions and yachts. Their profit margins have got to be through the roof.
I’ve always liked how the canyon and the Colorado look over the Tacoma, but with this new years look on the Tacoma is way changed this for me. Bought a new taco and I love it!
Toyota has the better color selection, but overall I dig the Colorado better. The fact that it is considerably cheaper helps as well. Wish Chevy offered some of the colors the Taco comes in. The interior of the Taco is a mixed bag - some trim levels has blue accent panels but overall that Toyota interior is very busy and messy looking. The Chevy interior looks more cohesive, it just needs a splash of color to bright it up a little.
You are correct, Andre’s Colorado did pull the TFL Tacoma out of a bad situation after it had a front-end failure. However, that very same Colorado has also had its own list of issues and failures. It was bricked by the OTA software update and its cameras have died. Neither of these new trucks is perfect, many of us are just waiting a year or two to see how these issues get resolved before we make a decision. There are plenty of Chevy owners that are hesitant about buying a new Colorado after experiencing various issues with their Chevy vehicles over the past several years.
I ENJOY THAT INTERIOR JUST NOT THE COLOR SCHEME, super frustrated that Chevy only gives the gray /neon green or yellow stitch interior on the ZR2. cuz i test drove a Z71 and the arm rest was uncomfortable after awhile it felt abrasive , rough texture which might be easier for keeping clean or that "rugged" feel but then the brother GMC canyon i hate that faux brown leather going across the dash i just wish interior was more customizable.
I like both trucks. However, the chevy is over busy on the front end. Nearly metal origami. Also, that effeminate gear shifter( along with those vents) looks right out of the parts bin.
The shit that people need to tell themselves lol. Our ‘15 Canyon went 375k before oil pump went and lost the engine, current ‘19 Canyon is at 307k no major issues.
Chevy and Ford choosing to do camo interiors is such a slap in the face to consumers. “What you don’t want camo?! Well I guess your only option is to spend $5k more for leather! Gotcha!!!”
Like the chevy. For the truck and the price. But question reliability. Will i need a new chevy in 3 yrs or buy a tacoma and keep it for 10 yrs. So the tacoma is cheaper in the long run. If the Toyota is truly reliable in 2024.
Tacoma looks good outside but I hate the dash. Looks like they glued an iPad to the top of the dashboard. Looks very out of place. Chevy ZR2 looks like the move, especially once they’ve been out for 6-12 months and you can pick one up for $42k with 5k miles on it.
Pay 5k more for a Tacoma and don’t even worry about it. Cause in 5 years you’ll sell it for $35k and the Colorado will either be in the shop or selling for $15-$18k
