Great review, camera facing forward wih a rider's view of the road and instruments. No music so I can here the exhaust. Brilliant stuff. Also I like the look and feel of this bike even when I have a T100!

here's a little tidbit you probably didn't know, I test rode one two days ago, the ergos are exactly the same as the speed twin 900 !, that is, the seating position, bar reach foot peg position. I went and sat on a new 900 at the dealer to confirm this, even though it's a smaller bike , Triumph is very smart. , folks can transition right to a speed twin 900. I found the torque to be right there at low rpms, and it's less Viby than I expected.

Nifty little bikes Dan, I agree that the Speed is probably the better bike and cheaper too! It would be fun for experienced riders too.

Wife ordered hers back in October and is due for delivery in March. Managed to get a black one, as if I'm honest it was the lesser of the 3 evils that are the tank design ! We'll probably end up spraying it anyway. Test rode both bikes back to back last week and although the scrambler was good the speed was great - Almost as much fun as my Supermoto! Seat height/weight was perfect for my wife - scrambler was a bit too tall. Triumph are gonna sell a load of these. We've ordered a fair few extras such as a comfort seat, lower crash bars, fly screen etc. Heated grips/handguards are in the pipeline as well. Can't wait for hers to arrive 😊

On the price front, and like the 350 enfield's with a £5000 new price it stands to reason that the 2nd hand price will be low, 12 months later you should be able to get it for around £4000 so there should be a few bargains to be had 😊

When these 2 bikes were first announced, if I had to choose one , I would have leant towards the scrambler, the seat height would definitely suit my frame better. A short question for you Dan. This isn’t on my list of bikes, but a new tourer is. What would you go for having a pillion rider? *The new Tiger 900 GT Pro *The Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello or… *The Suzuki GSX-S 1000 GT? Three very different beasts at approximately the same price. No of course I haven’t test driven the new Tiger yet, living in snowy Sweden n all, but seeing I really love the 1200 and test drove that monster last year I get how it might be. The Suzuki is so powerful but the Guzzi has soul… So. Given you would have a pillion rider fifty percent of the time.. which one would you choose?

Hiya Dan, a really good review, thanks for taking time to post it. I have already placed an order for a Speed 400 in blue, but tested the Scrambler 400X on Friday, the Speed 400 was booked out for 2 test rides already, yet when i returned the Scrambler, the Speed was still there. I totally agree with your comments on the vibrations, not uncomfortable, but still noticeable, and the front brake seemed to have good instant bight, but faded under harder pressure, maybe the pads need to bed in more, but it was a concern. Also, the bike i rode had a sticky gearbox, and was reluctant sometimes to change up from 3rd to 4th. Apart from that, the bike was very nimble and nippy, especially doing roll on`s in 5th and 6th, a very torquey little bike. Once again, a great review, and yes, i did watch your review of the Scrambler 400, and yes, i have just subscribed. One last thing, I think you`ll find the UK bikes are built in Thailand, whereas the bikes built in India are for the Indian sub continental countries, as they have to be built to a different spec.

Hi Dan, from a fellow vlogger and Royal Enfield Classic 350 owner's perspective, the RE brand does talk to a different customer, and have a firm and loyal fan base. That said, I really look forward to throwing my leg over the Speed 400, and I although I know the two bikes can't really be compared, there is talk of RE bringing out a 450 Hunter using the liquid cooled lump, found in the new Himi. Now that would/could be a true battle, which I would dearly love to be involved in. Great review's of both the Speed and X. All the best.
@2ndcornets
@2ndcornets 5 месяцев назад
Reckon I will swap my RE Meteor for one of these, largely because RE chose to strangle the top end performance out of their 350 engine, whereas this bike has almost twice the power from a pretty similar sized engine.

Great review Dan as always 👏 I got to test ride the scrambler 400x over the weekend. I agree with everything you said. So much bike for the money and incredible value considering the quality of finish. When I tried finding negatives I came up with "maybe a little vibey" and "the mirror wobble at speed isn't great, but not bad at all". I really struggled to find any negatives. Such a cracking bike, think Triumph nailed it with these 400s.

The demo bike was displaying 64mpg. Finish is superb. Note that UK models are being built in Thailand, not India. But guess parts are made all over the place. Heated grips not yet listed, think Triumph are still sorting out the software.

So been riding the Speed 400 since mid of October. Feels like just the kind of motorcycle I have been wanting. No real negatives to speak of. There was a random stalling issue in 2nd or 3rd gear, which is already resolved with an ECU update. The headlight throw could be much better. Apart from that, I can only nit-pick. Would have preferred black forks over the golden ones. Had to change my booking to the Black from the Red just because of how the Red clashes with the golden forks. Wish the Triumph logo was more discrete like on the Scrambler 400x. And the rear looks a bit more modern than neo-retro, does not gel with the rest of the design. I love riding it. Been daily-ing it for my office commute. Did one 300 km + trip during the Christmas holidays (with a tail bag). Absolutely having a blast. Regarding further models on this platform, a Speed 400 RR prototype with a quarter fairing and lower handlebars was already seen testing. A Bobber 400 is expected, follower by the most anticipated Tiger 400.

How did the 300 km trip go? Is it comfortable for long trips?
@the_winged_helm
@the_winged_helm 6 месяцев назад
@@nobodynobody3903 Yep, no issues with comfort. Although your hands might start to go numb if you're going above 100 - 110 kmph for long, because of the vibes past 5.5k rpm. And no wind protection means the wind blast would tire you out at the end of a long ride. The Triumph 400s are more of city slickers that can happily pull off the duty of occasional long rides on the highway. If you want these and intend on going on long rides often, then I would suggest to go for the Scrambler 400x for a more upright ergonomic that would offer a more comfortable ride (albeit, slightly less engaging compared to the Speed 400's ergonomic). And you might consider installing a big windscreen that would offer decent wind protection, but compromise on the looks. I ride mostly in the city with occasional sunday breakfast rides and rare lomg intercity rides. The Speed 400 absolutely fits right for me.

Would I assume correctly that for a 6'4 rider, the x scrambler is the one to go for?

I think the decals on the bike are awful. Such a shame for an otherwise decent package (quality aside) For an extra £700 you can get the Kawasaki z500

It's a great looking little budget bike. And I think this bike actually competes with the Ducati scrambler Icon, esp. at the eye watering prices Ducati is asking for them, a £5k difference. There'll be alot of people that will keep £5k (plus servicing costs) in their pockets and buy this over the Ducati as the Triumph is styled for the same sector. For the green lane'ing there wouldn't be much in it if the tyres were changed to those found on the scrambler, which they make for the Triumph too.

It's faster, feels lighter and a bit more agile. The Hunter is still very enjoyable though.

Although the MCN's review says exactly the opposite of the two machines:- "However, where the Scrambler 400 X outperforms the Speed 400 in terms of its appearance and stature, it does lose out dynamically - but this will only truly be noticeable back-to-back as it still handles to a reasonable level, especially in terms of mechanical feedback and grip."@@Englishbikerdan

Hello Mr. Dan I am a 23 year old who lives in india. I love to watch ur videos and i love the way u explain each detail about a motorcycle. I have been riding a 150 cc motorcycle for past 6 months and i still don't properly understand riding a motorcycle. Here in india we don't have any good motorcycle Training courses. The driving school instructors doesn't explain things well enough. example for shifting he said we should shift to the highest gear as soon as possible he didn't explain much about the correct timing for upshift and downshift. So Mr. Dan if possible can u please consider making a video using ur riding experience explaining the topic related to shifting gears like when to shift, what gear should i be using on specific situations like overtaking and in other scenarios ?

I have a friend who's owned a vintage Bonneville for decades. It's been a few years since he's ridden it because vintage bikes take some work to keep running and he's a busy guy. I'm working on convincing him that a 400 doesn't cost a lot and he should buy one so he can get out riding again. He and his misses aren't big people so I'm guessing that the 400 would be good enough for two up riding on our Canadian prairie city roads where strictly enforced 50 and 60 kph speed limits are the norm.

Guide review, I looked at the Hunter and this bike fir my daughter. Put a deposit on an inbound Triumph. Figured that they would outgrow the Triumph where the 20 hp hunter they would. I think the extra features are worth the extra money as well. Like both bikes though

Would love this as a second bike but hate the tank design, the ‘Jack’ is a bit over the top and tacky looking, to my mind. Having said that great review Dan and as others have said forward facing camera is much better than these distorted ones which are the current trend. Got a great feel for the bike in this review.

Reality check. A good effort from Triumph even though it's YEARS too late I said when the RF Interceptor came out "Told you to remake something like the Daytona 500 but it fell on deaf ears at Triumph and the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 has comfortably established itself as one of the UK’s favourite full-size motorcycles since it was launched in 2018 and has remained steadfastly popular in the face of newer opposition and I don't own one. Back to these two new bikes I have seen only one GPS check on the speed 400 result 88 MPH it needs a tooth on the front sprocket and also until I see a petrol station to petrol station check people need to stop saying it will do 80 or even 100 MPG. So yes a good if late effort but it doesn't ride over water or fly!
@Englishbikerdan
@Englishbikerdan 7 месяцев назад
If you like the Interceptor 650 so much, why didn't you buy one? Seem an odd argument to make if it's not a bike you'd buy. End of the day, these bikes are flying out of the dealers. So they are speaking to riders and they are at a price point which is within reach of the masses. They will do well, regardless of what we think. Cheers.
