what would be nice is the standards to stop saying "check" and actually do some work. testers attend site in dinner suite, defect an item then send a random quote. Example: for adjusting a screw in a fire door. attendance fee, 2 men minimum 4 hrs. $1000 bill for adjusting a door. Australian standards should review the word "maintenance" and what that means. Maintain its current condition. Imagine asking for a car service and all they do is just perform checks. Servicing under this standard should include some adjustments and maintenance for defects.
Interesting perspective. the word "check" is part of AS1851 like inspect, verify, operate, record, test, etc. You are correct that there may be people working in the fire industry (like any industry) that could do better. I would encourage you to look for a contractor you are happy with, there are many out there.
@@Firewize i think this is a great opportunity to fix what is wrong with AS1851 2012. yes previous versions need updating and make this space more safe for tenants, but in doing that it drives costs up. i think the FPAA should also incorporate the consumer into the panel so they can provide some feedback instead of only the contractors (business owners etc). yes the industry is a business and people work for money but the standards create a tool to hold a customer for ransom where they can dictate the terms. it shouldn't be up to the consumer to hope and prey to find a good service provider because even the good ones all stick to the standards and when reading the standards, it unfortunanlty just says check and test. some level of general maintenance should be added to the standards. will help achieve the intent (safe systems).
