Talk about a rare find while we are filming. We actually were trying to film Kona's good behavior, because she's amazing, but we got a gem instead. Note this is the biggest level of stress I will let these girls ever be in together, and we are practicing these skills in more and more intense situations so that they know what we want and we can keep them safe. This is by design as far as playing catch, being excited, running and zoomies with each other. And yes they each know their name and have their own Antonia voice.
Joey the blonde lab is a resource aggressor. She's 5 and 1/2, almost 6 years old, and we know this is something we manage for the rest of her life. She does not have good motivation, she has the best motivation for me but even that is pretty low, and she growls and likes to have a zone. We've worked over the last 16 months on her and my other control aggressive female that actually catches the ball.
Nyx is just beautiful. This was a high stress moment, and it could have EASILY caused a fight. Nyx catches the ball, everyone's in high excitement (look at tails and lips), and Joey starts to move towards Nyx. Nyx stops moving completely. That's a big big big dog signal. Joey looks at her and I start queuing them both.
I queue Ny that she is doing the right thing and she should pick the ball back up and bring it to me. You can't see my right hand, but she is now pretty responsive to visual and hand signals. Joey backs off once Nyx starts to come to me, and even though it was very stressful, I am so proud. Joey literally never backed down from a challenge or fight for what she thought was hers when I met her. I have permanent scars on my hand from an incident, and her growth here is insane. I was sweating in this moment.
We ended on a good note and went to crate naps. What a day! We owe so much to K9 Workingmind. They're safe, and asleep as I write this.
