A review of the Mazda MX-5 NC2. This is my 2011, 2.0 litre petrol MX5. In this video I discuss the exterior, interior and driving experience of the MX5. I have the convertible MX5 model with a hard-top called the prht which do prefer in this model.
The exact one is stock and doesn’t have the sports suspension or any optional extras other than what’s with the kendo edition.
Oddly it has the 5 speed box but still had the lsd thankfully. I actually prefer the 5 speed as I can hit 60 without a 2nd gear change.
There will be a whole host of mx5 miata videos coming over the next few months and years as this turns from stock to a nice GT/ trackday car. Trying to find that balance of usability and track worthiness will be key.
I after suggestions for coilovers and brake setups and if there’s anything this particular model suffers with, although so far I’m loving it.
My RU-vid channel is called Initial B. I review, fix, improve and race cars at track days. I have lots of plans to improve and modify this Mazda MX5 to get it track ready. The MX5 really is a fun car and I would recommend it to anyone that loves Japanese rear wheel drive cars.
Please see the rest of my channel for fast Japanese cars and Subaru Legacy build content.

The reason it won’t rev out is the manifold, they are incredibly restrictive. Also Cams will allow you to access that last upper band. Coilovers wise I would recommend meister R we have done some extensive testing on this platform and they offer a great compromise for quality vs cost 😊

Cheers man, I have a piper manifold in the shed but can’t be fitted yet as M2 motorsport want my car for prototyping something nice first. I’d love a set of cams, the engine needs waking up! As for those coilovers, I dare say I’ll be in touch!

If you do your cams and exhaust and tune it frees up a nice chunk of power. However after driving with it for 2 years I finally got round to installing a 5.8kg fly wheel and 8puck ceramic competition clutch. Result is not a on/off experience yes you can stall it easy if your not paying attention but it’s perfectly slip able in first. However when you want to have fun compared to stock it’s just miles better. Paired with racerom features activated flat up shifts and auto blip down shifts makes track days so much fun. Especially when your hassling a gt86 tho just can’t seem to lose you. However I’m not sure it’s because I’m running better brakes and Avonzzr boots but still smiles all round

I’ll be happy when I’m hassling m3s tbh lol but yes cams and header definitely!

Heater seats - on and off - no, the five stages are awesome! And I enjoy your review, but my NC2 with a Cobra race exhaust sonuds so much nicer - all MX5's need the stock exhaust replaced

Great video mate! Yeah a manifold and remap is a great power mod. Gain around 20bhp. Coilovers I’m running the MeisterR zeta crds. They are perfect for road and track use 😁
@InitialB
@InitialB 6 месяцев назад
Cool, good to know. Another 20bhp would be welcome. The 5 speed has a really long 1st and 2nd gear so plenty of midrange is used. And yeah MeisterR are what everyone keeps telling me. So will be treating myself this year !

It defo needs more power.

Don't believe the negative hype - the NC won Car & Driver Top 10 Cars 8X. That's more than any other generation of MX-5.

Great video! Yeah a 4-1 IL Motorsport Manifold with a map makes the car so much for responsive and more power. Meister R Sportives with some RX8 Yellow Dot anti roll bars and the car feels fantastic for what I use it for. Road and the odd track time.

@@_mattx5_500 yours absolutely right. Since this video I’ve done yellow dot ARBs and some meister r CRDs. Car feels so light on its feet now. Waiting on manifold now

I got an NC3 a few years ago. Just under 20kmiles on it. Ive installed MiesterR clubrace on it and have damping set at midpoint on road. I didnt like the standard gearknob either so I put a nice ILmotorsport satin stainless ball gearknob on that looks like a Type R which I recommend. Also have BBR Super200 kit plus the stainless centre section and their GT back box. If im honest, I think if I were to do it again I'd have gotten just as much pleasure from the Super185 without the cams from the 200 - still has the new exhaust manifold which is the main restriction plus includes the full stainless system. Its the noise from exhaust that really changes it and the extra torque from mid range. If i look at torque curves, they are all so linear with incremental gains that the subjective feel is not too different between the various NA tunes on the market Id guess. Mine redlines just under 8krpm now. Peak power at 7,6 or 7,7 but its making 200hp (according to the BBR optimistic dyno) at 7k already so there isnt much need to chase that ~8k redline). I think the 200 is more for chasing tenths of a second in autocross or hillclimb and the 185 gives you just as much character change but slightly less performance

@InitialB 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for that info man! How are the clubrace on the road? I only do three a year on track so going for a midpoint. But if the clubrace are much better I’ll happily go for those!
@becauseiwasinverted7971
@becauseiwasinverted7971 6 месяцев назад
@@InitialB I've not tried the ZetaCRD so cant say how they compare. The clubrace don't feel too stiff for me though. Perhaps I'm not getting most from the tyres though with them. And that's me running me running them midpoint as I say. Could back them off on damping. Spring rates are still fixed higher though
@InitialB
@InitialB 6 месяцев назад
@@becauseiwasinverted7971 it’s the solid top mounts too that might sway my idea to go for the zeta crds . Hard choice because on my mk1 I went to track with my nice new shiney willwods and instantly found my Gaz golds were no way near hard enough.

Recently got an nc2 sport tech (6-speed) . I am running a number of mods and highly recommend some meister coilovers. Also to fix your issue with sound, highly recommend a nice exhaust (I have a cobra racing) along with a upgraded manifold and a tune (also recommend a cold air intake with that). Makes that sound amazing and makes the car perform so much better.

Exhaust is coming next week hopefully. And then saving up for some coilovers soon I hope. All the comments suggest meister so will probably go for that!

@@InitialB basically I didn’t like intake sound being pumped in to the cabin so I deleted it. I also had to find a way to mount the fuel purge solenoid in an isolated way so its ticking didn’t transfer through the body of the car. Benefits: tidy up the engine bay stops unwanted intake noise in cabin. Makes working on the cars left side less fiddly and makes top mount access easyer and less congested when firing one piece cobalt strut brace.
