2025 BYD Shark vs Ford Ranger PHEV: This WON'T end well...

I'm worried for the Ford Ranger PHEV...
It's coming in 2025 with 45km of WLTP range, 3.5 tonne towing and 'full' offroad capabilities. But considering the BYD Shark - a plug-in hybrid ute - is going to be here earlier, likely cost FAR less money and have double the range, it's not a stretch to say the Ford Ranger PHEV is going to have some VERY tough competition.
And of course, the offroad Ute (or truck / bakkie) space is VERY competitive, with offerings from the diesel Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max, Ssangyong Musso, Mazda BT-50, Volkswagen Amarok, Kia Tasman and so many more.
So here's everything you need to know about the 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV and how it stacks up against the BYD Shark from a real car expert.

Seems like towing capacity is the ONLY thing that the blind, jealous haters cling on to it. If they want bigger towing capacity, get a full-size truck. BYD Shark is perfect for majority of population for light-medium towing and camping.

The low payload is also a big let down. It should be against the law for any ute to have less than a 1t payload. They should have made it have 1.5t payload and 3.5t towing to wipe the floor with the competition. Most utes that tow are over gvm or/& GCM

What kind of long term problems is it going to have? Ford has been building things a long time and it shows over time. For $5,000 it's a no brainer. A proven product all the way. If it was $10,000 less maybe. I don't know very many Chinese products that last well.

I think the average $30k saving is a big win for byd and most of us that just take their Ute camping or up the beach then byd is more than capable if your worried about diff locks and lift kits then your probs not looking at either of these vehicles I for one am hanging on for the shark I currently drive a v6 amarok 2021

So glad i came across this post . I too have 2019 V6 Amarok ..Simply the best at everything , except for reversing with a big load . Im not a fan of the 2024 Rangeroks and have been hanging on to my truck until a find a suitable ( cost effective ) replacement . I current use a slide on camper on my V6 and pretty much max out the GVM . I still tow the occasional 2-3 tonne trailer , so Going to BYD or similar , will be a compromise , as far as being able to tow .. Good news is I will be scalling down my towing anyway ( due to my age and physical capabilties ) My V6 can manage 7.5 litres per 100km in idea conditions and no more than 15 litres per 100km maxed out GCM . The fuel efficiency of a hybrid ute is very appealing .. Looking forwards to the future in EV's and Hybrids 👍🏻

To be COMPLETELY fair. Maybe you should leave the city and drive toward Gladstone and see the 10000’s of caravans on the road. And then walk through any of your local caravan parks. It’s like ranger city. I tow with my model Y. But are you expecting me to have my 1.6t boat on it every day? I don’t have a ranger/ nor want a ford. I think the BYD’s 4WD capabilities are a bit of an unknown - the ability for software to modulate power in a dual motor AWD system can be very very effective, so if they get that right then it might be as good as or better than the Ranger. The Shark’s ability to DC fast charge also gives it quite an edge as well. Personally I prefer the interior/exterior of the Ranger, but the Shark’s price/specs are very compelling.

Remember in Mexico a base Hilux starts at $20K equivalent while crew cab with diesel start at $30K or so BYD is twice as much Yet its towing and payload a lot less, no solid axle means it is never gonna be as off-road capable. It uses e-CVT rather than traditional torque converter automatic. Its 30kwh or so battery is stored not in the interior like the Wrangler 4XE or TNGA-F product but outside underneath the cab. So repairing and replacing on that battery will take longer and cost more money. Some of the biggest problem of the BYD DMO platform. This is not the game changer that some people hyped up to be

On power, we spotted in a Brazilian video a 6kw max output across 3 10a points in the tray. You can already get 16a peak from the bidirectional charge point on some models, so there’s a strong possibility of more power from the Shark with a vtol adapter

To long to adapt... Ford loses money on EVs sold. EVs turned out to be hard to make cheaply enough and that is a dilemma for them. The ford is an adaptation of an existing design. Was that because it is more expensive to create a brand new design?

The ratings for V2L and the rear power socket are different. The Shark, V2L is 6kw's. I'm not sure about the power socket because it's different for 110v and 220v. V2L comes from the charging point and I don't think the Ranger has that.

Well, as the owner of both Toyota Corolla hybrid and BYD Han Dmi, I think I have enough experience with HEV/PHEV. You must compare the output of engine when talking about hybrid cars, because the car cannot stay at maximum output power for long

Apples for Apples comparisons are not easy I'd agree. But given my usage case and experience, 40kms EV only range works well here commuting in Melbourne, full disclosure I drive a Defender 110 P400e PHEV.... And looking at the difference in drivetrain design, the Ford being what I shamelessly describe as a 'proper' parallel hybrid with the electric motor on the input side of the transmission, complete with low range too... no EV motor trailing in series on the rear axle like some others.....and no low range either on the BYD... So I'd expect the Ford to be far superior off road where things get a bit tough. The BYD 2.5 tonne capacity falls a bit short too I'd suggest. looking forward to seeing more when you review them side by side 🙂

When you run out of batteries the shark goes back to 2WD and loses 2/3's of its power, the ranger stays in 4wd and has a low rang and loses 1/4 of its power.
