2025 Toyota Fortuner Hybrid: What You Need to Know
Get ready for a major shift in the 2025 Toyota Fortuner, as it might be on the brink of a game-changing upgrade. Known for its tough off-road capability, the Fortuner is now stepping into the future with fuel-saving technology that could boost efficiency like never before. But the big question remains: will this innovation make its way to Australia?
Just recently, Toyota South Africa launched a Fortuner equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This new version combines a 48-volt battery and an electric motor-generator with the familiar 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The result? An impressive boost in fuel efficiency by up to five percent - a big deal for such a large SUV. However, while this advanced model hits the streets of South Africa, its Australian debut remains unclear.
In Australia, we've already seen similar hybrid tech in Toyota’s HiLux ute, and it’s also set to power the upcoming 250-Series LandCruiser Prado. But when it comes to the Fortuner, Toyota Australia hasn’t confirmed any plans to introduce the hybrid version just yet. One reason for the hold-up? Australia sources its Fortuner and HiLux models from Thailand, and the production line there hasn’t adopted the mild-hybrid system for the Fortuner.
The Fortuner has been part of Australia's SUV lineup since 2015, with a facelift and tech upgrades arriving in 2020. Interestingly, the design of the Australian Fortuner differs slightly from its South African counterpart, especially in the front and rear styling. Despite these differences, the performance remains similar, with the Fortuner in South Africa sharing the same turbo-diesel engine as Australia’s HiLux V-Active - delivering 150 kilowatts of power and 500 newton-meters of torque. However, one notable difference is that both the Fortuner and HiLux in Australia are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the upcoming Prado will boast an eight-speed auto for even better efficiency.
Of course, adding mild-hybrid technology does come at a cost. In South Africa, the new Fortuner 48V carries an extra price tag of around 11,000 Rand, or roughly 900 Australian dollars. This increase is a bit steeper than the price bump seen with the HiLux V-Active hybrid in Australia.
While the Fortuner has a solid presence worldwide, it faces stiff competition in the Australian market, especially against rivals like the Ford Everest and Toyota’s own Prado. With uncertainty around when or if the mild-hybrid Fortuner will hit Australian shores, fans of the SUV are left wondering whether they’ll get to experience this more efficient, eco-friendly version anytime soon.
