Gday Peter I nearly didn't watch this one but I'm so glad I did what a great refresher. I googled the calculator and it kept suggesting the fx-82AU plus to me. I ended up searching for both the fx-83DE is for Germany the fx-82AU Is sold in Australia where I am. DE and AU in the naming convention. I thought hat was pretty neat and found an fx-82ES And thought it would be for Spanish speaking countries but it isn't looking that way at the moment. We had a similar setup to this antenna in Australia and people called it the butter box because the tuning capacitor was housed in a butter box or Tupperware to protect from the elements. I haven't really seen this setup since the 70s though. Cheers

Good video and an appreciated refresher for me. I found myself at one point deciding to suggest that you put the finished product on an analyzer to show the response over frequency, but then I should have realized you would already be doing that! This video has also re-enforced my awareness of the need to purchase some metric measuring instruments. Hi. Sorry if this is a tiny bit off topic but perhaps you can help solve this query that is stuck in my head :D Basically the question is weather or not it might be a good idea to use a Bal-Bal transformer at the feed-point on a doublet to match it to the balanced transmission line. The question came about after someone asked if they could use a 1:9 Un-Bal to match their coax to their 450 ohm transmission line. Many people were saying that it would be pointless trying this due to the unknown impedance of the entire system. So i proposed that he used a bluetooth antenna analyser to measure the impedance at the feed-point. Once the impedance of the active elements is known then i would have thought we could match the antenna to the feedline with a Bal-Bal transformer. Then since the system should now be sitting at 450ohm he could then use a 1:9 Un-Bal where he goes from 50 ohm coax to the 450 ohm balanced transmission line. I was just surprised that i have never come across this theory and wondered if there was a reason why it might not work. Perhaps it would affect the way that a doublet works and make it less effective as a multiband antenna? 73's

LOL! For 20 years I taught that LC "resonance equation" at University level, and I never knew it was called "Thomson's Formula"! But the "Fuchs Antenna Coupler" I DID know! (But PLEASE Peter, don't use R when you mean Z for the inductor impedance ratio!)

Nice example video Peter! Folks can avoid some of the manual math by getting the ARRL's "Single-Layer Coil Winding Calculator" (if you don't mind working in inches) to quickly determine the coil length, turns per inch vs. wire size you want to use etc. It's a slide rule style cardboard calculator (I'm sure there's an app for that nowadays!). I followed along using it and your calculations and came up with basically the same values. Still have to do the Z transformation though to figure the tap location. Thanks again Peter! 73 - Dino KL0S

There is an app for that. Well, a website with online calculators and downloadable PC software. Here's the link to their single-layer air-coil calculator. The PC software allows you to calculate the capacitance and Q of the coils as well. They have quite a few useful inductor calculators. coil32.net/online-calculators/one-layer-coil-calculator.html

This video is really highly instructive! Thank You, Peter. But if you not German-speaking viewers are about to search the internet for this type of antenna to get more (background-)information, use the term 'Fuchs-antenna', because 'Fox-antenna' will probably lead you on a false trace. Fox is the English word for (German) 'Fuchs', which happens to be the name of the inventor (Josef Fuchs) of this antenna. And the described matching unit is a Fuchs-Kreis, I'm not sure if it’s called 'Fox-circuit' in English, but it’s probably not.

Nice explanation Peter, very nice to show the auto transformer to, its much easyer to handle for the community of our fellow radio amateurs.. speaking of 2m, i would personally as a travel antenna just cut the breid from the center wire in the coax and fold it out to a dipole, but for HF its a little bit bulky ofcourse :-) again nice video... keep it up 73´s Anders

Great video with fine examples on how to do the calculations, Peter! One thing: I thought you mentioned the antenna wire should be longer than the calculated 'lambda /2'. In reality, the wave travels slower in a conductor than in air, so the wire will be shorter (by a factor of 0.9-0.95 times the wavelength) Of course, you need to start with a longer wire and cut it to resonance later, as you said. I have the great Rothammel Antennenbuch, which has about every imaginable antenna type Stein, LA9QV

I noticed in some of my old electronics books that permeability is multiplied where you normalize with the 1nh. Does this equation use relative permeability? where air is around 1 as I noticed most equations use approx. 1.26 X 10-6 . I hope my question finds you well.

Great video, I've been wondering how to work those equations with too many unknowns. Question: at 44:17 you have 55 mm squared on the denominator of the equation to find the inductance (L) for 8mm diameter coil, why 55 mm squared? I think that you wrote the exponent 2 by accident as you didn't squared the 55mm when you entered things in the calculator. Personally, I don't like putting units inside my equations but in their own equations to the right of my calculations.
@danluzurriaga6035
@danluzurriaga6035 5 лет назад
Right, and as you say he did not actually square the 55mm in the calculation so it turned out OK. For units, I just separately ensure that they all cancel/multiply to the correct unit we are looking for, in this case nH.
@TRXLab
@TRXLab 5 лет назад
Yes you are right David my mistake
@danluzurriaga6035
@danluzurriaga6035 5 лет назад
When you have an equation with "too many unknowns", that does not mean the equation is unsolvable. You simply estimate values for the variables that seem to optimize your current circuit in terms of size, space, capacitance value and so on and plug in for a potential result. The resulting value will be correct, as are other possible results if you choose different values. For example, if you wish the coil to be 20mm long, then plug it in and based on the resulting inductance value, you can determine where the number of turns is to create the autotransformer from the 50 ohm impedance output of the transceiver. That is done all the time in circuit design.

Wenn es auf 80m und 160m läuft, um so besser. If I have a end fed bronze long wire antenna with a length of 40 m, how do I know its impedance? It's all about reception in the 20 and 40 m band.
