I bought this set from GAMES magazine in the late 80's for $200. Of course this was way before the internet so there was no shopping around for a better deal. But I just had to have it. Anyway, looks like it hasn't changed a bit except mine has a bumpy green foam liner without cutouts. It's nearly 40 years old and I still love it. Thanks for posting this vid. It's nice to see they are still in business apparently. And costs have decreased? Wow!
Great review! I own a exact same chess set, and it's amazing! Big (about 54 cm.) and interesting design, which is definitely not boring to look at. Greetings from Denmark
Thanks for watching! I have to agree about the Knights, some irregularities notes during the finishing and refinement. For the price it's a decent set though, that some people will still enjoy playing on!
Considering you get such a high quality board with this set - it is a steal for about $60-70. Feels like a high end set, not something you find on Amazon mixed in with the overpriced cheap sets. Thanks for the great review!
I think the wood is the key to this nice chess set. The wood feels very nice. It takes coloration well. The wood feels tough; I think it's going to stand up very well to normal chess handling. The wood is light; that's why the pieces have to be so big, and still they feel light though well-balanced. The wood doesn't take detail well, not nearly as well as boxwood; that's why the knights are relatively crude though well crafted. The wood stood up well to rough treatment in manufacturing the sets; that's why the piece designs are a bit radical, and there is a lot of decorative burning. The outcome shows that this unusual wood can be excellent for chess sets if you make the right compromises.
Thanks for the memories. I had a set like this I bought at the christkindlmarkt in Nuremberg Germany. The way the market is open air and the way things are displayed led me to believe, at the time, the man running the stall crafted it himself. Since then, I’ve seen that set is pretty ubiquitous throughout Europe and not all the uncommon in the states either. Now if I could just get some gluhwein and that mushroom soup…
It's a nice chess set but: 1) I would prefer the bishops having opposing caps like the king and the queen 2) I think the burn marks should be opposite colors as well 3) The knights are a bit ordinary looking 4) I'd rather not have those long rectangles of opposing colors near the coordinates
I have the same one except mine is black instead of brown. In my opinion I think that the black one is the best looking opinion for this series. It's not the best chess set but is fine for a casual game. I wouldn't use them in a tournament or blitz game. I consider these more of a novelty set than a serious set for official tournament or blitz setting. A great set to give as a gift for a casual chess player who plays periodically here and there. There is a Czech Club set that I would like to get. It's different than all the Staunton designs and is still acceptable under FIDE for tournament use.
I personally hate the knights look in this chess set. That's the only thing that is making me hold back haha. I might get it for just the board and get new pieces though
