Man you went after it hard. You've gotta remember that you don't have 500 acres of thick woods, foods plots, and fancy plastic heated blinds to hide out in. Everything you got, you got from your hard work and ingenuity. Some times you're the hammer and sometimes you're the nail. Next time you'll be the hammer.
Big old Kansas stud. Great job staying with him. I’ve yet to finish my quest for the big one on our ks land. Ten main real nice buck. Keeps tricking me. He knows when I’m ln his living room LOL.
My man-these are the videos that I enjoy. Now I couldn’t imagine how much that trip cost total. We went last year unit 11 from the 1-6 and it was hot and horrible left day after that front. Came cameras gave us intel that all the movement was 2 am-4am. Would go later like the 7-15th but that doesn’t go well with opening rifle in se mo rifle opener. That’s when the kids are put out with the wife till the freezer is full 😂. Thanks for the video
I hate that you didn't find him, As a deer hunter if you hunt long enough these mistakes will happen. Your video was great men. You kept it 💯 % real that's what we can learn from. The Good thing about it you are making memories.
Thank you. I try to keep my videos as raw and transparent as possible. Hunting is full of ups and downs .. success and failures .. accomplishments and mistakes. Thank you for watching 👍🏼👍🏼.
I’m in the midst of fine tuning a heavy arrow set up with a cut on contact head, those quartering to shots are a lot easier when you can put the pin right on the shoulder. Like you said, life of a bow hunter, got to tip your hat to the big bucks they aren’t easy
Was pulling for you Russ. That is how my out of state hunt went last year as well. I was able to get a dog on it and didn’t have the rain and still nothing. Felt that the deer was going to be fine but always want to make sure to do all you can. Last 8 deer all heart shot and then botch a shot. You really get down on yourself and that’s good as it gets you to stay sharpe so it doesn’t happen again. Go get ‘em 👊
Really good video...sorry for the end result. That sucks and if you are like me it replays in your head for a really long time...the gift that keeps giving I guess...ugg. That many days is also really mentally tough...I love to archery hunt but sometimes long seasons are a challenge especially when you are away from home. Kudos for the effort and sharing! And damn those cows on public land...here in Oregon for elk hunting I dont have any public land that doesnt have cattle in the summer....it changes a lot of things.
Thanks. Yes it was a tuff stretch.. loved every minute of it though. And yes it holds a special place in my mind for sure. Feels to me as though I have unfinished business in Kansas 😂. I’ll be back there for sure !
Dang that was a monster 10 yards makes you think no problem. But them big bruisers can take a lick. I loved rage broadheads switched to a montec m3 blood trails not as good but quartering to shots they thump shoulders. Enter and follow through. No deflection I’ve yet to recover shoulder shot bucks m3 full metal jacket 560 gr 70lbs 29.5” draw. But awesome footage never fails big ones are when it all goes wrong.
just caught this video....man I feel for you. That knot in your stomach , I've had it on a 150's 10 yards hard quartering to , 1 lung from 20 feet up...never found him. That loss started my search for the biggest expandable I could find which led me to N.A P. broadheads ...FOC 3 inch 2 blade 170 grain. Since then I've taken over 40 deer from 3 yards out to 38 in 6 years. To say they will turn a bad shot into a recovery is an understatement . They market it for crossbows. I also bought an APA king cobra 80 lb...the net chrono reading on 464 grain setup is 324-326 fps. As much time and effort as we put into the hunt It don't hurt to have a 3 inch cut. I've only broken 2 blades on 2 heads ....1 was a pass through (95 percent are )..that hit a rock . The other blade broke on a spine shot that actually broke 1 of the lumbars, yeah the big thick part . I've reused that one , just put another blade on it. The 2 blades are super thick and you can resharpen them . They fly great and with your 70 lb bow the extra foc will def help those 300 spine arrows smash through bone. Ive shattered shoulder blades ( not the thin middle part ) and rib bones may as well be jelly. I've 1 lunged some since but the sheer cutting diameter and extra weight has made my tracking jobs much easier . Hate to see a big un get away whether it's me or anybody.
Thanks for the comment and Sub John.. I will check out those NAPs you mentioned. I’m sure hoping to redeem myself in Arkansas or Mississippi soon. Thanks again and good luck for the rest of your season ! Sounds like you’ve found a good arrow set up for sure 👍🏼
Another excellent show! When you got in the truck wearing that lapel mic at 11:45, is that paired to your Gopro? I recently learned about a shotgun mic for my song nx80 and am gonna go that route, even after buying mics and everything. I’ll save that stuff for film other people’s hunts. I feel good about the choice, then I see you wearing a lapel mic. I do have a nice shotgun mic and wind screen if needed for my GoPro.
If I remember correctly I had my phone in a quick mount and the lapel was wired into my iPhone.. most of my interviews in that video where filmed on my iPhone. I now run a video mic pro on my main camera and I have since purchased a dji mini set of wireless lapel mics that are great. The rode video mic pro is awesome. The lapel mic is great for filming in the truck due to the background noise of the vehicle and for distance away from the camera. Also great for just grabbing your phone for certain situations. It just gives you better audio than just the phone itself and also you can add the dead cat wind muff to the lapel for windy days … like everyday in Kansas 😂 Thank you for the kind words and for watching 👍🏼👍🏼.
Thank you. For that video I used a Sony ax53 as my main camera , a go pro hero9, an insta 360 camera and an iPhone 13 Pro This year I’ve added a Sony ax700 as my main camera. There will be an Iowa video coming out soon with the ax700, go pro 9 and insta 360
I like it. I Havnt had any issues with it. 1 battery last all season. I havnt had any weather related issues. Tap button one time to range.. pin pops up and you shoot. Or double tap and your row of preset pins comes up.
Thanks Brad. I think when I go back I will definitely try a different unit or area. I know it sounds crazy being that it was Kansas but it was some of the hardest public hunting I’ve done. As far as trying to get on deer. They just were very few and far between.
The current drought in much of Kansas has definitely affected the deer herd for the past 2-3 exceptionally dry years. The fit survive, but many deer are extremely stressed and aren’t looking as healthy.
It was a combination of low light , a lighted sight pin being to bright , a bad angle and me not aiming a tad higher to compensate for a 10 yard shot at a hard angle. I’ve made that shot several times over the years. Also the camera angle and shooting angle are not the same. But yes you are right about the shoulder shot position . Unfortunately It was just a combination of many struggles that led too a poor shot from myself.
Should have never taken that shot. It was a terrible angle and everyone watching knew that. Better to let him walk than wound the animal. Tomorrow's another day. Sorry, just the truth.
