Thank you very much Marie, from France (Auvergne), for your very interesting videos and your sweetness in teaching us pottery. I really liked your video on clay recycling that I will put into practice. I have a suggestion for a future video: how do you clean the workshop, and not to clog the pipes with clay? Cleaning is an important part of the job and can be complicated when you don't have running water nearby... Thank you again for all your great vidéos !

Thanks for the idea. You can swirl the white and colored clay together and make a pattern. You can also add colored clay to your pottery and decorate it in different ways. Beginner here. I'm taking a class and last week alone I tried to make slip out of wet clay, glazed my green ware and trimmed a hole in my pot. Lol I learned so much in one day! I am determined to become good and if I ever make money I will donate because your are so so helpful to me. Thank you. I plan to make new slip this week and use vinegar. Do I have to put much? Should I add it before stain for getting correct consistency? Thanks again!!
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters Год назад
Hi Emily. Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting pottery. That's cute. I did the same thing the first time I made slip, LOL. You don't need much vinegar. Just a teaspoon for every cup of water. Just add the vinegar to your water. I would store your slip in a freezer bag. It lasts forever. You are going to be a great Potter. I think you will like this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7TcbmARt-TI.html 😊

Can I use porcelain slip for stoneware body? Try to use for wide brush painting with it or dipping such as ‘Bunchung’. What is main differences with making slip with raw materials? I really appreciated your video. You are a great teacher!!
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters Год назад
Thank you, Chung. I would not recommend it because the 2 different clay bodies may not get along in the kiln. If they don't expand and contract together and have the same shrinkage rate, the clay will crack. You can, however, test firing. Try firing a small amount of the clays together in the kiln. If it works, then the shrinkage rate is the same. 😊

Thanks a lot, as always: clear, right to the point with optimal speed, intonation, simply perfect. And now is the question regarding using slip as a glue. I have seen 100 times my classmate using slip to attach two parts of clay together ( let's say handle to the mug) , still can't understand - what is wrong with the usual process: score, add water method ( the one I always use?). Is slip better or equal alternative?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 2 года назад
Thank you. 😊 Good question. Many potters especially beginners use slip to attach the clay to ensure that it sticks together. But you can use just water if you have no issues with cracking. I did it a few times and once the handle separated from my mug. Now I don't take chances and always use slip to make sure my pieces stick together. 👍

Does the shrinkage rate change within the same clay body depending on the batch? For example, I bought a clay body from Laguna clay and it has a shrinkate rate of 10% +/- 2%. After using the clay, I discovered it has a shrinkage rate of 12%. If I buy a new bag of this same clay body from Laguna, will it always have a 12% shrinkage rate or could the next bag have a 8% shrinkage rate? Thank you so much for all your lovely videos.
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 6 месяцев назад
Thank you. That is a very good question. No, the shrinkage will stay the same unless you fire at a different temperature or they change the formula. 😊

I want to coat the inside of my terra cotta bowls with mason colored slip. Can I use a lighter colored clay to color? How do you make terra cotta colored slip, since the clay is brick red. Thank you!
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters Год назад
Hi, Tom, That is a very good question. No, you would not be able to the red brick clay. While it is always best to use the same clay for slip, you can still use different clay bodies. Just make sure the white clay is the same firing temperature. I would strongly suggest making a sample test tile and bisque fire the 2 clay bodies. If there are no cracks, then the two clay bodies are compatible.

Hi, great video, thank you! I work with slips and manipulate the clay afterwards but I’m finding the slip has starting to crack during the drying process when I add 10% turquoise stain. My recipe is is 50% ball clay 50% China clay, the white and black slips do not crack. Would there be something I could add to make the slip more plastic please?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 2 года назад
Thank you, Jane. You can try some Epsom Salt. Here is a link for you to check it out geni.us/Z1Yj It can increase plasticity and increases the attraction of the platelets in the slip, causing the clay to become flocculated. Desolve in water first. Be careful to add only a small amount at a time. 😊

Yes, you are right the humid it is the longer it will take. Plus casting slip is formulated to dry slower. It also depends on the size of the mold. We live in the desert and friend has to wait until the next day sometimes.
