Produced by Restaino, Defrancesco, & Ryan Cheevers
SO, HOW’D YOU GET HERE?
The work of actors, publishers, SFX artists speak for themselves in the world of arts and entertainment. But has anyone actually asked these professionals, “So, How’d You Get Here?” The stories may be funny, over-the-top, and sometimes heartfelt; but the journey wasn’t always easy. The show is hosted by Tony Defrancesco and Angelo Restaino, and features experts in the arts and entertainment industry. Nestled in one of LA’s most prolific podcast spaces, Tony and Angelo spend an hour building conversations around this one simple question, “So, How’d You Get Here?”

Robin apologized to Dana for taking some jokes. Dana said you didn't take anything from me, I've been trying to be you for four years. 😅

Dana and Robin were both Bay Area kids. In the late 70s, there used to be an annual free comedy day in GGP. I saw a very young Whoopi Goldberg do standup there. Kevin Pollack used to have a routine where he dressed like Columbo before he moved into acting. But it was shortly after Robin's Popeye movie came out, Dana ended up on stage with him and they did dueling Popeyes. Holy cow, it was hilarious.

Oh yes. Comedy Day at Golden Gate Park. I remember those days. First time I saw Robin Williams do his bit. Also, Dana Carvey's father was my High School typing teacher at San Mateo High School.

The SF Bay Area was LOADED with comedy back then. Sinbad, Paula Poundstone, Ellen DeGeneres, Kevin Pollack, Will Durst, Margaret Cho, Bobby Slayton, Robin and Dana, of course, so many others I'm forgetting. All became big names.

Kind of a side note. But I did not realize that Don Rickles was so great. Until I started watching RU-vid videos of him. He's definitely should be at the top of the list.

Love Dana! Watch him all the time trying not to be him but to learn from him. Sat next to him in an audience once in the 80.s Was too nervous to speak to him. I also did improv with Robin for 2 seconds at the Comic Strip in NYC which was basically Robin doing all the improv and me standing with my thumb up my a**!

We went to a Comedy Club in California when I lived in Thousand Oaks. I was walking back to the Rest Room and noticed a photo of Robin Williams in the wings near the stage with a big sign above it. The sign said something like Don't perform your act if you see this man in the audience. I had no idea what this was about and thought it was a joke. I asked one of the Managers and he said Robin was known to go into Comedy Clubs and sit in the back after the lights went down and record jokes from the Comedians. I didn't think it was true but years later is was confirmed.

I've heard it mentioned on a few podcasts from the older comedians that Robin "borrowed" material but nothing specific in regards what jokes were stolen but it's probably true. I wonder how much easier it was to do in the 70's? as VCR's were rare and everyone was coked up.

I like podcasts because they cut the studios out entirely, and show that all you really need is the talent and a modicum of equipment. If we could build that back up, we could completely revamp show biz with none of these idiots at the top of it pulling the strings and blowing the money.

I am not a expert but it seems to me improve isn't a act, it's a personality on stage that makes people laugh . Kat Williams, Ian Bagg id bet have that same kinda personality in real life that makes there friends laugh and then it really comes out on stage. Kat typically has a scripted show and Ian just uses the crowd, but both are fn hilarious personality s.

Everyone starts somewhere. I think most people give up too early. A few people should give up sooner and redirect their ambitions. Sometimes things that are just notions are mistaken for ambitions. My ambition was to have my own business. I waited until I was about 41 because I though I need to learn more. The answer to that is that we always need to learn more but you'll work harder and learn faster when the payroll is due and the equipment lease is due and the jobs or projects are due. Jump into the guts of the economic system and produce something that people are willing to pay you for.
