I really like the 600. It’s such a classy looking car. I remember when they were released to the public, taking on the e36 bmws etc. It’s a much better looking car than the Mondeo. I wish saloon cars were still as popular.
Thanks Matt! Yes, when they were launched, Rover was still owned by British Aerospace, and so it was pitched as a direct rival to the 3-Series, but it really competed better with the upper ranges of the Mondeo, Primera and Cavalier, to name but three. As you can see, the shape of the car is nowhere near as practical as a modern crossover, but it is a very, very charming car indeed.
This is a very good informative video. Much better than what I could do but heres some friendly advice. I wouldn't gave the sun next time. Its hard to see because of it.
Yes, it didn't go very well because of the sun! I only had a limited time to make the video that day, hence why the sun was at some pretty awkward angles... Most of the videos I make are not as bad as this, fortunately! Glad you enjoyed it, I don't think anyone else has made a comparison like this yet...
Interesting video. Really enjoyed it. Look forward to the next one. Hate to see old cars go to waste, even if they are a bit tatty. Would have replied to the social vid, but due to an incedent am currently without a car.
Thanks Matt! Gosh, I hope that you are OK. We have too many cars where we live at the moment, so perhaps that I should lend you one of mine! Yes, I won't be keeping this car very long, but it's been fun using her for a couple of days so far. The engine and gearbox aren't too bad, especially with the work which has been done on the car today.
Curious to know if the term "crossover" has taken hold in the UK for vehicles that are clearly not sedans (saloons) but are also not truly SUVs (defined as body-on-frame and, at least originally, truck-based). "Crossover" here is actually embraced by the industry and you'll hear/see them use the term in interviews and, for all I know, in adverts. "Crossovers," are unit body construction and could be said to be station wagons (estates) that have ballooned to take the stance and general proportions of an SUV...but aren't.
Thanks David! Yes, the MG ZS is definitely a crossover. The definition over here is the same as you explain it in America. SUV is a more general term which encompasses both crossovers and other 4x4s, and therefore the MG ZS is also an SUV, but more specifically, a crossover. Hope that helps! Lots more videos to come this week...
Does the 600 lack steering wheel radio controls? Thats a surprise, as the N reg 216Si I had was equipped with them. Im afraid Id take the Rover over the MG
The 600 does not have steering wheel controls, you are correct! I think my 1996 Rover 416 SLI also had them. Could part of the reason why you prefer the 600 be the fact that you currently own three Rovers already, sir?
@@furiousdriving, yes, the image that they project is a bit different, but the MG ZS is a really practical car, which is easy to drive and live with. The Rover isn't quite so easy to live with, but it is a gentleman's express, and I know you are looking forward to driving it very much....
you did well for the money, on autotrader are a couple of minter 600s all sub £500. you are taking a risk sub £500, but i have seen many real great cars with little milage between £500-£1000. why spend 20k when there are loads of depreciated bargains about, it would be rude not too. i am of the opinion that if its relaiable and functional, and has a full service history, the car is worth a look. perhaps being a bigger person, an omega or somthing like that would suit you better. but those rovers are an unknown quanity to me i have had the 214 and its wasnt very reliable. also after a long car journey no matter how "gadgeted up" it might be ; your glad to get out of it and have a breather.......i would rather run a 1k car myself....good video.....
Thanks Nicholas! Yes, the car has been bought for an event, I don't source cars like this for clients or recommend that they spend this sort amount on them, unless it is a stopgap, or they really, really know what they are doing. We will be selling the Rover after the event, and the first video specially about it will be up tomorrow. It has various things wrong with it, although the engine and gearbox are in pretty reasonable condition and I have just had the cam cover gasket changed followed by oil and filters service, and the transmission fluid has been topped up. It's got lots of space for me, and I normally drive smaller cars than this, actually. The car that replaces our MG3, whenever that happens, will be along the lines of what you mention, though, and around that budget. Oh, and I have had a Rover 214 myself, along with four other Rovers! Thanks for watching.
@@lloydvehicleconsulting many thanks, hope the rover goes well for you. i love cheap cars, and have saved thousands over the years. many cars considered end of life machines, go for years if you know what to look for, and when i was a student through nessesity i picked up this skill, its a good skill to have in knowing whats a lemon, and whats a minter.
@@nicholasowens2351 , yes, I have to check cars for clients on a regular basis, so I do try to exercise caution, and encourage others to do the same. I do need various modern features, good economy and impeccable reliability for a main car in order to travel around the country and to take clients in, hence why my main one is just two years old, but for a car to have a bit of fun and just to run around locally, then a cheap one can be really good, as long as you know what you are doing... I do have The Rubbish Mechanic to advise me, which is a true blessing, and he has already been hard at work on the Rover!
It's not bad, although the visibility isn't great for parking and the fuel economy isn't brilliant. Mind you, I didn't buy it for either of those reasons. It also isn't really in great cosmetic condition (it's much worse than it looks in the video), although the engine and gearbox are now pretty good following, a new cam cover gasket, a transmission fluid top up and an oil and filters service I had done yesterday. The MG is much, much easier to live with, and my week with it has been really good. We can't say how many will be around in 2040, but it doesn't seem badly made to me.
