2124 is a data sonification work for percussive rudiment and glacier ice. Projection data that maps the future recession of the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet glacier in southeast Iceland informs an ever increasing metronome. Using this metronome as a guide, the performer plays a continuously repeating rhythmic sequence (or rudiment) using a left hand (L) and right hand (R) sticking pattern (LL-R-LL-RRRR; 2-1-2-4). Over the course of the piece, the performer plays one hundred iterations of the rudiment, as each iteration represents one year of time. In this way, listeners can hear the projected change-rate of Breiðamerkurjökull over the next century from 2024 until 2124.
Additionally, the audio quality changes throughout the composition. A series a microphones positioned between the ice fragment and glacier surface, as well as field recordings of meltwater streams and ice cave acoustics, create a kind of narrative for listeners. They begin at the surface of the glacier, move slowly into the ice, until finally arriving beneath the ice and surrounded by meltwater streams. During the final rudimental sequences, they are are then pulled quickly back to the surface. This audio narrative is meant to show how the glacier is not simply disappearing, but undergoing state change from solid ice to liquid water.
