Hi Alec You didn't show us how many people it takes to lift those 24" logs up onto the splitter? Maybe a removeable ramp on one side would help us old guys? Work smart not hard,(or better yet not at all!) take care stay warm Owen m

That is a pretty neat set up but the amount of time that ram takes to make 1 full cycle is painfully slow. I have 40 ton splitter with a 14 horsepower motor. It's definitely not a 40 horse tractor but that really shouldn't be of much concern anyway beyond a certain point. The real limiting factor on anything hydraulic is how big the cylinder is and the speed in which you can move fluid and the amount of fluid being moved. The cycle speed on my splitter is probably twice as fast as your tractor mount and still splits 24 inch oak logs in 4s with hardly any hesitation. Granted it was quite a pricey machine, it has saved me 3 years of buying heating oil which is over 4 dollars a gallon in my area. At 550 gallons per winter the thing has paid for itself over again. You should check out some of the newer splitters out there. These little Honda engines require very little maintenance on non ethanol fuel and speed up the splitting process incredibly. The days of the old crappy 8 horsepower 20 ton junk are gone.
