Put a blanket or 2 around the heater. Insulate it more. Also I use a timer on my hot water tank. It comes on in the morning @04:30 to 05:30. 1 hr is all it runs everyday. I have hot water all day and night when needed. My tank is bigger than yours, but I am sure you can figure out how long to run yours for the hot water you need. Maybe have it come on in the morning for an hr, and then back on at night for an hr. I paid $47 for my timer and I love it!!!

Hello buddy my hot water heater tank is DC and Is my dump load from my solar and wind turbines check out my build vids. So it only heats when my home is fully charged and then it will dump into the heater. DC heater not AC. If i wrap my tank it will hold the heat in alot better. Thanks for your comments, Hope all is well.

I know I'm late to the party, but if you plumb the electric water heater in series before the gas water heater, you'll get the best of both, since the propane heater won't have to run as much.

dude ! reduce your water pressure on your domestic hot water system , perhaps install a 3 rd pex line and create a recirc line insulate the tank and lines bundle all 3 in a insulated covering and do move the house closer to the tank.

Consider adding a small 19-40gal propane water heater tank after your solar heater. You could have consistently hot 120+ deg water for not much money over time. Try the insulation first, but this is the permanent way to go.
@ronb6182
@ronb6182 11 месяцев назад
I got rid of my tank and started using an RV instantaneous water heater instead the water is very hot you must add cold water. And you must take less than 20 minute showers because the unit cuts out the gas until it cools down. I thought about putting the hot water side into a 40 gallon tank and storing the heated water. Then you could add cold water at the shower. I know some will ask why not just buy a propane water tank. They are more expensive and to save gas I would want it off. The instantaneous water heater would only come on in demand that's the key. 73

I used a kit that had reflectex Its like mylar bubble wrap. get some and wrap it around three laters. Put a door on your shed and get a low flow 1.5 gpm shower head (Niagara N2915CH 1.5 GPM Chrome Shower Head) ebay 8 bucks. Put a door on the shed too. What works marginally in summer will almost not work at all in winter.

hi ya id thought id add my own bit of advise for ya but im just wondering if you have any rockwool slab lying around you could build a temporary box around it using u shaped wire pins to hold it together but also, im just wondering if system refills after use this maybe why yr losing so much heat in the night but it is open to the elements so to many variables...plus lowering yr cut off point by 0.2v could help, you are running lead after all..
@ModernOffGridDIY
@ModernOffGridDIY 8 лет назад
lots of variables for sure, I will wrap the tank really good and that should help hold most of the heat in, Once I move this heater to my new off grid home it will be in a room and wrapped it should have no problem keeping it hot. Thats why i like testing things it really helps to work out any bugs. Thanks for your comment and support
@evmocean
@evmocean 8 лет назад
you also have to consider the refill aspect as well 7 gallons of hot comes out so 7 gallons of cold go in, and nothing to heat it you could try not having a shower at night see what temp it is before ya go to sleep and when ya wake up, a scummy test i know but its still a test

hehehe, Basically, your hot water tank is outside in the cold. Move it inside or put it in a well insulated box. and you lose lots of heat through the pipes. Just move it inside and solve lots of problems

The one above does have a water saver plug in it and it does an ok job it is plastic but hey it has been working. Add more insulation! A blanket of glassfibre or whatever, wrapped around the tank should help a lot. Also be sure to insulate the last foot or so of pipe which brings cold water to the tank - you might find it feels warm to the touch, if so the tank is also losing heat from there.

How about using a thermostat to keep the water hot overnight with battery power? Keeping the water hot is not as hard as getting it hot, so it shouldn't consume a lot of your battery power. And, you are obviously producing an excess of solar power - or, you wouldn't be shunting it into an electric hot water heater element, right? Between the jacket and a little battery power, it should be quite doable. Good luck!
@willwillis2381
@willwillis2381 2 года назад
That's not a good idea. Over the 10 to 14 hrs of dark you'll drain your batterys.
@richardowens9061
@richardowens9061 2 года назад
@@willwillis2381 That depends on the size of the battery bank. I have a 23,040 watt-hour LiFePO4 battery bank. I could easily keep that hot water tank going overnight and not even notice the difference.

Power is power and energy is energy. You can dump the load to AC or DC if the Appliance uses AC then dump the power and a see if the appliance uses DC then dump the load in DC power

Ok, so I saw the video and here are the conclusions that I have come to. There will always be temperature loss through the tank. A lot of people will tell you that you don't need a blanket. That is BS. You are the one who paid for all of this now put more insulation to cut back on heat loss. Another thing: Use a larger water heater. That means you will make more hot water. If you have a connection to the grid you can use a DPDT ( Double Pole Double Throw ) relay with a 12 hour timer. Not so easy to hook up. The AC power can go through a thermostat but not necessarily the one that came with the water heater . 4500 watt element not needed to make up for heat loss a night. The AC power makes up for the heat loss using a smaller wattage water heating element. I have been making mathematical calculations on this stuff for several years now and I know that it all works because the math works out. It is just a matter of getting all of the parts connecting them up and working out any bugs that turn up like loose connections, too small wire, shade on the panels, too many cloudy. Al
@tyronesmith5112
@tyronesmith5112 3 года назад
So have you considered that you might also be loosing heat from the tank because as you use hot water at night you're adding unheated water to the tank, which can't be heated 2nd to the loss of aux power? I'm not sure how or even if this issue can be fixed. However, considering the 10 degree drop you mentioned, I'm not sure it's even be worth it.
@CoolMusicToMyEars

Encase this cylinder in a big box and insulate with vermiculate granuals, thats what I aim to do, and use two tanks, heat two on a changeover valve - electrical side, so you have double store heat available, try and think of distribution of heating in say 3 places up the tank, not just one place ! dump load power is always best to heat water, and insulate all out / in pipes...
@gregyohngy
@gregyohngy 6 лет назад
What is the temperature of your incoming cold water? If you stored it in a tank, then it would be at room temperature and not its original temperature. I used about 100 ft of pex tubing/2.5 gal in a concrete roof heated by the sun or you could use in your attic to preheat the water.
@billjones5178
@billjones5178 5 лет назад
To save your energy 1. move tank inside and heat loss will help heat your house saving heat energy. 2. Use hot water at evening or night B4 it cools down, leaving tank water cooler and heat loss will be less as cool water losses less heat. Yeah, us water saver shower head.

The heat loss you are getting is not unusual considering the water heater is sitting right by an open doorway. If the tank had a insulation wrap, the loss would not be as bad. When you move into the house you are building, I would wrap the tank with insulation, and install the heater in a closet, so heat loss would be minimal. As for a low flow showerhead, I would recommend an Oxygenics shower head made for RV's. Not only is it low flow, but you can switch it off and on as you shower (some call this taking a navy shower). To minimize overall water useage.

@MrJamesPottorff
@MrJamesPottorff 8 лет назад
Be sure an check out the lo-flow faucets & shower heads designed for RV's. They are made in a way to maximize the use of the (limited) built in water tanks of an RV. Personally I use an Oxygenics showerhead in my RV, it allows me to cut the water off/on while showering, ans uses very little water. Which is good, as I only have a 6 gal water heater in my RV., I would also look into building a bulk (solar) hot water heater tank outdoors, (ground based) and use it to pre heat the water that feeds into your indoor water tank. Making your water heater even more effecient. As it will heat the water much faster. I would top that off, and send the output of your water heater, thru the on-demand heater to use as a last resort for extended bad weather, cloudy days. That would give you 3 ways of making hot water 1- Outdoor (solar) bulk water heater 2- Indoor (dump load) water heating 3- Final (on-demand) as last resort water heating You should never have to use up propane with the on demand unit, and would never run out of hot water!
