I can still remember being in the car on my way to my cabin in the mountains. I was stuck in traffic with my family. We listened to the radio and everyone was doing okay. Then, it came, the bomb. The car jumpd a few centimeters off the ground and the radio had sirens and the host was saying "What the hell was that?!" It gives me shivers thinking of this very moment of my life. I was lucky as our car was far enough away to not get blown up.
I'll take shit that never happened for $500. You would have to have been right next to the explosion for your car to even shake, let alone jump "a few centimeters off the ground".
@@Maurauth it was an exaggeration to tell you that the car went multiple centimeters off the ground. this is 8 years ago now, of course i dont remember every detail. but damn the car shook and i was a lil kid so to me it seemed like the car jumped. you believe what you wanna believe
This movie is 10/10, because how real and accurate it is, im norwegian and my big brother has been to Utoya summer camp, im happy that he did not go to the camp that year.
I lost my best friend as much as i am still in deep Depression and have anxiety I can still remember her and the good times we shared. Enjoy your peace Rania. everyone should be happy that they are alive no matter what.
Why is everyone all upset about it being in English. I'm from California and have never even heard of this attack but now I can learn about it and research it more. If Norway wanted to make a movie about 9/11 in their language so that Norway could better comprehend it, I really don't think I would be that upset about it
To me the accents were really off-putting. They are never consistent and it switches from them saying something in English with a thick accent to a name in Norwegian with perfect pronunciation. In my experience it subtracted from the quality of the film and how immersed I was in it. I don't think I could bare to watch a 9/11 film in Norwegian, I much prefer English. (documentaries are different though)
Yes, it just reaches a larger audience.. The movie (imo) is not meant for you to sympathise with the killer. I (from canada) had never heard about this either. I don't watch news.. A thought provoking movie for me.
How on earth haven't you heard of this attack?! It was the biggest attack in Norway and one of the biggest attacks in a non warzone ever. Not everything is 9/11
I thought it was wonderfully done, and wasn't exploitative. I'm glad I hadn't read any reviews before I saw it, as they may have influenced my opinion. I'm sorry so many are angered by the language choice or the decision to make this film at all. I see their points, but others as well.
I just finished this movie in netflix and I didnt know something horrible and tragedy happened in Norway. The movie felt so real. The actors their lines and their emotions I felt it right through my heart. To the 77 people that were killed you will be remembered.
@@InfiniteCuriosity1210 Nope. These days white mass shooters get remembered far longer than brown or Islamic terrorists. We live in a new era of wokeism...
I have watched many terryfying docu films. But I was afraid to watch this. Untill now. The way he shoots kids, like on animals without emotions, gave me the shivers thru my whole body. Hunger games in real life. No way to escape or to defend. Very painful moment in history of men kind.
As a Norwegian, I’m really looking forward to this movie, mainly because I believe in Paul Greengrass’ ability to make realistic movies from dramatic situations. I agree that Erik Poppe’s movie is better, but that movie wasn’t seen by many people outside of scandinavia. This movie isn’t really made for Norwegians, we know the details of the events themselves and the trial that followed. This movie is for all the people who doesn’t know, and everybody should know
Yes, I'm Canadian and remembered hearing about this event on the news and reading some about it online but the way it explains the facts many times helped me understand the whole event better (and read more about it).
As a morrocan muslim person that film felt realistic and it just make me cry and hate terorist even more I wanted to watch it cause for one the terroriste is a white person but then i imagined myself at the place of the other felow teenagers and honestlly i felt terrorised a bout the idea of loosing m'y sister in sutch a way or diying in sutch a way
why in the hell would you make a movie about this, don't give this man any more publicity, he is laughing his arse off in prison that there is a movie made about him......
>Make movie about a horrific mass murder event >Make the Norwegians talk in english with a horrible accent Thanks, its gonna be the one major distraction in this.
Problem is why are they talking english? If they had to go with Norwegian actors make it in Norwegian with dubs optional like La casa de papal and so on. Would be much better then this joke of speaking... Who thinks Norwegians ran araound Utøya talking English with a horrible accent.
Because Paul Greengras is British and because this is made for netflix, therefore it's going to be available to an international audience. You would prefer a terrible dub? And most Norwegians apart from the younger generation do have a terrible accent. I find it hard to believe that most of the actors would be able to speak fluently with an American accent.
Simply put, to make it more accessible for other countries. Here in Norway, we are used to subtitles, but other countries, America especially, seem to generally not be accustomed to movies with subtitles; they are more likely to be dismissed as "foreign films." But with the dialogue going on in English, some will probably have less of a problem with watching it. It's a Netflix movie, so I guess they want it to be accessible for all Netflix users in that respect.
to reach a wider audience. english is the second most spoken language on earth. personally, i don't mind subtitles, but i have to be in the right mood and sometimes it bothers me that i am missing the movie because of my eyes having to be focused on the bottom of the screen.
Why are they speaking english in schindler’s list and in the boy with the striped pyjamas, even though they are german. It’s so that the movie can reach an international audience.
I was in a club here in the UK with a girl who just so happened to be from Norway. She was inconsolable. Felt so sorry for everyone involved from such a beautiful country.
MaddieEdits it's totally a bummer, I mean look to the tv show Dark ,a german show with the german language yet it was absolutely fantastic but they have to put english audio to its features.
Jean jack albert lt's a letdown but there is a movie about 22 july in Norwegian and made by Norwegians. From what I've heard it's a good movie. Atleast Netflix hired Norwegian actors.
I am a bit worried about this. The tragedy that was 22 July is still haunting people to this day. When the Norwegian movie Utøya 22 Juli by Erik Poppe came out, people said it was too soon for a movie about the incident. However that movie was solely about the experience of the people on the island, and there was no sight of ABB. It recognized that no one but the people who were there would ever know what it was like, and that it was just a way for others to get a feeling of what it was like. The movie was a good reminder that we should never forget what happened and those who suffered and are still suffering. This however, has someone playing the part of the killer. It is extremely uncomfortable to see as he is one of the most disgusting human beings of all time and is still pushing his ideology. Highlighting him like this is wrong, and should not have been done in my opinion. The focus on the aftermath should be interesting though, and even though I wish the actors got to speak Norwegian I guess the English will open up to more audiences (they could have used subtitles though). Utøya 22 Juli tore me apart, it was quite frankly brutal, like it was supposed to. I'm sure this will be hard to watch as well, but I'm worried it will be for the wrong reasons. I guess we'll have to wait and see. (sorry for the long comment)
The film producers have talked to the survivors and family's of the deceased and gotten permission to do so. Google and search a bit before blabbering out that this is insensitive. If it isn't for them, then it sure as hell shouldn't be for you. Take the Boston Maraton bombing as an example, there was a movie made for that much sooner than they have for 22 july. People need to learn to stop censoring and trying to forget the past, but rather inform the masses and have us learn from it and help understand why he did it.
I just finished this movie, and i can't imagine the fear of those young people. They're just my age, 18, and experiencing this tragedy and being killed by man with no compassion to others is very heartbreaking.
I rather like the " utøya 22 July" film's way than this, not showing ABB at all, just a small silhouette. Don't show the killer, don't give him spotlights. Give it to the victims, the ones that needs to be seen and remembered
+Mari Star Yeah, just googled around a bit and found out that the international title is u - 22 july. Weird how they (Netflix) made another film with almost the same name.
Exactly! I saw ‘Utøya 22 July’ and they don’t show the killer, which makes the movie focus more on the victims. It looks like this movie are all about the killer.
agree that disgusting human beein deserves to be put in a deep hole into the earth and be forgotten about. If i have had met that thing in person i would have tore out his f#### brain and fed it to ravens......
If I have read correctly, the movie does not focus on the attack itself but the aftermath and the people that were affected. I am choosing to think that the film is honouring the people that were injured and killed and their families, rather than focusing on the monster. I will wait until I've seen the film before I draw any conclusions.
I had no idea about this attack but being a paul greengrass fan I decided to give it a shot and all I can say is that this movie was freaking powerful-powerful in the sense that it's inspirational how the victims fought to get their lives back toghether after the attack.
There already is an intense and sincere movie, called 'Utoya 22. juli'. It's Norwegian, with Norwegian amateur actors and feels completely authentic. I can understand the idea of telling the story of the aftermath, instead of the tragedy itself, but why in English with English/American actors and added suspense? Just doesn't feel right. Are people really that scared of authenticity and subtitles? This tragedy should speak for itself, not commercial reasons.
OP is not referring to this movie, which indeed has familiar Norwegian actors, but the movie "Utøya 22. juli" by Erik Poppe. That movie is known for amateur casting, and was very well reviewed.
@MsSarahelac: Please read the post before screaming a reply. Thank you. I am talking about a different movie. And thank you @kbjerke91 for pointing that out!
It looks as if you're on an edgelord crusade on this comment section. I know that life is not always easy, but keep your chin up. Things have a habbit of sorting themselves out if you keep persisting. ❤
I"m from Norway and are proud of how strong our country has become, after the tragedy of 22July. I Think it is good that Netflix makes a movie about this tragedy. That shows the rest of the world that Norway is a strong country and won"t give up. Even when you are hit with a tragedy such as this.
I was 15 years old in 2011. It’s so sad to hear this huge tragedy happened to those beautiful lives and friends. They would have deserve a much bright and brilliant life now if this didn’t happen! Feel deeply sorry for these beautiful lives and condolences to their families and friends .😢🙏
Honestly one word, AMAZING! The performance by the the performers and the direction utterly incredible. This movie opened the door way to resolve many problems and connect many unidentified dots. Mind blowing and suspenseful direction as well as skilled acting successfully drew the viewers attention. Very informative and educational at the same time. Instead of targeting the wrong goal, it is always blissful to point out the proper problem to resolute accordingly. Mesmerizing open eyes movie.
Revenge are not a solution for peace, new testament says let God take care of it, don't play a god. Batman and Avengers movies are trying to replace God. God is the avenger, not humans. Romans 12:19 King James Version *19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.* And also forgive this guy, since you want to be forgiven as well. Ephesians 4:32 King James Version *32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.*
I did not know about this terror attack and my heart just broke watching this. I plan on watching both movies. But I just want to say. My heart goes out to anyone affected by this. Kids that never got to live out their future. Had so much ahead of them. That just wanted to laugh and learn and have fun. My heart hurts for them. Hurts for anyone that has gone through anything like this 😔😔
So, a movie made by an English director, about a Norwegian tragedy, played and portrayed by Norwegian actors with very bad mixed english accents? Im from Norway, and this really makes no sense. It sounds awful
Why English?"- 1)To get international viewers and big money from Netflix. This was not aimed only for Norwegian viewers. 2) I think he was aiming for the Best Pic category for Oscars..If they were speaking Norwegian it would have to go through the process of scrutiny and selection by the Norwegian film board to apply for the Oscars and that too it would have only gone in the Best Foreign film category, instead of Best Pic. Plus with the sensitive topic, I don't think they were confident they would have been selected by the film board.
Wrong! If that’s the mindset you have then you’re a degenerate with no moral standards. That’s not all the sense one needs, otherwise you can’t function in a society.
As an English person. It makes perfect sense to me. The accents serve the purpose of reminding me it is set in Norway. It is in the English language so I can understand it. Every country makes films like this, in their native language, set in other parts of the world, with accents. The fact that this movie is a tragedy and true story, should not change this.
😥😥Even tho though is a very depressing story i think the movie will be great cuz it seems like this one has more details than the norwegian one, like when the bomb go off
What I don't get is why they didn't just sub the whole thing? Or at least get actors who's English doesn't stick out as a sore thumb. It's as if they want to play into the stereotype that we're all this bad in English? I'm seriously unsure if I'll be able to actually ignore the silly accents and let myself go into what seems to be a well written story. IMO they should have done a Narcos; have all the Norwegian cast actually speak our language, and maye throw in some English speaking dude (authenticity be damned) to serve as the audience's (American's) window into all this.... not just straight out pander to people who doesn't want to read subtitles because it's "tiresome". EDIT: How did I not think of this: SKAM. Goddamn Skam took the world by storm, and that was all in Norwegian. You'd think that would have been an eye opener. I guess they were to far into production when that happened, huh...
Gudiana I think they originally planned to shoot it in both norwegian and english and then changed it to just english... however, I find it interesting that the guy playing Stoltenberg speaks way better english than Stoltenberg himself x)
I remember reading about this in a magazine a year later on a flight on the way to university in a whole new country, away from my family. Till date this incident and the horrors people faced at the hands of one single horrible man, has stayed with me! 💔
Who else remembers when they covered this story on My Favorite Murder? I had never heard of this before then. Movie looks great even if it is in English.
It stopped leftist Marxist ideology which caused already thousands deaths in Europe and would bring same Islamic terrorism and afro crime to Norway , REMEMBER LEFTISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER OF UNEMPLOYABLE MORONS . Because foreigners are not used to subtitles and will dismiss the film before watching it. By making it in English, it will be more accessable to other countries
Because its not a Norwegian movie. The director Paul Greengrass has said that the reason they did it in English was that it would be difficult for him to direct the movie in a language he himself didn't speak or understand. The movie is not a Norwegian funded or produced movie. It was written, directed and co produced by Greengrass about an event that took place in Norway.
@@kristinelizabethbarker3459 If he cant understand norwegian why even use norwegian actors at that point just sounds stupid with their exaggerated norwegian accents. I've grown up watching movies with subtitles can't americans read?
As a norwegian, i would recommend watching the documentary of this horrific and sensitive incident instead. This is just shameful and i feel disrespected that this movie is bringing this into the limelight, just as breivik was hoping for..
1337Deli Bro, here in America, a movie entitled United 93 hit the theaters less than 5 years after 9/11 and showed the event from the perspective of the hijackers alongside the passengers. This is no different. It’s not glorifying the event, just showing it from different perspectives.
My only question with Norway is what is up with the 21 year maximum sentence law? I get you can keep adding time when their time is served but, wouldn’t it just be easier to just sentence them to life right away?
He’s gonna be in prison for the rest of his Life anyway, so I don’t get the issue. We believe in rehabilitation not punishment that’s why our max sentence is 21 years.
Linnea Bee Good. Just in case there would be reason that he can rehabilitate! When a prisoner is sentenced to life, he knows his fate, and feels nothing.
What a gripping experience watching this film about the tragic events of July 22nd in Norway! It's incredible how it manages to capture the devastation of that day and the courage of the survivors and affected families. The quest for justice and healing depicted is truly heart-wrenching and reflects the resilience of the human spirit. Definitely a movie that leaves you pondering the power of love and hope in dark times!
I saw it. I wished it was in Norwegian but hey. It was heart wrenching and compelling. It honestly had me in tears. I'm from the UK but my girlfriend of the time was Norwegian and her mother was promoting a book a street across at the moment of the bomb. In that moment she was in complete panic. Censorship is not the answer. It happened. In fact I believe censorship plays into the hands of fascists and that is one of the underlying factors behind the attack. The important thing this movie conveyed at the end is that Breivik was left isolated and alone by his mother and even the Alt Right. This movie provokes a conversation nobody likes to have, but an absence of dialogue is a breeding ground for violence. Freedom of speech, democracy and rule of law. It will never be a perfect system but it's the best we have and the only way to thrive.
Why are people so upset about this? Why aren’t we allowed to see a story from the perspective of the killer? This is just reality, and we can’t change that.
I think they're concerned that its not "from the perspective" and will be "glorifying his perspective" its an important difference to make in a tragedy like this.
Hahaha alltsååå jag cringar åt den dåliga engelskan. Lika dålig som när vi svenskar försöker 😂😂 men ska ändå se denna då jag är ett stort fan av true crime och dokumentär 😇
I was ugly crying on the shooting scene. The fact that this is from a real life story terrified me so much. How much more those people who actually experienced this terror. 😭
@@derekkroeker4328 Go to hell then. Let God forgive his childs you don't have to do it for him you can just understand that this is unnacceptable. Are you a victim from the attacks? No you are not ? Then stop sympathizing with a terrorist.
I think it is grand that Paul Greengrass casted actual Norwegian actors and that those speak very good English in the movie. They did not have to but they did it. Norway is one of the most educated countries in the world and its population speaks very good English. Other countries do not. Try to speak Norwegian and then complain again that they speak English in the film. Norwegian is not an easy language and Norway itself has three official languages and three minority languages. I have a lot of respect to all the actors. They did an amazing job! 👏🏻
That's cool but it shouldnt be that way. This movie should have made you puke. How in hell is it supposed to be great to see random kids getting killed by a terrorist ?.................
Often when you watch a movie and horrible stuff happens, you say hopefully it’s just a movie. With this stuff you can’t because it’s actually real and it happened in real life, I’ll never forget what happened that day
I hate that this happened and I'm so sorry to everyone who lost someone that day. I just hope we teach our children so they can teach their children how to be proper human beings and how the beauty of being alive is being a community.
Rest easy to all the beautiful souls that was taken that evening. What yall stood for are beautiful. And the fact that many of you guys tried to save loved ones is even more beautiful. And to Anders Behring Breivik, I wish you the worst in this life and the next.
I saw this film. It was surreal and powerful. People who complain about it being in English and accents being "awful" are shallow. I'm sorry to put it that way. The actors had accents, but if you follow any story, any movie, you forget about that in the first 15 mins. Also, director and filmmakers invest a lot of money to make such big productions. If this was in Norwegian, I would not have seen it as a South African. Film may be based in Norway on a story about Norway but cinema is global, more people speak and understand English than Norwegian. Please understand every individual doing any business wants their product to go as far as possible. Stop being shallow people.
I can't even imagine how it felt like to go through this in real life. What a heartless person you need to be in order to kill innocent kids and women :( This movie literally broke me down.
They put this in English when all the actors are Norwegian and then chose to show off the narccisist who clearly did this partly for fame 😔 feels a bit wrong to me... Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy the actors get their spotlight, they are all great. i’m just not sure this is the right way to go about this topic. It just shows how this movie is totally made with the intention to entertain (!!!) a broader audience and that there is an opportunity for netflix to make money off this very hot topic. This is an event that most norwegians remember very well, and I just can’t help but feel like this is gonna be just another thriller from netflix - only this time they are feeding off one of the darkest days in modern Norwegian history.
It's important to never forget that even a small and safe place like Norway can have it's dark moments in history. And this is an english speaking movie made by an english speaking director made for an international audience, it would be hard for him to do his job with an immense language barrier between him and the actors. Money has been made off of 9/11 and other tragedies, and not to be offensive, but it's been a good couple of years since 22 juli and it's only natural someone expressed this happening in other ways than books, media headlines and documentaries. You don't have to be a cynical jerk to create a touching story about a horrible place in history - take Schindler's List as an example. And the biggest narcissists are the journalists who made money by printing Breiviks face all over the front of VG for months on end after the terror attack.
ettenA I agree about some parts of your arguments, I can see where you are coming from ☺️ I’m just questioning the whole project as a whole, I get that the director is a foreigner and that production would be easier. It’s just that... I’d personally prefer if the international audience had any interest in this event, they’d watch Poppes version of the story (I must admit I have not seen that movie and I’m not planning to, but I’ve read comparisons of the two) Poppe is not presenting the killer as a character and he is not trying to make it onto the mainstream media market, but it is more like a tragic and deeply moving memoir in Norwegian (not that I know for sure). But it is certainly only shining a light on the victims. If international audiences have an interest they can easily put on some subtitles and watch that. I don’t think the world is craving multiple movies about this event, and certainly not one that tells the exact storyline that many serialkillers and terrorists would LOVE to be told about themselves in a flashy netflix doku-thriller format. The man that did this, and the future followers of his kind are driven by this type of bullshit. And I agree, online media blew his face up on every front page for years and years, just like they’ve done with every terrorist ever. And just like many directors have made hundreds of movies glorifying and detailing the lives of real life killers. I do believe there are studies about the way serialkillers find motivation and learn from other famous killers in order to have a greater impact than their idols... and that frightens me. Anyways, I know this is just my opinion and I totally respect your opinion as well. I think it is good that these movies bring up the discussion! I personally will not watch this movie.
Maria L 1. This movie is made by a American film maker. 2. This seems to more show the aftermath, not the killings itself. 3. Anders didn’t do this for fame, he did it for his point of view and belief, didn’t you watch the global broadcasting of his sentencing? 4. I too, am happy that these actors get the spotlight, they seem great. 5. This movie doesn’t seem to want money, just show how horrible this was.
Just watched this on Netflix and was compelled to come here and comment. Such a powerful and important movie. Well Done. A country where politics is performed by REAL people who take their jobs seriously.
The ignorance that some of the people in this comment section are sharing is outrageous. The whole point of the movie being in English is to share the story of the survivors and the ones who passed in the horrible massacre. Do not take knowledge for granted, and don’t try to take it away from others.
I can’t lie I wanted to cry many times & more so after seeing the young man get shot & his recovery. I’ve been shot & paralyzed. It’s hard to see ppl suffer in the process of becoming great. 🙏🏽
Norway isn't on trial, you are. "Are you sure about that?" The truly horrifying thing about this event is that theres thousands more just like him. A single man, well planned attack, well armed and intelligent. He is glorified forever in history.
Do you Norway people realize it was caused by a right winger? It's like no one realizes right wingers are dangerous. Here in America right wingers do this kind of thing every single year.

Like I stated in another comment, some countries, America especially, are very unaccustomed to subtitles. They are usually dismissed as "foreign films." So I guess since it's a Netflix film, they want it to be accessible for all their users in that respect.
Just because it's in English doesn't automatically mean the U.S, there are other countries where English is the citizens first language. But OJ The Viking is right, a lot of English speaking countries aren't use to or don't like Subs , I've heard people complain on why they have to watch a Chinese film (for example) and watch it in Mandarin/Cantonese. I personally love watching a film in its original language, I think it's weird when you don't. Netflix will probably have it available in Norwegian as the original language and have English, French, and German etc. audio available as well. And there are quite a few foreign Netflix films made in it's original language; Mr. Sunshine (Korean) , The Rain (Danish), and Cathedral of the Sea (Spanish) to name a few.
OMG...I remember... What sad moments! Seeing this now, brought memories, sadness is pervading me again. All those people killed, in the name of what?! My heart goes out to the survivor, and to the families and friends of those who were brutally killed, July 22, 2011... Rest in paradise to the others who died... LPM
Our world should be a beautiful place to be no matter where you live or what language you speak. I'm not sure why people have so much hatred in their lives. Its really sad.
Maybe because this is a company who wants to make money and they know that 95% of their consumers speak English and don't want to base the success of something on Norway which is like 0.07% of the world population?

I met the actual Viljar and his brother today and it amazes me how he managed to survive being shot times in the body and then once in the head. He told me and the group I was with that his brain was exposed and that he touched it. He was conscious for hours after he was shot until he got help and all he could think about was his younger brother (who was unharmed physically). And today they're living an alright life, aside from the mental scars created by this incident.
Movies of tragic, life changing, and even violent crime events have been made since film history began.this is no exception.its not glamourizing it,it's just making us think about it and to never forget the effect it had on the world.
I'm Indonesian and never heard about the event before. This movie is great. I just knew it played by norwegian tough the comment. but they're all so great. it makes the movie more realistic by using english in norwegian accent.
I'm glad the movie at least showed the political intention of the attack. Lot of people probably think he just attack random teenagers. All political. Same people who have ruined Sweden with suicidal politics are those same teens on the island. Same ideas, same suicidal pro-open borders future politicians. Murder is wrong but he basically did it for the greater good. Easy to understand why he did it.
