22 Year Old PlayStation 2 Lube Job | Good As New!

I'm sure after 22 years of playing on your PlayStation2 (PS2) console it starts to show some wear. In this video you'll find that this PS2's tray is not opening and closing smoothly.
It took roughly 5 minutes to lubricate the PS2 tray rod to fix the issue. It's a simple fix! Since we had the PS2 open I went ahead and lubricated the laser rods as well.

I bought a ps2 second hand over a year ago and I had to fix it recently to try and get the disc tray to eject and clean the laser (it still doesn't work sadly) and after watching this video I'm noticing a lot of differences between your ps2 and mine, one of the screws was a different screw than the rest and is silver, the ps2 didn't have the ribbon cables connecting to the power/eject buttons and my disc tray cover only has 2 screws holding it in. Hearing the difference between when you started the video and after applying the grease is like night and day, that's amazing, that is going to make the buyer of this console extremely happy for sure.

You’re absolutely right. When I first started fixing PS2 consoles, I noticed immediately there were different models. Some models I favorite over others. It’s like PlayStation was tweaking each model to make them easier to repair. Every time I purchase a PS2, I completely take it apart, clean it, and replace parts, if need be to make sure it is like new. It’s like giving them a tuneup. Lol I want people to feel like they’re getting a quality product regardless of how old it is. 😁

Great video! I was able to get it taken apart and lubed up. It is def better than it was but the disc drive tray still struggles a bit when it gets about midpoint when opening. I am thinking it may be the motor rather than the rails. Regardless, it def needed the grease. 2 out of the 3 rails had no grease whatsoever.

Just so everyone is clear, Lithium grease is a Petroleum based grease. Google lithium based greases and you will read about how it can deteriorate rubber and plastics. A lot of RC guys use red n tacky and I have even read the lucas marine stuff. I read one account of the white lithium each the rubber and plastic of a guys rc car. I wouldn't recommend using the grease in the video, unless the bottle states it's base is non petroleum based. Some if not all lithium grease is petroleum based, so do not assume lithium means no petroleum.

@juanquinones
@juanquinones Год назад
No problem! The worm screw was already lubricated but it’s a great idea to lubricate it if there is nothing there. I would only recommend cleaning the laser if the PS2 is having a hard time reading discs.

First of all, thank you so much for making this video!! I was able to do this with no problem following your video step-by-step. Unfortunately in doing so I wasn’t careful enough and the eject/power ribbon got disconnected from the system itself. Do I have to buy a new ribbon cable? Even though I still have the ribbon cable, but the blue part of it is off. I was wondering how disassembled it has to be. Would I be in danger of getting electrocuted from reconnected it? I’ve never had A PS2 before

I have a Hyperkin Retron 5 that the controllers and cartridges go in and come out with difficulty. I picked up some dielectric grease. @juanquinones

That’s a great comment. I looked up the Hyperkin Retron 5 since I’ve never heard of it before. Sounds like the moulding was designed to be a tight fit. I would not recommend putting any grease in the cartridge slot or controller ports. I’m not too sure what to use in your case.

Do you have any advice with a 39001 model reading ps1, and Blue disc slowly? Once the games boot they work flawlessly but when i first put the disc in or boot the console my PS2 39001 takes approximately 20 to 30 seconds to boot the game. 'Loads the DVD ps2 games just fine instantly within a few seconds Once it loads the ps1 or blue discs it plays the games just fine, not sure if thats normal for a 39001 model, bought this at a local retro game store
