dslociceroarchi... - One Year of Ownership - and a ride in the Rolls-Royce
It has been just over a year since I purchased my 86 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur. In this video I provide my assessment of the car and talk a bit about what it's like to own one. I even talk about how much money I've spent on deferred maintenance and repairs!
Do I have buyer's remorse? Gotta watch the video to find out!
The video was filmed with my GoPro while I drove the car to and from the park with my puppy.
If you are planning on building, here's a handy checklist to help you prepare:

After seeing some other videos highlighting cars, something that impressed me is how well that car handles, and how smooth it all seems. As someone who's often wondered if buying a Rolls was a good idea - and considering vintage Rolls - I enjoyed your insights. Thanks!

The car compares very favorably to modern luxury vehicles in terms of quietness, ride, and handling. It does have more body roll on turns than a modern car, but RR fixed that in later models. What modern luxury cars don't have is the fit and finish and quality of the interiors. And for what these cost now, the amount of luxury you get per dollar is astounding.

Biggest problem with these cars is owners don't maintain them correctly, for obvious reasons, and they, the cars, keep running regardless. Very important to give them long runs and make that big lazy engine work. Short trips and they run rich washing through to the oil. Service it, make it work and you and your dog will be more than happy.
@dslociceroarchitect
@dslociceroarchitect Год назад
Yeah, the maintenance can be expensive if you can't do it yourself. I have a great specialist mechanic who I've been using to maintain the car and take care of the issues it had when I bought it. At the moment, I don't quite trust it to go on a truly long drive, but I will take it up to 70 or 100 miles round trip. Once we've take care of a few more things on my list, then we might take it further afield. But the worst thing you can do is just let the car sit in the garage not using it at all. You gotta drive 'em!

Man, I love your Rolls! The color combo is just perfect and so elegant. Like you, I’ve always admired Roll Royce automobiles, but never seriously considered one until recently. I bought a W140 Mercedes S500 about six years ago and it hasn’t been the money pit I’ve always heard they were. Could I dare imagine and hope a nice condition Silver Spur would be about the same ownership experience, cost wise? LOL

It is a beautiful car. The two-toned Oyster over Black is very elegant. I was enchanted by the car before I even saw it in person. These cars can be had at fairly reasonable prices. I actually think that if you don't want a project car, you need to find one that has been driven and taken care of. If you buy an older, low mileage Rolls, you are likely to be the owner that experiences the wide range of expensive repairs. And that is no fun. But if the car has been driven, previous owners are more likely to have had to face those repairs. But check the repair records to be sure they really took care of the problems. I have a 3-inch 3 ring binder full of the repair records for my car from the warrantee work right on through to the stuff I'm having done. There are a few gaps, but it's fairly complete. The Spirit/Spur vehicles from the 80s can be had at remarkable prices. The ones built in the second half of 87 through to the end of 89 (the 20,000 series in the VIN numbers) are considered the most reliable of the RRs from this period.
@Keeferlgb

Thank you for the info and thoughts. I agree, a bit higher mileage and thorough records is probably the best combo.

Hi David - Greetings from Tucson. I'm luvin' the video Sophie and you have posted and you've reinforced the thought that the car IS worth the expense. I'm delighted to have Mama's 1991 Park Avenue, which I've maintained 'as new' since her passing in 2002, and do not want another 4-door, but a 2-door, and have been looking for a 1946-1947 Packard Custom Super Clipper Coupe, as well as a Bentley or Rolls Royce Coupe, for years and have decided, for my birthday May 31, I'm gonna have one or the other, leaning towards a Continental R Bentley or a FHC Rolls Royce Corniche.' Thanks for the video...

Jerry, thank you for commenting! It is a lovely car. The Packard Custom is such a beautiful car! Good luck trying to find one. There may be more RRs and Bentleys about that meet your needs. I picked up my Spur on my 59th birthday. It's really a lovely present to give yourself. :)

Ma786sai Dua a wonderful Rolls-Royce Spur. @dslociceroarchitect
@dslociceroarchitect Год назад
Sophie is a diva. She prefers to sit in the font seat, if it is empty, on the way to the park. After a walk and time chasing squirrels, she prefers to sprawl in the back seat where there's more space. And her Daddy is too indulgent. Ahem.

@dslociceroarchitect
@dslociceroarchitect 2 года назад
Given the poor quality of the GoPro mic, I'm surprised you could hear it. I didn't notice and went back to listen for that rumble in the video. I think what you are hearing is either the tires on the pavement and/or the wind noise from the open windows. The engine does have a nice V8 rumble, which is dampened by the acoustic insulation in the engine bay, and is barely audible in the cabin, but I can't hear it in the video.

She's as much a part of the family as my spouse. I also don't see any reason to treat my car, which is a driver, not a show car, like a museum piece. These cars were meant to be used. I do need to put a towel down on the back seat, and vacuum the interior fairly frequently, but that's what you do for family.
@jasminespencer3992
@jasminespencer3992 Год назад
Mayi ask what the purchase price was?
@dslociceroarchitect
@dslociceroarchitect Год назад
Sure. I'm working on a video outlining the costs, but I can share that I paid $16k for the car. The Spirits/Spurs are currently undervalued and depending on the condition, mileage, and so on, can vary between $12k and $25k for the pre 1987 cars. The 87-89 "20,000 series" cars (VIN numbers) are considered some of the most reliable RRs, and their prices are consequently higher. As they say, there is nothing as expensive as a cheap Rolls-Royce. And I have learned that. I've invested a considerable amount of money in taking care of repairs and delayed maintenance, and I haven't finished the list of mechanical things yet.
@jasminespencer3992

@@dslociceroarchitect Cool thank you I was just watching where you said your initial estimate was 11,000, so I was just thinking if the car was worth 27K in perfect condition. But it looks like a beautiful car and a fun project and certainly more exciting than a Honda Accord

Leather is very durable. We keep her nails trimmed. This isn't a show car, though it's in good condition. She's been riding in the car a couple times a week for over a year and the seats are fine. Most of the time she sits up and looks out the window and isn't hoping around in the car. If I thought for a minute she might damage the car, she wouldn't be allowed inside. The biggest issue is needing to vacuum up all the hair!
