Great video. I love the .222 Remington. Mine is a 1965 vintage Revelation model 225. Of course yes a Savage 340 wearing western auto stores brand. It always favored Speer 50 and 55 grainers. Gun hasn’t been shot much in decades but I’m changing that. I just got a deal I’m happy with on Speer bullets in 50, 55, and that 52 grain HP like you’re shooting. My rifle used to turn in dime size groups with regularity. I hope it’s still like that.
OAL dictates barrel harmonics related to the seating depth. So of course it affects point of impact. This is also why barrel tuners work. They change the harmonics causing a point of impact shift similarly to change in the seating depth. Good info!
CD, I was watching some of your older videos with your 223 on a dog town where your bullets were shedding their copper jackets. I found the same thing happened to me. I was using a 223 in the police in South Africa in a anti poaching operation and also had a suppressor on the weapon. The round used was a FMJ 55 grain bullet made by PMP and it was pushing the limits with speed in a 19 inch barrel with a 1:9 twist as they were specially loaded for us by the government suppliers. After a lot of testing we used a high speed camera to film the rounds and found that when the bullets were passing through the suppressor the turbulence created by the baffles in the suppressor was causing the rounds to shed their jackets. We removed the suppressor and this did not happen. This may also be what is happening to your rounds. We solved the problem by getting them to load a heavier bullet (76 grain) and all our problems were solved. The slower twist and the suppressor did something to cause the shedding of the jackets as we had no problems with the same rounds in a faster twist barrel with a suppressor (1:12). I hope this helps
I ordered mine (222) with a 1 in 8 and a 24 inch magnum contour barrel from Shaw. Haven't been to range yet. Hoping it can handle some heavier bullets, If I can find any load data Maybe this week. My Remington 700 with the 1:12 twist will put 55 gr Vmax into .67 at 200 yards. It won't stabilize much past 60 gr. I'll stick with the 55 gr VMAX Flat base for that one. Seating depth from what I remember was just whatever the book said for the OAL. It would NOT shoot 55 gr Nosler BT Varmint as well. We'll try those in the 222
Hi from France, I am really keen about 222R for decades and I reload differents loads (N133, Norma 201 for the powders) . This caliber is highly sensitive with wind . And I don't shoot 50 grs bullets . I shoot Sierra 52grs HPBT , Speer SP 55grs and Hornady FMJBT 55grs for better results (100 & 200m) . OAL, especially free bore is huge with 222 due to heavy bullets . There are informations about deep seating with 222 in USA .
Interested to see your results from the 52 grainers. I happened to get a few boxes of Berger 52Gr Varmint for my .222 but I wasn't sure if they were too large for my .222's 14" twist. But it looks like they might work OK from your results.
The difference in groups could be barrel harmonics that first group, being 5 inches in the second group being well under an inch (same Speer 50 grainers) could very well have something to do with the barrel harmonics, easy way to test is to do a seating depth test for example 223 rem. 2.260 load 3 at that length next 3 at 2.263 next 3 at 2.266 next 3 at 2.269 etc etc with the same powder load and you can watch the group shrink and or grow like a bell curve. My 223 rem is 2.282 with 69grain smk with 24.6 grains of H4895 at 3017fps
Yes. Bullet depth matters to COL. Once you find the chamber sweet spot or as some say the accuracy node with the COL, then you can adjust bullet depth plus or minus to get the best results. I used to chase the lands but I don't anymore. I used to think that all chambers liked the bullet close to the lands but found out that some chambers don't like the bullet close to the lands. I have a .223 that is a prime example. It absolutely hated the bullet close to the lands so I eventually found the chamber sweet spot that it did like and that was way back off the lands. Now my .222 loves the bullet close to the lands. I also had a .25-06 that loved the bullet close to the lands. But my .223 and also my .22-250 does not. My .222 and .223 like IMR 4198 fast burn but I use medium burn IMR 4895 for the .22-250. I plan on getting some IMR 4064 eventually that is suppose to be a good medium burn all around powder for many rifles. Bullet types with different weights, shapes, and ogives will also shift point of impact so the depth has to be adjusted for this variation also. Concentricity also can cause deviation and for precision shooting it may be more of a factor so case neck turning can improve concentricity although I have never gone that far. But recently I have gotten some case neck turners since it might help.
Never liked loading them that long. Depending how long and neck tension, the bullet can move as you ram it in to the rifling causing different seating depths and open groups.

I've owned my Remington 700 Varminter in .222 since the 70's, I shoot 40 grain V-max with IMR4198 very accurate and good velocity. But back in the old days I loaded Hornady 55 grain SX with BLC2, one hole groups and deadly on ground hogs. I was very happy until I got a chronograph and found out the velocity was only 2950 fps, so I switched to the 40 V-Max.
Shot the rifling out of this rig with BLC-2. 23 grains and any bullets 40 to 60 grains, but mostly 50gr SXs. This started when I was 13 years old. Funny thing, I thought ALL rifles were that accurate, what the hell did I know.
My 223 did not like the Speer 52gr hollow point. Nothing better than 1 3/8" across a variety of charge weights. 50gr soft point was excellent. Haven't been available tho..
I've had good luck with Nosler Varmageddon bullets in 17 up to 6mm. That said, the BC doesn't compare all that well with the V-MAX. Very accurate and explosive though. Slightly cheaper on average.
I have found over the years some jump always shot better.. I would crimp Midway of connular .. and always shot quarter inch moa or better..never had luck with setting close to lands.... Last thing on bucket list is to shoot prairie rat with cw... but it's to late for that now
Any one notice that in the first group the bullets are not going through the target straight on . The rest of the groups have good round entry. I think the first group were in wobble c k k
I own a Remington 700 .222 magnum it was used apparently for long distance I bought it of a an old friend of mine he was 80 years old and he inherited this rifle from his father in law it shoots sub moa no problem I would like to know how old it is anyone can help I would appreciate it very much, thanks for sharing some shooting of this fabulous round
My question is with those 2 in dots where do you aim? I was always told a small, miss small . I know we’ve shoot millions of rounds and don’t need my advice but if you put a small dot in the center of the 2 in dot , do you think it would shrink you groups?
