The robot lawnmower never complains about having to mow. Worth the price right there.

My sticking point with the robo mowers is, like a normal lawn mower, it can't do all the detail stuff (edging, around trees, etc). Sure, it's quicker to 'clean up' and do that yourself, but if you're shelling out $4k (or even $2k), and still have to do that work, a lawn service that will do it all still looks like the better prospect (obvs local costs vary). That isn't to say a robo unit won't be able to do those details, but we're not there yet.

I want as nuanced a view as you can shoehorn into a 10-20 minute video. It's not about positive or negative, it's about complexity. You walk this line pretty well. Keep it up!

Moving to California solved my mowing problems. The redwoods keep the sunlight down from October to March, to the point the grass doesn't grow much. The rain stops in May, meaning no water for lawns May - October, so the lawn only really grows in April and May, so maybe mow 2-3 times in total for the year. We've decided to grow a native wildflower meadow instead of a lawn, so I just cut it once in late June to keep the wildfire risk down. Then I'm done for the year.

I live in Central Texas. We're on ~3 acres, and what little "lawn" we had when we moved in is now all weeds. We dpent $150 on native seeds to try to reestablish a more native enviro. The "sad" part is that we liblve near some 50, 100, 200 acre ranches that have 3-5 acre yards and mow them (they LOvE the zero turn radius mowers here) All the cattle around take pretty good care of rhe rest of the areas (or they're mowed for hay)

What I like of the channel is that it shows a bit how things work. Then I can make the decision if it is good or bad or more likely, which applications are valuable for Humans and which are destructive.

You know when commenters are giving you grief about mowing your lawn, it’s time to relax about comments and enjoy the fact that you’re doing such a great job that that’s all the complainers could throw at you. 😆

the robot vacuum i just purchased for less than $600 was over $1,000 a year ago. There are plenty of cheaper guide by wire mowers out there now under $1,000 even, and from my experience owning one it worked just fine for the most part. i just didn't get to operate it from my phone so i had to check on it when it got stuck and fix the boundary wire when it got broken.

In the 1990’s I first saw a robot mower at a farm expo in Iowa that looked like someone took the mowing deck off mower and slapped a solar panel on it. I have been waiting 30 years for these things to get to a reasonable price. I think they seem cool but are still way too much money.

You can have an app that need no server. After it is installed communication is directly via Bluetooth or WiFi. You get no new version if the company go boost, but it will work just fine.

1/3 acre = 14520 sqft so, even with subtracting the footprint of the house, the mower would be much cheaper than gravel.

28:18 iRobot vacs do run without access to the internet. As far as I can tell the app still connects to the vac without the internet.

If you want a sustainable automatic mower with built-in composting feature, get yourself a pet goat 🐐. You're welcome!

Worse than negativity is false positivity or just do the corporate speak talking points. As long as the cons are laid down in a constructive and contextualized way they will enrich the conversation.

I agree that there is a lot of negative "out there". But I do wonder how much of that negative is just reactions to other negative reactions and not from informed sources. Journalism used to be much more of a thing... now I feel we all need to fact check things that we shouldn't have to. Thankfully we watch a channel that is, imo, written critically. As for software updates, forget the semi-autonomous rolling blades of death, what if Tesla goes out of business? I'm sure people will scoff at the idea but, have you ever seen how many auto manufacturers there've been, and not just one-offs like Hank's Blacksmithin and automuhwhachamacallits. (located between Wright Bros. Bicycles and Levi Strauss's shovels and pick axes.) Has there been any discussion anywhere about what to do if Tesla Inc one day has the magic blue smoke?

it's straightforward, it gets the job done. I'd just like to know why Sean's voice is always quite NPR-esque in the first line or two. lol
