Thankyou, I have this radio and have invested much into it, replacing display pcb (yaesu) etc fitting battery bank, and this bias switch gotchya is a great tip to chk. for a power output issue.

Nice find Peter, I can't help but to think since that radio is a portable radio it may have been bumped a little too hard and the switch moved. At least it's something the new owner can check very easily if it happens again. Thank you for sharing. Always look forward to seeing your videos.
Good job troubleshooting this unit. What a convenient “fix.” One can only imagine why that switch was in a non-position. If I had to guess, maybe it was during the transport of the radio from his friend’s place it was stood up vertically (on the backside of the radio) so as not to damage the front panel and dials, and the bumpy vibrations of the road trip dislodged the switch from its normal-operation forward position. Or maybe the original owner switched it as a parting gesture . . .

In future videos it would be helpful for me if you could explain a bit about your test equipment set up when you are making measurements. I always try to see what model number and manufacture of the test equipment you are using and how you have connected everything. Thanks again.
Hello Peter! What was so frikken awsome aboutthis Radio that I loved on it was, the fatass solid VFO Knob. The Rest of it was good enough for the Garbage Can. There's actually no bad radios around - it's just about what you like or prefer to work with. The FT-897D as well as the whole Yaesu Production Line shortly after 2005 did not turn me on no more to buy them anymore. I am so into Kenwood and iCOM I completely canceled Yaesu from my book of HAM Radio RIG's. Thx for your excellent repair docu - keep up good work. 73's de DK5ONV
When he says "pre-amplifier", he means "driver for the finals", which, on the first FT-897's serie, are the same fragile transistors as is the FT-817's Power Amplifier, known to blow easily (not anymore on the latest 817s and new 818s). "Pre-amplifier" is commonly understood as the reception preamp so, don't be fooled, here, it is about the stage that drives the power amplifier transistors.
Very interesting and unusual and strange about the switch even it been knocked or dropped the switch cannot move it self as the switch did Click when you move the switch up and down Mmmmm yes of course somebody fingers been accidentally knocked it when they were looking inside it that's my guess. Great video and through checking, which is a good thing. That switch must have got quite a bang to move, either that or it is to easy to move! Anyway, nice work It is good to see you doing the work checking things over. :-))
If my fixed filters are bad. Can I just add in the optional filters and use them. To save having to pull the PCB and de solder and replace. Them I do know the optional filter cost a lot. But much cheaper then if I damage the PCB as I don't trust my eyes for that job.

i have one on consignment sat and got moved several times over 15 yrs i will check this. i wonder if moving and storing might have tripped it out. i reply if the one i have has the same problem
Hello, I have the same problem on an FT-857D to which 3 years ago I had changed the 3 ceramic filters and until yesterday it worked perfectly. While I was testing a V-UHF antenna I saw the output power zero on all bands and all modes and realized it couldn't be ceramic filters. Now I hope to find that switch and if that is in order, how can we fix it? Unfortunately I don't have your equipment. Thanks

What is the difference between the Yaesu FT-897D and the 897-DM. I bought one on ebay. Also when i received the radio, the Clar knobe was broken off and the Main Dial had come off, and wouldn't go back on. The inner part of the knob appears to be glued on to the outer part of the Main Dial. Suggestions? I'm a new HAM and not a real electronics guy.
@@TRXLab ja Peter du leider ist es was anderes so wie es aussieht sind die Final durch Driver bringt ein leichtes Signal aber langt nicht um zu schalten bzw das Relai arbeitet auch nicht ( Endstufenplatine ) mal sehen was die Teile kosten 😔
Nice video, my FT897 has low output on 80m, only making 50W’s max. Other bands are ok. Thinking it might be a relay issue in the filter section. Are there any issues i should worry about in removing the PA board to swap out the two 80m relays? Keep them coming love watching them. 73 TE
Relays are always a problem after several years of usage . The second question is related to your skill level which and the right tools I can't judge...
@@TRXLab The skill level is not a problem started work in electronics while still wet behind the ears in 1976 ;-). Ending in having worked in R&D for Avionics and Medical equipment when I retired in 2019 :-) The second question was really about, “are there any hidden screws or solder joints that need to be done first or in an order that's not easy seen to remove the PA board”. Watching the video I had my fingers crossed the PA board was coming out and it would make my relay change a breeze. Thanks for getting back.
Hi peter. Always Nice to see your video’s. The testpoint of the reference ocsillator is mounted at the underside of the mainbord. Is there a change to do that without removing the board. Grtz Aldert
AS a new owner of an FT897D I enjoyed your session on the EEPROM rework. I have had some local repeater characterisitics put into the memory but having some problems i getting the unit to scan those frequencies. Many of the Menu options are missing, so I am still searching for an answer.

Hi Peter, thanks for the video. Educational as always. I got a friend with a damaged processor on the main board. Yaesu wants him to replace the entire board and is not sending a programmed CPU only. Is there any way around this?
Hello, I have a yaesu FT 897, If it works on HF with USB, LSB, AM Mode the output power is only 4 Watt, but if it works on FM mode the output power is 100 Watt, on VHF and UHF works very well and no problems. I would be very happy if someone gave me an idea.
@@TRXLab I was able to creativly repair the knob with a small piece of 1/8" round brass filed with a flat so that it married the two pieces. I was careful not to let the brass go too deeply into the switch base. Its holding very snuggly.
