Brenda (Regina King) has a big crush on Calvin (Curtis Baldwin), so she seeks advice from Sandra (Jackée Harry), who decides to give her a makeover. When Mary (Marla Gibbs) finds out, she doesn't take it well.

No. She did not overreact. She behaved like a good mother who taught her daughter some modesty and respect. Many of the '80's clothes were tacky and suggestive. She did the right thing.

I remember the final season when Jackee Harry left and only made a few guest appearances, her character was sorely missed. There was supposed to be a spin-off with Jackee’s character, but it never made it past the pilot, which aired during season 4.

I love this show and what an amazing cast, Marla Gibbs and Jackie both gave this show the spice that it needed for black culture to be seen.

Good going Mary! These days most mothers would just smile and give in and start the daughter on her way to being "popular" with the boys. Except now the new outfit would be way more trashy. Mommy like Mary would probably avoid lot of teen pregnancy.

Classic episode. The writing was so strong in the early episodes. They messed with the formula too early.

I wouldn't say that, the black family dynamic in the Jenkins household has always been strong, but when they started adding more cast members I guess the writers had to change their style of writing
