A simple question why not CCI Stingers?
@PaulHarrell
@PaulHarrell Год назад
Simple answer: 1) Stingers are a 32 grain bullet, not really a fair comparison for the 40 grain projectiles in this presentation. 2) Someone sent me some hyper .22 ammo with light bullets. I'll use stingers as a basis of comparison for those in the near future.

I'd also like to send you some federal punch 22lr ammo.
@ShastaBean
@ShastaBean Год назад
One reason might be taking the distance your intended targets might be into consideration. When the projectile slows down to become transonic it can greatly affect accuracy. So much so, I've seen tests that prove subsonic .22LR is more accurate than the supersonic stuff when you move targets out. So if a person really wants to shoot 40 gr, then getting above 1300 (if you can) would let you shoot targets out to perhaps ~50-60 yards before dipping below the speed-of-sound and affecting accuracy.

CCI velocitor out of a rifle is adequate for self defense. I don't talk details, but I gave a family member several boxes to use with their self defense rifle. They sadly ended up having to use them and they were effective. I obviously did not ask her details about the shooting. I'm glad I did what I did because the federal blue box lead round nose ammo that she had was not cycling the weapon reliably when we had gone out to practice. The CCI velocitors did not fail to cycle even once. Ammunition choice is paramount when using .22lr.

Is there an affordable quality 22mag rifle?
@herbderbler1585
@herbderbler1585 Год назад
@@george2113 Depends on what kind of rifle you want. 22 magnum semi-automatic is not impossible but it's kinda difficult to get right due to the nature of 22 magnum cartridges. Ruger used to make a 10-22 Magnum but I think it's long gone. Savage makes the A22 Magnum with some kind of delayed blowback semi-auto action, but I couldn't tell you how reliable it is. There are also some oddballs such as the CMR-30. Most people already have some kind of opinion about Keltec's quality, and that might include you. No judgement, like what you like. 22 magnum lever actions range from what some would call cheap junk Rossi up to what some would call overpriced Henry. Some would also call Henry "you get what you pay for, so buy once cry once" and some would call the Rossi "good enough for most needs and affordable for most people" so obviously your mileage and judgement may vary. If you aren't looking for any kind of yeehaw rapid fire action, just a good plinker or varmint gun, the world of bolt actions is probably where you want to be. You can get a no-frills basic 22mag bolt gun for a few hundred bucks like the Ruger American Rimfire that is as accurate and reliable as you'd ever need, or you can spend a few hundred more and get a fancy tacticool version like the Ruger Precision Rimfire. Again no judgement here, get whatever fits your needs and makes you smile. Some other companies that make good affordable 22mag rifles are Savage and CZ, and I'm sure there are others. Either way, boltguns are probably the best place to get good quality 22 Magnum shooting without turning your wallet inside out. EDIT: seems like Rossi isn't making lever action 22WMR anymore according to their website, but they might still be floating around on the market. They do have semi-autos now. I guess I'm a little behind the times. Again I can't tell you how good they are personally, so look up some reviews. RU-vid is a great resource for finding out which guns are worth the money.

The .22LR videos always show that it's a mean little round no matter how pitiful it might be in comparison to its larger "real rifle" brothers. It wouldn't be my first, second, or third choice for self/home defense for me, but if you've got a wife/gf, a young son, or an older relative who might not be that comfortable with guns or strongly dislike recoil, a mag dump from a .22LR rifle stands a real good chance of sorting out trouble. And the fact that you can nearly effortlessly make a dozen center mass hits in quick succession is definitely worth considering. One or two hits from an AR will of course be better, but handing your 10/22 off to the spouse or eldest child just in case wouldn't be totally useless.

I’d be forgiving if they averaged 1350+ something out of a Ruger (because all the reasons Paul gives about chronographs). But they all fell short. Very disappointing. But since most people either use a .22lr for tin cans or small game maybe it’s not a deal breaker.

Thanks Paul for a great presentation. Something you talked about point of aim and point of impact. Personally I never had any issues with 22lr doing that whether I'm shooting pistols or rifles. And I have pretty good selection of guns in 22lr from semi auto pistols and rifles to lever action, bolt action single shot and revolvers. The 22lr seems to be pretty accurate no matter what bullets or guns I use. I've watched many of your videos where there was significant shift in other calibers but even in today's video there was very slight change but in my opinion not enough difference to make a difference. It appears to me that if you were hunting squirrels, rabbit, snake's or rat's they all were good enough to get a killing shot. If you have a different opinion please let me know or explain it. Is it my imagination or is 22lr just that perfect little round that's just accurate and consistent with the caveat that you have some odd rounds that either misfire or are under power but for the most part 95 percent of the time it's just an accurate round to shoot no matter what combination of rifle, pistol, or bullets you use.
@scottcrawford3745
@scottcrawford3745 Год назад
When shooting/testing many different .22LR ammo brands and types, you should always expect the first 5-15 rounds of each type to be "foulers". That's because nearly all .22LR manufacturers use different lubricants, waxes, oils and other substances to coat the bullets ( and sometimes cases). It takes a few shots to erode away the previous cartridge's type of lube for the current one's. That's why you will get weird aberrant behavior in both velocities and grouping, sometimes to the point that the first 10-15 rounds will make you think the ammo is junk. Also, Lot-to-lot variation in the exact same ammo can be very different, which is why PRS Rimfire and .22LR Benchrest shooters do a LOT of ammo testing, and buy up huge supplies of certain lot numbers once they find something their rifle "likes". Also, some types of .22LR ammo are very purpose specific, and don't/won't necessarily perform up-to-snuff outside those conditions ( Biathlon ammo is a perfect example, as the powder charges, priming compounds and lubricants are meant to operate in winter conditions from +5C to-20C ( 41*F to -4*F). In the summer heat, some of those are downright slimy or gummy to work with, while in their intended conditions are amazing. Also, You can spend a small fortune buying the best .22LR ammo you can find , i.e. RWS R-100, ELEY Tennex or Lapua X-Act and it will shoot terribly in some rifles, while just decent mid-priced ammo can shine with tiny cloverleafs, and vice-versa. Even several different examples the exact same rifle can "like" completely different ammo... or be completely terrible with others that perform well in most.

As I begin to watch the video, that Winchester Super-X jumps out very quickly. I had a recent, within the last month, experience with 2 boxes(200 rounds total) of that stuff. My 64F absolutely hated it. The gun would not pick up a new round, ejection extremely weak, plopping onto the bench I was shooting from, not even skidding off to the ground. My TX22, which had, before trying the Super-X, a whopping 3 malfunctions in total across several thousand bulk and premium cartridges, also had issues with it. Out of 200 rounds, between the two firearms, I had 17/100 and 29/100. I know the numbers exactly, as I counted and emailed Winchester about the major disappointment of their supposedly quality ammo. Edit to add : they were LESS accurate than federal automatch(36 and 40gr both) too. All that said, I look forward to seeing Paul's experience now :)

Great video , Mr. Harrell ! I usually purchase the ammo I use based on the printed velocity on the box. What I see is that they're all significantly below rated velocity and that's from a rifle length barrel . I was surprised to see that there was only a loss of about 100 fps when you fired the same ammo out of the handgun . I was expecting a lot less . I guess you'd have to use .22 magnum ammunition to even come close to these advertised velocities . Well , thank you very much , you're the "truth revealer" !

I tested accuracy with my specific rifle with 10 different types of ammo at ranges of 20,50 and 100 yards from a bench rest on a day with close to 0 mph wind. The Federal Automatch was hands down the most accurate in my gun. Results may vary for others.

I like Lead Round Nose for 22lr, the combination of price and performance is hard to beat. Hyper velocity, lighter weight rounds might expand more, and give you a little more energy, but that energy isn't going to do anything if it doesn't penetrate deep enough. The LRN is the best bet all around in my opinion. The copper JHPs might be slightly better for squirrel, but in an SHTF if you had to take out something bigger with the 22lr you'll likely need the penetration as opposed to an extra mm of expansion. Not to mention LRN are usually dirt cheap.

@PaulHarrell

Different barrels will produce different velocities (we have a presentation on that). Your difference in velocity is more likely from the barrel design than the factor of bolt vs. semi auto. there are videos in this format demonstrating this.

It would be interesting to compare different rifle systems against each other using the same .22 ammunition. The Ruger 10/22 blow back operation against a closed bolt, such as a lever action, single shot breech loading, and manual bolt action. Taking matching barrel length into consideration, of course. Likewise, with different pistol actions. I'm curious about the results in a comparison between the AR15 and a closed bolt action rifle chambered in .223 with regard to velocity and accuracy as well as what information the "meat target" might yield.
