the giver is a beautiful read. i read it in school in 6th grade and still have my copy. of mice and men is also a great read. we are using blossom and root this year and they seem to have some great reading and poetry.

My favorite book as a child was My Side of the Mountain and I told my parents a number of times that I was going to go live in a tree in the woods. I read this last year with my kids and they all really enjoyed it. Note there is a movie adaptation but it changes the story a bit.

May I ask why you use TGATB as a secular homeschooler?

There were a number of reasons- my kids were interested in it being the main one. Then there aren't that many secular options, though more are coming out every year. And it hasn't been difficult to edit for our family. I go through each unit to change the wording to fit our beliefs.
