A look inside the 2nd generation of a classic Alesis SR-16 drum machine, which was picked up on eBay for repair. It turned out that the machine suffered from a mysterious corrosive substance, which was found under some of the connectors. How did it get there? In the process of giving the machine its second life we had a chance to compare it with the 1st generation one.

That was amazing I have the older one and the 4 outputs for multitrack are a godsend. Now drum machines only have left and right. I put kick on left out Snare on right Hats and metal on aux left Tom's on aux right Superb setup into my daw with full control of the sound. Cheers

Mine does not work, its Like freeze, it seems to start but not at all, when I turn the switch on, the screen "turns on" but everything is blurry and there is no sound, pads don't work. What can I do?

Nice to see the difference between the 16-bit and the 24-bit Alesis SR-16. You say that nobody is using the tape in/out anymore. You are wrong, I do. I still use the Roland VS-1824 without a computer. In every song created on the VS-1824, I use a track that contains the backup of the Alesis SR-16 (16-bit version) made via the tape-out. When I resume a song, I restore the SR-16 via tape in. Tape in/out are only for analog backup and restore just like we did with old home computers like the Commodore 64.

Well, I decided to temporarily solder a leaded 2N3906 in place of Q2 and the unit is working once again. Replacement SMD parts will be here in a few weeks. Thank you for the inspiration.

When I was young I always wanted to get into the electronics field but for some reason I chose the automotive field. I wish that I stuck with electronics, it always seemed way more interesting to me. Wow ! Thank you so much ! I had almost identical issues with spilled liquid, corroded traces etc. This video resurrected my SR-16. Excellent detailed instructions !

Thank you for the video you're a very good teacher. I have an SR16 the old style and when I plug anything in all the sound only comes out of the Left Channel so I am going to try to fix that using the tracing techniques you have shown. I hope I have luck because I really like this machine and I'd rather not spend the money to get a new one. Thanks again for the great video!

I picked up an SR-16 for essentially pocket change because it had "no output." Initial tests show no discernible headphone output, and VERY faint audio on the main outs. I suspect this video will be quite handy for jumpstarting my troubleshooting efforts.

Well done. You confirmed that I should see +/- about 12 volts on the soft power outputs. I am working on the same power supply issue right now. The -12V buss opened under the 1/4 connector and shorted to the adjacent trace. I ran a wire and it worked for a while. Now, I have +5 control into the soft power circuit, -12V out of soft power, but I have lost +12 volt soft power. I have +12V on the emitter of Q2, but not at the collector. Seems Q2 is not turning on. I isolated the +12 V output to be sure there is no short downstream. I ordered some replacement transistors since all traces look good and the rest are just resistors. If that does not work, I am tempted to bypass the soft power circuit and run +/- 12 right to the soft busses. What do you think?

Another great repair. Could you please diagnose a computer desktop motherboard which beeps erratically on start up, gives no video output and keeps rebooting despite proper cooling. I'm sure others would be interested. Ps. what caused the damage to this musical insturment?

#FeedbackLoop : Some time ago, I have seen an other very good video about troubleshooting PCBs. This guy illuminates the PCB wit UV-Light and makes photos of it. So it was passible to see contaminations like from leaking condensators. I have testet thin method too and it works great!

Hi, Could you please help me with a SR-16 repair? It have the newer 2004 model. Sometimes when I plug in the 9v power supply, the words on the display show up for a second or two then it goes blank. Sometimes its just blank. Either way, it does not work. I suspected the battery was dying so I removed it, but I assumed it could still run on 9v power. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

I have an SR 16 from Reverb. When I got it the display was very dim. Now it doesn't work at all. Do you want it? I don't know what I'm going to do with it. I had one in the 90's. Had this one a couple weeks.

I have a SR16 that was made in 2016 and takes a 12v power adapter. Right now it doesn't come on at all and the board looks excellent with no hints at damage. Any ideas on what I should do?

What battery is in this, and when i remove the old one to place a new battery, will I loose all my songs and edits once the battery is out, or is there like 15 seconds time to get it back in? Can you please advise on this? Mike

Mojo Bro You will surely loose your patterns and such. The battery is soldered, so it is not a matter of 15 seconds to swap it. However, I believe there is a way to save and restore through MIDI somehow. Regarding the battery type, you may want to watch my other video about the older version of the machine, where I suggested using a socket for a regular 2032 button cell: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vleEClZmCso.html In that case the failed battery was Panasonic BR2325 Are you sure you need to replace your battery? They can last for decades. Did you measure the voltage? In a really desperate case it might be possible to replace the battery while the machine is powered up, but it is quite risky and tricky. One would need to have experience and be super careful not to short anything and not to interrupt the power. I would highly recommend exploring the backup procedure first if your custom patterns are important to you.

Do you think if I replace them myself it will work again . I've been using a 10v charger for my xr20 and I've been suppose to use 12v ... Did the piezo sensors turn brownish because of that ? But thank you very much I had trouble figuring that out !!

+Propa Gansta How do you know they are at fault? I don't believe it is possible to burn a piezo sensor. And I don't believe that using a 10V power supply instead of 12V can lead to burning anything at all.

Hi, I had a similar problem with corrosion under the fill switch jack and start/stop jack. I did the same repair as on your video but having done this the fill switch circuit is not working with a foot switch. It's difficult to find the traces for these. Where can I find a layout or circuit diagram so that I can repair this? Great informative video.

I have the 2004 version of the SR-16 I want to repair but I'm having a hard time identifying what's wrong with it. It simply doesn't turn on regardless of the power supply that is plugged in. I have noticed some residue buildup on the lithium battery and I am replacing it. Other than that, there's nothing I can see is wrong. Please let me know if there's anything I can try.

Is there anyway to upload a fresh batch of factory sounds on the tape jack behind the sr-16? I got one but the sounds are all corrupted

+Diablo Roberto How do you know the samples are corrupted? Do you hear distorted sounds? They are stored in a permanent memory. Perhaps, you have some problem with hardware.

+FeedbackLoop I think so too. I've seen both of your videos and I opened the machine up to check. I found several brown residue on the board under all connectors. It's the exact same problem like on this video.

Have a look into the manual. There is a way to configure SR-16 to either accept external clock messages over MIDI (clock in) or send clock messages to other devices (clock out).

I have an Alesis SR-16 from about 2005 - very rarely used. I got it out a few days ago, and after using it for about an hour, the display went blank and sound from the headphone jack started buzzing with a loud buzz - I was listening with headphones. A faintly burnt smell was coming from the back of the unit near the power supply jack (smelled like an old sewing machine when they would get hot), so I unplugged it and took it apart. I noticed the exact same "liquid" on several of the jack components inside the unit. I suspect I have a similar problem with liquid under the jack components inside - but I am wondering: What is the source of this liquid and what is it? This unit sat unused in my basement for years and was not exposed to high temperature or humidity - I keep the humidity at around 45% year-round. Any ideas about the liquid?

My only guess would be those 3 larger capacitors by the power input. Capacitors very in quality but they all go out eventually. That is just one of the ways they can go.

whenever I use user programs the volume is lower than the factory programs. This happened after I replaced the battery. Is there a way to program the volume back in like it used to be? so user programs have the same volume level as factory programs?

I hope you see this, I have an Alesis SR-16 I bought brand new about 5 years ago. My power adapter (9v) had a break in the power cord, and it fried my machine. I don't think there is any contrast adjustment. It would be great to have such adjustment. A back light would be great too...

You probably mean plug your guitar or something and this machine into the same amp, so that you can play with the rhythm. Sure, if your amp has an extra input.
