Here is my sowing list for August, the last chance to get seeds in the ground for this year (in my region). Maximise your garden yield and get as many roots in the ground for winter as possible! And at the end, I share a little experiment I'm doing this year with Purple Sprouting Broccoli.

It isn't too late for carrots if you plant a winter carrot, such as the Kyoto Red. They get sweeter after frost and prefer winter's cool weather. I love growing Daikon Radish in the Fall, and any that aren't pulled for eating are left as a winter cover crop to open the soil. Bunching onions can be planted in the fall and left to grow over the winter for very early green onions in the Spring.

Walking onions; are they the same as bunching onions. Usually we plant all onions & onion seeds now and manage to gain several harvests throughout the year, even with the south coastal wet weather. Often leaving some in the raised beds to harvest as & when.
@ohio_gardener
@ohio_gardener Год назад
@@helnyson4694 No, they are not the same. Walking Onions are perennials, that keep multiplying. Bunching onions are also called Spring Onions or Green Onions, and they are eaten green. Bunching Onions do not form bulbs.

Insects destroyed all cabbage, broccoli, despite insect netting. Animals ate half the raspberries, blueberries, tomatoes (tomatoes despite protective net bags over tomatoes-they chew thru the bags!). Animals ate 100% of corn, despite extensive netting. Beets in summer developed severe fungus. Potato beetle issues Zone 5b, partial sun (a clearance in the woods) Very difficult year

Hey Huw. I've sown purple sprouting broccoli early September last year and I had a very nice crop in May and June this year! Also, I didnt get a chance to cut down the plants and one of them is flowering again now!! 😮 So I'll have another crop in a week or so. This time I sown some seeds second half of July, but I didn't get a chance to repot them yet, so they're too small 🤦🏻‍♀️ so God knows what I'll get next year 😂😂

All these suggestions are very specific to your unique temperate climate. I live in Wisconsin, northern midwest usa, so temps are 30s in the summer and negative 30 in the winter at times zone 4, so believe it or not, my kale is dead by christmas typically but everything bolts in summer

Me too, here in Nova Scotia 🙄. Such a bummer. Wish it was more moderate here. But we do cover with plastic so kale keeps going until December and starts up again in March. Parsley, lettuce and spinach overwinter under there well too.

You never seem to have any insect or slug damage, nor any fungus disease.If I grew Kohlrabi without a net, the white cabbage butterfly would ecimate the leaves with caterpillars, thousands of them. From Germany
@salpine
@salpine 18 дней назад
I went out every 2-3 days and inspected the leaves for yellow eggs and removed them. Prevented a lot of them just from that. I would check for worms and pinch them off. I found growing nasturtium right next to these crops really seemed to help. You can use a net but still check that under the net. There’s a spray called BT spray that is harmless to us but shuts down worm digestion if they start to eat the leaves. It really minimizes the damage. It’s really about being diligent and checking them. If they are neglected that’s when the cabbage worm takes over.

This year on my plots has been a nightmare!. A grow in the northwest of England, we,very had drought now drowning. We are now overrun with slugs and snails and catapillars, beetroot haven't grown, turnips plug plants eaten, a few beans are now growing after the third sowing. And we now have blight on the plots. I grow the no big way and spread about 3 tons of home made compost on plots. But this year has left me speechless. We have our annual veg show in two weeks, and we're wondering if anyone will have anything to show?. Very envious of your success in grows clean and beautiful veg. I seem to remember you published a book, is it still avaliable? And how much? And how do I get one. Cheers .

I am not familiar with ANY of the of the three leafy greens you mentioned: But the first eludes me. Is the LATIN "Plutonia" or was it "Flutonia"? I assumed that was the Latin, but I can find NAUGHT on any leafy green so named. It seems conclusive that I misheard. Could you please correct me/and or add a list of the plants above, for those of us who are likewise linguistically challenged? Thank you. [Later EDIT] I image searched the plant which followed your words, and it says this is Claytonia perfoliata, commonly known as miner's lettuce, Indian lettuce, or winter purslane, is a flowering plant in the family Montiaceae., which APPARENTLY is a different plant than the "lamb's lettuce" (listed second), as Google says the latter is Valerianella locusta, commonly called mâche or mache; common cornsalad; or lamb's lettuce, is a small, herbaceous, annual flowering plant in the honeysuckle family Caprifoliaceae. I rather assumed the photos was "lamb's lettuce", but it seems that, too, was incorrect. IF anyone (Besides Huw) could educate me, it would be greatly appreciated. Again, thanks.

I've got a question, which someone might know the answer to. Last year I grew yellow French beans. I saved the seed and sowed and planted them this year. Only this year they are purple. As far as I know French beans do not cross pollinate, so I was expecting yellow ones again this year. My neighbour on the plot next to me at my allotment did grow purple ones but the plants were a good 20m apart. Not one of the plants is yellow, they are all purple. Any clues?
@abbycomery4829
@abbycomery4829 Год назад
Likely you planted a hybrid or F1 bean initially Means the next generation isn’t true to type, you get a throw back to one of the ‘parent’ plants that were cross bred to make the hybrid bean
@sharonscott8358
@sharonscott8358 Год назад
@@abbycomery4829 you made a good point, so I checked where I got the seeds from in 2022 and they are open pollinated. However they do say on their website that that particular variety can stay green depending on soil type. I will write to them to see what they say.

What does 'run to seed' mean?
@LittleKikuyu
@LittleKikuyu 2 дня назад
It means the plant starts flowering and then producing seeds. In many plants we want that of course, because we eat the fruit, such as tomatoes or courgettes. However, leafy greens it often means the leaves become tough or change taste and the plant becomes basically inedible for us 😅 I hope that helps 😊

My radishes have been completely wiped out by flea beetle. I’ve put 2 yellow sticky traps which have caught a lot but I should have done more. I don’t understand how you can grow brassica outdoors without net protection from cabbage butterflies. I’ve hundreds trying to get in and they even then they lay thru the netting. I cover everything and don’t have any tunnels but join canes together with plastic bottles then cover with scaffold netting. Last year I covered the carrots with netting but even then caterpillars ate all the tops so now I buy them. 🙄

@lynh.1214 Год назад
What I found works against them is mix sieved wood ash with insecticide powder, and sift a fine layer of it around and ON your plants, early morning while there is still dew on the leaves. No, it doesn't burn them. You can use just the ashes, or ash+fine rock powder as well. You'll have to repeat after every rain, sadly.
