And when Sophia cries out "My baby is gone!" 4 decades later, I still get a tear in my eye. She manages to convey the pure grief of a parent losing their child so perfect.
"My baby is gone!" Those words broke my heart. Brilliant acting. You could see that this woman dug deep to bring us to understand the grief of her character. No one can be taught to do that. It's all pure talent💕

There is absolutely NO WAY 4 women other than these 4 could play those characters🤷🏽. The sarcasms of Dorothy, the femininity of Blanche, the behaviors of only an 80 year old Sophia could get away with & the naiveté of Betty White is what made them the Golden Girls. And no one else could EVER do it better. RIP in the Heavens above ladies & you all will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN👵👱👩👸
The “I get the rose” scene perfectly shows who Rose is as a character. She uses positivity and humor to go through life because she understands that is the only way to overcome the difficult obstacles you may encounter. I always cry watching that scene. Betty did a perfect job acting how Rose wasn’t crazy or dumb, but grieving and needed to move on.

What's your source for that information? It sounds completely scripted b/c they have a whole conversation about it. The 3 of them are not going to improvise an entire scene. And that's not genuine laughter when Bea asked if they fired a herring out of a cannon, so IDK what laughter you are talking about. Nothing seemed spontaneous or unexpected. I think you're probably just repeating an urban legend.
@@DonnaBrooks You can clearly hear and see glimpses of her laughing as Rose talks. In fact there's two moments where she bursts out laughing. Plus, Dorothy asking "Did they ever shoot a herring out of a canon?" could have easily been improvised based off of the story Rose was telling thus far. It's like listening to someone tell a story, then asking them a question about it as they're going on. Though I don't know for sure I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility of it being improvised.
@@DonnaBrooks if you do some research, you'll see that part of the scene was off the script. When Dorothy and blanche laughed, it's called "breaking character." So you're partly right...some of that scene is scripted. But also Rose did improvise the Herring story.
I grew up in a household that consisted of my mom, my grandmother, my sister and me (I'm male). So naturally, we watched this show. And it was the funniest thing I had ever seen. Now, almost 40 years later, it's still my all time favorite sit-com. Thank you for posting this :)
The “Get the Rose” segment just hit me harder than ever, so poignant a moment delivered by the amazing Betty White, making us realize how brilliant an actress she was, capable of such dramatic moments like this, an amazing talent. When some live to that age we accept that they were lucky to have a long life, but oddly with Betty, so active and vibrant, it left us wanting more and at almost 100, saying “gone too soon”.
Hats off for Betty White, for keeping on straight face during The Great Herring War. Bea and Rue were totally broke out the character,and couldn't keep on but laughing.
@@tookitogo That's what I was thinking. That laughter was completely off script. They simply couldn't help themselves and I was right there with them. I've got tears in my eyes just imagining a herring flying out of a cannon. It ranks right up there with the Knights of Nih skit.

I always think this too. Like how she probably was so filled with sadness and knew this scene all too well. 😔 My first thought when she passed was ooh she gets to be with the her husband. So I smiled and was happy for her.

The condoms scene is a big part of why I love Blanche. If people aren't minding their own business as they should be, why should they struggle to be discreet about a perfectly natural thing as being sexually active? She was very self-liberated.

I grew up watching this show with my mother and grandmother and I always loved this scene! Then my mother used it later on. When I was a teen, I had a boyfriend and we were talking about "going all the way." I told my mother cuz I was nervous and wanted advice. We had a sensible conversation. But then I asked my mom to buy the condoms for me at the drugstore. My mother told me that unless I was brave enough to go into the store and announce my need for condoms like Blanche did, then I wasn't mature and brave enough to handle having sex yet. She was right. My BF and I waited a whole year more, and it's good we did.

That was so beautiful and heartfelt. You can tell that Bea broke character and that she REALLY meant it! It makes me laugh at all of the know nothing know-it-alls who think that Bea hated Betty in real life. That wasn't true at ALL. Like sisters, you do sometimes get angry or annoyed with each other, but at the end of the day, you still can love and depend on each other.

Sophia breaking down about her son, Dorothy leaving in the final episode, Rose selling her house talking to her dead husband on her birthday. We tend to forget that this was more than just a comedy.
I hadn't watched the show faithfully when it was 1st on so when it came on Hallmark Channel I finally got to see the last season and that great finale. I'm telling you, when Dorothy started to lose it and called the the girls her angels I was sobbing! What a finish to an unbelievably great show. I'm glad it's on in reruns now so I can catch up with what I missed when it 1st came out.
Sophia's scene where she mourns over the death of her son is powerful. There weren't many scenes where she showed her vulnerability, and this is one of the best. I was weeping right along with her.

It's sort of considered a privilege to get the rose, so it's usually reserved for the guest of honor. I wonder if the writers had that in mind.

The scene with Betty White and her birthday just gives me chills. She was such an incredible actress. To be able to pull off a scene by yourself, imagining it with another person, my god, she was the best. A class act, The most beautiful rose in the room.
These ladies were so ahead of their time! As well broke barriers in the industry, it will be a sad day when Betty White goes. Hopefully, she lives past 100, wonderful job!
I saw an interview with Bea Arthur where she said when she first met the mostly young, male writers, she thought to herself, "I've got food in my refrigerator older than these guys". But she said those young men never ceased to amaze her.
My brother was also different, in his way. He passed away in 2013. Seeing Sophia break down and say "my baby is gone" is like watching my mom all over again on that day. It hit me hard. No parent should have to live to bury their child. This show was great and so ahead of its time. It tackled all sorts of serious topics without ever getting preachy. A lot of the very best 80s and 90s sitcoms had that in common, but few did it better than Golden Girls.
Oh my God, Bea Arthur’s expression on her face when the host of that morning show says today we talk to four lesbians. Then she says “ Rose we can’t kill you here because there are cameras.“ I don’t know who wrote these lines for them but kudos for writing hilarious lines like these

thats what made this show so progressive. Golden Girls talked about social and political issues that many other shows in that time period, were afraid to talk about. I think thats what makes it so timeless because as we progress as a society, the more it becomes relatable. I always thought that the Golden Girls was more than a sitcom from the 80s, it was a blueprint.
That’s so true. I’ve noticed over the years my choice of a favorite character has changed. It’s Dorothy now and if God blesses me a long life it’ll probably be Sophia. ❤
I wish Blanche would have let Dorothy stand up for Blanche’s daughter and tell that boyfriend to go to Hell! Or really Blanche should have said it herself.

Never had an opportunity to see this sitcom (never aired in India), but had heard a lot about it through pop culture references. Thanks for the uploads. It's such a clever show with a sparkling script. The actors are so on point with their timing. That Betty White scene "I get the rose" is just heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measure. I have been watching the Golden Girls since I was 19, now 56, every situation they went through is as relatable today, as it was back then, loved the show 🤗
What I really love about watching the golden girls on RU-vid is the number of older people who actually grew up with the show. I certainly didn't because I'm too young, I'm only 21, so I never waited for the episodes to come out. I only found out about the show 6 years ago when I was watching the amazing world of gumball.
The “You’ll Always Be My Sisters” scene really is a tear jerker. But in lue of the legendary Betty Whites’ passing we can all rejoice as they are all reunited as the golden girls we all knew and grew to love
#10 "I Get the Rose" always makes me cry. My opinion is that she wasn't acting and that she was expressing the very real feeling and sadness of missing her true love Allen Ludden. When she says "Charlie, I love you. I miss you." I can't help but cry. He had passed away on June 9, 1981 and this particular scene aired on December 13, 1986. What warms my heart even through tears is that they are together again. By the way, their Password was love.
I've never seen the 'I get a Rose' moment, truly heartbreaking and heart-warming at the same time. Betty White really is an amazing actresses and golden girls really were something special 🌹

It's not a funny one, but Dorothy confronting the doctor at the restaurant in "Sick and Tired" is KILLER and it makes me choke up every time. It's perfect.

"My Brother, My Father" is one of my all time favorite episodes! Especially when Blanche, dressed as a nun, blurts out "Oh Jesus!" and quickly recovers with "Please protect us and watch over us in this our hour of need". 😂😂😂
Number 5 is my favorite. When I became sexually active when I was 20 I was embarrassed at first but what Blanche said made me realize I have nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of because I’m protecting myself and the other person.

I’ve always thought that the “magenta” segment was so great. Whoever came up with the way of describing that feeling was brilliant. I, honestly, don’t think I’ve ever heard a better description/explanation for that combination of feelings.
My moms favorite scene is the one where Blanche talks about her bosoms singing in the moonlight. Now every time I see that scene I hear my mom saying the line too. 😂
When I tell you I CRIED on that episode when they were buying condoms😂🤣 Especially when the gentleman asks her if she just got out of prison💀 This has to be in the top five funniest moments in TV history. So damn funny this show was.
11:30 I cried like a baby. I'm not gay but I've had so many friends who were afraid to come out. This touched my heart to all my amazing friends ❤ Thank you golden girls for talking out during a prejudice era and not afraid to talk out loud about it.
The best scene though will always be when Sophia and Blanche are competing for the same man (Cesar Romero) and Sophia is about to go out with him. Blanche is trying to show her butt and seduce the man before Sophia leaves and says ‘if you need me I’ll be taking a hot, steamy bath with just enough water to cover my purky bosom’ and Sophia replied ‘So you’re only gonna sit in an inch of water?’ I die every time. Also when Blanche sits down on the couch after Dorothy took Sophia shoe shopping I think and she has the ballon on the metal stick. Blanche sits down and says ‘now your honery, crotchety, and even downright mean, but that’s part of your charm…’ and Sophia replies ‘Thank you, you bedhopping relic.’ And Blanche gets the saltiest look on her face and takes a pin she was holding and pops the balloon. I die because none of the actresses jump or even look when the balloon is popped, not even Blanche who does it while looking at the camera! We all need a little more Sophia and Blanche moments in our lives to help brighten things up. When those two get together in the words of Sophia ‘Fasten your seatbelt slutpuppy!’
I’m 42 now but I loved The Golden Girls growing up. Every summer I would go visit my Great Grandma in Los Angeles and we would always watch together. And play cards.
the audience reactions are priceless ( in every scene) especially in the Lebanese scene it took them a second to get what blanch meant you can hear the roaring laughter 😂
