I enjoy the bagpipes, they match the beautiful scenery. Your attempts at magnet fishing remind me of our first try. Here in Buckhorn the canal looks promising…but finds are scarce. The colours are lovely, we had a beautiful fall display this year, afraid most leaves have fallen now and snow mixed with rain is forecast for tomorrow. Look forward to your videos, keep them coming.

Kate, I also heard that devils lurk in corners. But I'll bet the corners are rounded because there's less chance of them falling in or out if the stones are cruved it seems like they are more sturdy than a sharp corner.

I have watched a few metal detecterist that do rivers and stream edges, also using strainer pans. They always aim for the edge of a curve in the river or stream at often coins get brushed along by stones and gravel with the natural force of the strong water flow. Great colours of Autumn showing on your Island now, that view of the tree boughs all twisting and gnarly look fantastic. Thank you for sharing. 💕🇦🇺

Fabulous autumn colours! I hope you are able to discover the history of the schoolhouse. When I was little I attended an old school in the country and the windows were always high up so the children couldn't look out of them and be distracted from their lessons. We had a stove in the middle of the classroom with a cage round it and in winter we sat round it and fell asleep after lunch.

The reason the corners are curved it’s because the arch is the strongest form of architectural structure. Bridges, doors and domes all are part of the geometric shape of the circle that is resting on itself. In order to resist the pressure exerted upon it the majority of the castles have turrets that resemble a circle or half of a circle. It makes them indestructible. Simple

Love the pipes. The stone work in these old buildings.Can anyone do that type of work anymore? And the thatch what was that made of?
@TheScottishIsle
@TheScottishIsle 11 месяцев назад
Yes, there are stonemasons who're trained to do that kind of walling. I think perhaps there's more call for them to build boundary walls these days if they're working from scratch, instead of entire houses. But they do repair and rebuild old stone houses. And thatch would have been dependent on the environment at hand; some used heather, some straw, some reed, even sods of turf. Kx

No mason, so this are my guesses. Those rounded corners needs less material than a sharp corner. Also you don't need to source stones suited (two vertical sides in 90 degrees) for corners. Less work is often the reason why things are done in certain ways.

In some ways I find it quite sad to see all the crumbling houses & walls that someone in the past spent an awful lot of time & energy creating. It wasn’t just building them & the energy that took, but the enormous amount of time they must have spent gathering all the stone together in one place.

Those buildings over on the mainland are owned by a neighbour, so probably not. But, we've got lots of wood if we did want to embark on a project like that on the island. I think this year we'll concentrate on the house and smallholding, then think about fun projects like that later. Kx
