We run this play against an aggressive person-to-person defense. It also works especially well if your team is quick and undersized. There is so much activity on the offensive end, with multiple on ball and off ball screens that it's difficult for the defense to keep up.
Communication is key to having a successful basketball team. I'll take a team that communicates well with average talent over a team of superstars that can't talk to each other. Most offensive basketball plays are designed to force communication by the opposing defense in order to stop it.
Even the simple pick and roll requires good communication. Do I go under or over the screen? Are we switching on a screen? What if I get stuck behind a screen. Any play that can force communication by the defense has a greater potential for success if the defense fails to talk to each other.
I especially enjoyed calling this play when I had a great point guard who could come off the top screen with speed and finish strong at the basket.
I hope you find this video helpful. Please subscribe to my channel and leave me a question or comment below. Thank you!
This offensive play against a 2-3 zone is great for teaching youth, club teams, junior high, high school, and recreational teams.
If you have recorded video of your team executing this play or any of the plays you've learned from my channel and would like for me to do a RU-vid video review of your team executing the play, please email me at

totally seems to be the best tutorial set of plays I have experienced yet wow this would make a point guard become more savvy and raise on the ball IQ just learning this one play could allow the offense set to play a 2 game series without any issues other than to repeatedly use the play and look for all options

Great play. I used this as one of my set plays last year and had a lot of success. The options make it awesome. I also used this tutorial as review and homework with my team. They loved it.

Split the post! I tried this with my rec team one season, but it would only be good for the first 2-3 options. Granted, they were 5th grade and we practiced once a week for 1 hour. I made it a little more interesting by incorporating pop-culture. We called it "The Migos"--and option one, the back door cut by the 3 was "Take Off"--other options were of course Quavo, Honcho and Offset. Made it more fun but we needed more practice.

Hi Russ! One thing you ignored in this video is the very first pass to your pointguard. We've been running this play for 3 seasons now and we often notice that after the first pick our pointguard is open underneath the basket so for us that's the very first option. You'd be surprised how much this option actually works, especially in female basketball that I coach. Just a piece of advice, if it may help. Thanx for the video!

Hey Farmville, We actually run two different variations of this play. One (which is in the video) with a guard-to-wing entry, and the other with a guard-to-high post entry. I teach the second variation after my team is comfortable with this initial play. Generally speaking, whenever a team takes away something defensively, they usually give something else up. In this case, It's almost always a backdoor pass or a if they're cheating under the high post screens, you'll have some open shots!

its really nice set play , keeping big man up free throw line so you can clear and save under the basket from shot blockers , it would be great if in the last stugger cut you put 4 in place of 5 and that player on position 4 is a good shooter , that will give him a great isolation for a wide open 3 point shoot

Yeah, we use that offense against a 1-3-1 but make some adjustments with our high and low posts. We still have a 2 guard top and a shooter on one side in the corner.

We run a motion or flex offense against a man. Sometimes we just run a "non" offense where we our players just spread the defense and try to beat their man off the dribble. We usually get a layup or a drive and dish for an open shot or layup.

good play, i've actually seen this before and used it in games, i prefer a direct screen on nr 2 after the backflip, it's like option 4(i think) except more quick and it will catch the offense offguard if the screener gets a screen. the spanish national team use this and it's called Cross. (there a cross when 1 and 2 cuts the first cuts)

I'm going to give this to my coach. We just had a buzzer beater win it was awesome. Out point guard fumbled the ball by the side. It nearly went out. He picked it up. Fade away. Buzzer beater (2 seconds left). 3 pointer. Jump shot. Might I say that he's only in grade 9. And then there's me just chilling as number 2. I'm good at bball just the whole team thing doesn't work for me. Like I love playing one on one and 3vs3. Idk I guess I suck.

Hey coach, In my opinion, any defensive strategy is strongly influenced by the talents of your players. Pressing requires strong man defensive/containment/trapping skills but is almost useless unless you have other players with great anticipation. I sometimes feel some of my players should be able to anticipate or read passes to intercept, but I've learned to recognize more my players own skill above my own expectations of what they should be able to do. Good luck coach!

Great series of plays against the various defensive sets. Do you have an offensive play against a 1-3-1 defense? Your triangle with some adjustments may also do the trick.
@CoachRuss
@CoachRuss 12 лет назад
It depends, it could be used several times throughout a game so long as you continue to find success with it against a man-to-man defense. If you find yourself running it all the way through without success or any open looks besides an outside shot, I'd stop running the play. Good luck!

This is a great play or offense but just about everything about it needs to be changed. Having everybody start above the free throw line puts just about everybody out of position to run past the centers screen. Of course I use this offense and combine it with a simple offense that can be used to attack most zone Defenses but will work on a limited bases against Man to Man. This combining of two offenses gets better spacing and allows for less game time coaching, letting the players decide which half of the offense is appropriate.

Any ideas of any varations for the "5" in this offense? We call it fuzzbuster because it picks the fuzz off the cutters, but the 5 does not get a lot of movement/opportunity. I have a big man who can also move well, so tjoughts are appreciated.

Hello Sir! i am a Junior league head coach for 5th and 6th grade Boys. I loved your 2-3 Set Play Offense. I am using it right now and the kids like it too. One question though - how do I make use of the Player # 4 position at the high Post? he does have a crucial screen role, but i would like to use him more. Should i use him for any changes in Defense situation where he can receive a pass if he is open? Thank you.
@CoachRuss
@CoachRuss 7 лет назад
Hello Ananth. Thank you for the comment and complement. I'm glad that you and your team enjoy running this play. It really is fun to execute in a real game situation isn't it? Regarding your question about the #4 player; he does have 2 initial and a final screen to set in this play if it is run all the way through. If you are thinking about how to get him more involved, you should have him call for the ball at the high post (when he is not screening). This will accomplish three things. (1) It will keep his defender closer to him, (2) it will make his defender less available to help on the ball, and (3) it will give your other players an outlet should the play breakdown at any point. Best of luck to you and your team!

@CoachRuss
@CoachRuss 7 лет назад
Do you mean the last option looking for an open shot at the top of the key? I've not seen a defender cheat around two screens like that very often. If it were my team, I would have my guard with the ball just hold onto it and go into our offense. This play isn't an "everytime" down the court offense. I hope that helps. Thanks for your input.
