The objects sticking out at an angle on the left side are either vacuum or sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) switches that actually break the circuit before the blades start to open. Apparently the load breaking switches failed, allowing the blades to open "hot" (still energized), thus pulling the arc as they swing to the open position. The arc flashes to an adjacent phase and trips an upstream breaker, extinguishing the arcs.

didnt know they use sulfur hexafluoride for that? are those SF6 switches ever field-serviced, or would complete new & sealed units be put in place?

Those are Joslyn vacuum interrupters on that switch. At that voltage they are supposed to be used for line dropping not interrupting load.

@zarrow50

So what is happening?
@teknikrota
@teknikrota 6 лет назад
Clive Ellis If you open the switch on energized and under load,it making arc. It's normal but wrong. Must before open breaker,after open switch. Switches can't break the line under load. If open under load,as you can see It making arc...
@msmoonbeam91
@msmoonbeam91 6 лет назад
WHY are they doing it and does it cause a power failure somewhere?
@ToothyGus
@ToothyGus 5 лет назад
@@msmoonbeam91 This is a switch just like a light switch in your home. But because of the high voltage the switch has to be large and the positive and negative terminals have to be very far apart otherwise electricity just jumps across even if the switch is off. They are switching it off in this video but because of electrical load in the network, electricity does not want to 'turn off' so it makes an arc that you can see. makes sense?
@blakebeverly84
@blakebeverly84 4 года назад
ToothyGus Terrible analogy. There is no negative in A/C. Just like there’s no negative in your house and especially at your light switches.

That is what happens when the vacuum interrupter unit does not clear the way it should. All seven of the vacuum interrupters in each unit must open within a few milliseconds of each other. That did not happen here along with this impressive result.

Interesting that the smaller arms of the switch were pulled toward the other side while it was arcing. As soon as the arc broke they fall back.

The circuit interuption device failed allowing the 3 phase switch assembly to open under load then two of the arcs connected tripping an upstream circit breaker. Believe it or not this was mild compared to some arc faults. Seen some that were blundingly bright with dripping molten metal like a welders arc on steroids frying bits of the substation. The worst case is an arc fault that starts in the power factor correction capacitor bank that continues tll the power transformer overheats and explodes.
@stuartschnare152
@stuartschnare152 3 года назад
Looked from this angle like the arc lasted too long and resulted in a phase to phase fault?

@dtiydr
@dtiydr 2 года назад
Yes but these arcs should never exist in the first place since there are special breakers inside them that break the electricity before these blades are opened so there will not be any arcs. Those breakers are special in that way that no arcs can form inside them.

This is NOT how a high voltage switch is supposed to work. Interrupter Bottle failure, probably exceeding its rating by trying to break load or excess loop current. See Joslyn Load Interrupter Attachments.

Yes, one of the arcs jumped across to it's neighbor causing a phase-to-phase short and upstream circuit protection tripped out on fault.
