Forging grip rail for the railing and the frank power hammer broke! A pipe had work hardened and cracked. Upon trying to remove it, the pipe tore and a part of it was still inside the air cylinder. Craig had some large screw extractor and popped it out. Repair the issue and back to work! Keep it dirty ;)

I suggest getting rid of all the pipe fittings between the hose barb and the cylinder. It is probably all that weight hanging there vibrating that is the root of you problem. Hopefully that will keep it from breaking?
@manmachinemake3708
@manmachinemake3708 5 лет назад
Exactly ! Get rid of all that piping hanging off the cylinder and plumb those hoses right to 'em. You will benefit from increased volume as well. Also, the rear cylinder is moving a bit when the hammer is going, tho it was the front that broke.

@@manmachinemake3708 Or at least use a sweep bend and adequate support.

That's some groovy tuneage you got going on in your video. EZ-outs to the rescue! Again and again. Hahaha. Good to see the issue wasn't overly devastating and time consuming.

I agree with comments about shortening the length of fittings sticking out from the cylinder. It's a diving board just asking to vibrate. Thread the barb right into the cylinder if you can, or I bet it'll break again in the same spot.

You could replace the piece that keeps breaking with a hex bushing and a quick connect (standard on any air hose) and a spiral flex line.

If those were schedule 40 pipe nipples from the corner hardware store, they will break very frequently. Look for Schedule 80 or even Schedule 160 threaded nipples at an industrial supply and the wall thickness will increase without changing the outer diameter of the nipple. This will give you a lot more meat to absorb the stresses the vibrating and pressure cycling the power hammer creates. It will also withstand the erosion/corrosion caused by any excess moisture in your compressed air quite a while longer than the thin stuff from the hardware store.

You ought to put the brass nipple straight into the ram. Lessen the mass hanging out there. Less mass less fatigue

It's like an easy-out, just on a much larger scale than what I've done. Although, looks like it's just as much of a pain to get started. :-)

That a handrail for an hefalump? Man... That got to be the heaviest piece for whatever job you're doing. That's MAD overkill.. 😂

Is black pipe the best option? Would bronze pipe take the vibration better? I know copper would work harden and break...

if its constantly breaking at that nipple joint.. can you get rid of the pipe nipple and elbow? just thread the pipe threaded barbed fitting right into the cylinder?
@northernnorm65

Thats what i was thinking longer hose with the barb nipple direct in get rid if that dangling extra mass out there

Or possibly use schedule 80 nipples.

Ha ha 4:18 you said "over torquing a male part" ;) Question, why is cylinder mounted upside down, does it add to mass of the ram that way? I mean I know it does but is that the reason? Tanks!
@Dirtysmith
@Dirtysmith 5 лет назад
pushing the ram vs pulling...hummm
@mikenewman4078
@mikenewman4078 4 года назад
I noticed that too. Force equals pressure multiplied by area. If the rod end is sized to adequately lift the hammer slug then the larger area of the head end will provide a larger striking force. Cylinder mounted dump valves will also increase velocity of the hammer.

Those work ok but I usually forge the size I need in a 2 or 3 step flute (taper)
@Zogg1281
@Zogg1281 4 года назад
Umm, why do you have your power hammer set up so far from your forge? It just means that the whole time that you're walking your piece of metal is cooling down.
