In todays video I take the first steps and over view of restoring this Hammarlund HQ 140-X. We soon see there are many problems with the IF stage, crystal selectivity and AVC. Going to take a lot of troubleshooting and multiple videos with this one.

It is all about observation of the current faults before any work is done,then careful documentation before and after fault correction,very sound approach IMHO,regards Colin.

Nice job! UGH, smokers ! I can just see some guy hunched over his desk, yellow fingers holding the ever present cig, smoke drifting into his eyes as he tunes in late night DX. I knew someone like that, he stunk so bad you had to stand 5 feet or more away to talk to him. GREAT person but the smoke smell UGH. Mr Carlson did a video on this same radio a while ago, it is nice to see different problems and yet you work through them much the same way. The Analizer is the best way to do the alignment. I have yet to do one but I do understand why it needs to be done that way!

The varible capacitors in these hq 140s 129s etc are superb works of art and precision crafted . very fine varible capacitors. dont find that any more. clean up jobs can take lot of time dials chassis etc . labor of love, takes long time. I have restored 2 of the HQ 129s long ago had a HQ 140 as well superb AM receivers and cant beat AM broad cast band DX either way better than some new junk they make these days. thanks for video radio shop . Apparently I lucked out on a RCA Chanalyst II that was owned by a non smoker. It just smells of vintage 1940. Four eye tubes and all working, ahhh! Seems the HQ- 140-X needs your magic touch Buddy.

A really nice radio. I have a number of observations, recommendations, suggestions, etc. First, mostly for in the future because I suspect that you are done with this one now, I would like to suggest that you give "Odo-Ban" a try for cleaning off the tar from cigarettes. First of all, it is a very good cleaner. It is also a disinfectant, and does an excellent job of eliminating odors! I noticed that this radio uses the infamous "death caps" across the line to ground (both hot and neutral sides to ground.) Really should be replaced with Safety Caps (Y type) if they are not already. The green disc capacitors. Are they Ceramic Disc capacitors? If so, and they are being used for coupling from stage to stage, I highly recommend that you change them out for a different type capacitor. Ceramic disc caps are microphonic...and can generate noise on the line, also they tend to change value considerably with temperature. I may not be explaining this well enough, but it is shown wonderfully in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-67M7fsbLUIU.html Wow! You just got to the point where you were turning the XTAL selector knob and man were the patterns lousy!!! Bet you will make them look beautiful when you adjust it. I guess this is going to be a multi part video. Looking forward to the other ones soon.

What a beautiful receiver. The way through spectrum analyzer is super cool, a jump ahead from traditional “peeks”👍. I’m curious to see what’s wrong with it.

Great video Buddy. I have the same spectrum analyzer and would love to use it on old radios. Can you elaborate on the "boxes" you are using to impedance match and protect your Rigol Spectrum analyzer? Mr. Carlson has a vid on it but it is for 75 ohms and many requested he help them with this problem. It is a great tool but too expensive to blow the front end just trying things at random. Thanks Doc.

Great job cleaning up those dials! The dials in my Hammarlund HQ-120-X are in good condition but are slightly warped causing some rubbing along the edges. How can I fix that problem without distorting them?

Savogran Trisodium Phosphate (also known as TSP) will work to remove tough stains and is an effective de-greaser against cigarette tar. Just a small amount mixed in water goes a long way. But test on metal I don't want anyone mad at me.

Can you tell me how to make the isolation boxes, I have the same spectrum analyzer, but I need to build a box to isolate the high voltage in the radio to the spectrum analyzer. I don't want to hook my spectrum analyzer directly as it is limited to 50v input. my Ham call is WB7QXU good on QRZ

The residue from the cigarette smoke (tar) will collect on the coolest parts of the radio. Therefore, the upper part of the front panel and the dial discs are the worst.
@bblod4896

Is the left tuning dial cleaner than the right tuning dial, or perhaps it's just the light? Vertical dipole antennas, LOL. Guess you will be throwing rocks over the trees again to get the antenna right. Thanks for the look and have a good Sunday. Edited: Well you answered the question.
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 4 года назад
The front windows are heavily stained. Would not come clean like the dials. Yellow tint to them. The dipoles are on a pully. Easy peasy :)

Regarding the nicotine: It's actually tar. It can be cleaned easily with Windex (e.g.; spray on paper towel/etc. and then wipe),

Nice work Buddy...what are you using inside your two interface boxes to couple the TG and SA into/out of the circuits?
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 4 года назад
Hi Dino. It is a string of capacitors, .01 followed by 8 100 puff caps in series. Also a series of forward and reversed diodes to protect it. The tracking gen box has a 50 ohm resistor on the TG side. Paul did a video on that quite some time ago. These are replicas of his. Thanks for the comment my friend. Pauls video below...

Another great video, thanks for putting these up for our education and enjoyment! I was wondering what's inside the black boxes that you used to connect the tracking generator and spectrum analyzer input to the radio. I assume they're to protect the test equipment from DC and impedance match the 50 ohm coax to the balanced input for the radio? You don't happen to have schematics for those that are shareable do you? Big thumbs up on these videos!

@@TheRadioShop That would do it! I love Paul's videos as well. You both create fantastic content. Paul's boxes were designed for 1M ohm input spectrum analyzers. Did you adjust the design for the 50 ohm input on your Rigol? I have a Siglent that's also a 50 ohm input.. Thanks so much for all the help! I really appreciate it given how much time it has to take..
