Hi friends! This week we’re in Death Valley National Park embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Due to recent weather, the ancient Lake Manly has reappeared at Badwater Basin and the National Park Service is allowing visitors to kayak on the shallow waters! After hearing this, Nate & I immediately put in an Amazon order for 2 inflatable kayaks, and the next day we were on the road to Death Valley! Join us as we set out on an adventure unlike any other as we paddle across the lowest spot in North America.
🚨 3/6/24 UPDATE 🚨: Since the posting of this video, extremely windy weather has moved the historic Lake Manly across the valley floor and reduced the water depth. The National Park Service is no longer allowing visitors to use kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.
In late August of 2023, the remnants of Hurricane Hilary ripped across California, hitting Death Valley and the surrounding regions particularly hard. Setting the record for the wettest day, the national park received over 2 inches of rain during the storm, which is more precipitation than it typically receives in an entire year! This resulted in major flooding throughout the park, and Lake Manly reappeared over Badwater Basin. This ancient body of water once covered this region, stretching nearly 100 miles long and 600 feet deep...but it’s been long dry now for thousands of years, with the exception of rare seasonal flooding, like right now.
Earlier this month (Feb 2024), Death Valley got slammed with another storm, and it nearly doubled in size since the park reopened last October from the damage sustained due to Hurricane Hilary. This temporary lake now covers 6 miles long and 3 miles wide, and there’s a channel of water covering what used to be a walking path, which extends all the way to the short boardwalk at the parking lot! Although it’s covering an enormous area, the depth is only about 2.5-3 feet at its deepest point. Park officials estimate the waters here will lessen substantially over the next couple months and completely dry up by the hot Summer season.

I would be out there if I could. Kayaking in less than three feet of water sounds hilarious and the footage of the lake is gorgeous!!!

Absolutely gorgeous and stunning. Thanks for sharing the video. Quick question, were they imposing for doing the inspection of the kayaking before jumping into the water? as this is National Park, were you able to use drone photography?

The rangers were great (I love our Death Valley Rangers & they always share such helpful information) and as far as drones go please watch this video at the 8:19 mark when I share the camera I’m using here. Drones are not allowed in Death Valley & I am always sad to see people flying them here. My footage in this video is captured with a Insta360 handheld camera not a drone (drone pilots can tell that this isn’t drone footage but to the untrained eye the 360 degree camera almost gives a similar view) as I state in my video drones are strictly prohibited in our national parks (I’m grateful for that because they can really disturb the local wildlife). Insta360 camera has very good stabilization & you can use the extendable tripod to hold the camera higher than your head, so when you raise the camera and move with it, it gives almost a “flying” effect. I don’t mean to gush about this camera but as someone who has no intrest in flying drones I love the footage I’m able to capture with it - and it’s very compact, it’s smaller than my iPhone and fits in my pocket!🙌 (links and info on the Insta360 camera are included in the caption below my video)

It’s so incredible that the water is high enough that the park rangers are allowing kayaking out on the water right now, I definitely hope you’re able to make it out on the water for yourself!🙌

Visit Shoreline Butte to see the ancient beach terraces . there's at least 20 visible terraces on the Butte.

Can you touch the bottom with your paddle?
@flyingdawnmarie
@flyingdawnmarie 6 месяцев назад
Yes, if you watch this video at the 8:40 mark I’m actually touching my paddle to the ground. We kayaked 4 miles and the water was never deeper than 3 feet.
