In this lesson, students learned the importance of Common Shareholder's equity and Preferred Shareholder's par value. In order to properly assess the value of a common shareholder's equity we must always remember to subtract the par value of the preferred stock. Although this might be a painful process for new investors, it's importance is paramount. If an individual is interested in investing in such a company, you would need to assess this "correct book value" for previous periods in order to reasonably assess the common share holder's equity growth in a business.

Hey Preston, these videos are great, super easy to understand. No where have I found content this good so thanks a million for putting these videos together. Quick question does the same apply to warrants and anything alike when doing deductions to work out the price of common shares?

Okay, on MSN the preferred stock is now listed on same chart but under a heading of Capital stock. You have to click that to pop out the preferred stock. Here's my question: On JNJ they have a Capital stock figure but when you click on it, you find that money isn't for preferred stock... it is for common stock. Should that be subtracted also from Equity?

Is there also a bond equity? Do you then have to get the common/preferred amount off the total equity to get to know that?

hi preston thanks for your educational videos but i have question now: from now on if i observe a company that issues preferred shares then my book value would be different than it is calculated in those websites which implies that i have to calculate EPS also manually from the financial statement by my self in order to get the accurate data for each year?! am i right? sincerely

Shares outstanding is in millions (or billions). The company doesn't actually have 303 shares outstanding lol.
