I have tried this with hand weights and have discovered that it seems to reinforce the correct form: elbows down, using the waist to get momentum to lift the weight. When the exercises are done correctly there isn't a feeling of weight on the hands, although they are being lifted and pushed.
Great video. I really like the repeating patterns. Though, I was curious what style of Taijiquan this is? If this is true Yang style Taijiquan I would say that what you mentioned at 3:29 regarding the space between the stance is not right. The Bow and Arrow stance should pretty much be inline from toe to toe or rear heel to front toe with the rear and front toes at 45 degrees...? The stance as you show it looks like a modification to allow older (65 - 80's) folks to perform the form.
