24 New Caran Dache Luminance Colors
This is not really a review but more of an update video. Before Derwent released the Lightfast pencils, the Caran d'Ache Luminance pencil didn't really have a competitor, the Faber Castell Polychromos is of course an outstanding pencil but it is not really the same pencil as the Luminance. Along came the Derwent Lightfast and when they announced their 100 set, Caran d'Ache had to do something, and do something they did.
Caran d'Ache have released 24 new colors in the Luminance range bringing the total Luminance palette to 100 making the competition neck and neck. However, I personally don't really see both sets as competition, I prefer to look at this as a wonderful time to be a colored pencil artist. We now have 200 amazing pigments that sport fantastic lightfast ratings to chose from. With the inclusion of 120 Faber Castell Polychromos pigments that is such a wonderfull collection of pencils to chose from when sitting down at your easel or desk to create your next masterpiece.
I have of course reviewed the Luminance pencil individual quite a while ago so if you would like to know more about the actual pencil I have provided links below. Same with the Derwent Lightfast pencils and I have also completed a direct comparison review of the Luminance and Lightfast, links posted below.
To see close up images of all the color charts I have provided in this video, you can check out the written review where you will be able to click on the image to enlarge it and inspect it at your leisure.

Hey Harry, most of those names are based on the pigments used in them. Anyone who does watercolour would be very familiar with the names already.

Any kind of paint, starting with student grade are using colornames according to pigments used in the formula. I really love that they used those professional names, unlike cheap brands who name their colors "Papaya whip cream" or some weird stuff.

I’ve just ordered the wood box set of 100 Derwent Lightfast and the 24 new colours of Luminance. I already have the wood box of Luminance and Pablo (120 colours) and the 120 Polychromos. They are all lighfast, even though at the same level as Luminance and Lightfast. I mix and match them all to get THE PERFECT colour I am looking for. They are fabulous pencils, all of them. Sometimes the colours look similar alone but when we begin to layer them over other colours the outcome is not the same. I am a colour obsessed person so the more colours I have the better. These new Caran d’Ache colours are divine! I can’t wait to receive them along with the Derwent wood box. 🤩

Chris I have 1000 pencils, Polychromos, Prisma Premier, Derwent Drawing and some on reserve 😍 But I did not frame my artwork and archive it in a drawer. But now I want to sell my work. Do you have experience with Lightfastness of Polychromos? Allegedly have highest lightfastness but in tests it is shown that they fade. Do you know if the Lightfastness of Luminance and Derwent Lightfast is better?

For the curious ones, here are the origins of some of the colour names: Anthraquinone Carmine - named after dye group/compound group and also references insect derived pigment carmine Quinacridone Purple - named after pigment group Hibiscus Pink - named after flowering plant Herculanum Red - named after Herculaneum, ancient town near Pompeii, which suffered similar fate; never seen this used to describe a colour before! Carmine Lake - named after insect derived pigment Indanthrone Blue - named after organic dye Blue De Nîmes - named after type of blue the French city of Nimes was known for Chrysocolla Blue - named after a green/blue copper mineral Middle Verdigris - named after green patina that tends to appear on copper, basically corrosion

Thank you for the video! And Thank you for saving me a lot of money too! I had planned to get these extra pencils as soon as I heard Caran D’Ache was planning to release new Luminance colours. But when I see how you compared them to the colours in the old set I realise there is not one if them I really need, perhaps apart from the dark indigo. I feels like they just put out these. colours only to make the range up to a hundred not to give us 24 brand new and different colours to work with. It is in a way the same w Derwment lightfast , their dark greens are so similar it is hopeless to tell them apart. I get really annoyed at companies that just for the sake of selling puts almost identical colours and hues in pencils and call them by different names just to get us to buy all the pencils in the range so we have ” the set”, when in reality one could have the same colour range with fewer penicils and save quite a lot- because these pencils are expensive!

Hi Bridget I did a video a while ago comparing them both abs showing the results and talking about just how well both pencils perform with each other bit.ly/2NihcOX. I’m often ask which pencil I think is the best of them both but I personally don’t actually see it as a simple choice one or the other. They are both beautiful pencils and their palettes are very different also, which as far as I am concerned, for any Colored pencil artist creating commissions or art for Galleries, having both sets in your arsenal, 200 highly lightfast pencils with exquisite palettes you can’t go wrong.

Great review. No worries about the names. I just use the first 5 or so letters. Thats how it was presented with ever art teach I've ever had (lol). Interesting how the colors are so similar to what they already had. I guess if one did a lot of portrait art, the $$ could be justified. So you say Derwent has colorfast comparable to Luminance? I'll have to look in to that. Looking for a light fast wax colored pencil alternative to Prismacolor that won't break the bank. I use Polychromos for oil based (love them)

Thank you so much for your wonderful comment and support. I mentioned to a few others about showing the new colors beside existing colors. the reason I done it was because I knew that people in the US, Australia, Canada and a few other countries would not be getting their sets too soon as you say because of Covid-19. I wanted to show that particular comparison to really say to people, the new colors are gorgeous, but if you already have the Luminance set you are going to have colors very close to them. I just hate the thought of people having to wait for something they are dead excited about but have to wait longer than a lot of other people. I hate it when that happens to me and so I try to cushion the blow for those who watch my reviews. Any way thank you so much.

I know May you are so right, so many people have said the same thing which was the reason I did the comparison chart to current colors. There are one or two colors that are perfect like the Indigo which is the best indigo I’ve ever used. However why they aimed the new colors toward portraiture I’ll never know because the pigments in the current 76 range were by far the best pencils for portraiture given all the Siennas, Ochres and Raw Umbers in the set. I think if they had aimed it toward Botanical they would have had more scope for better pigments. I know pinks etc are not very Lightfast but I am sure they could have worked something out. But as is always the case, I still love them, you can never ever have too many pencils in the mind of a colored pencil enthusiast like us and so we just buy them regardless 😂😂 Thank you so so much May for your wonderful comment, I love seeing your comments and your channel is amazing, as well as your Instagram account, your art is gorgeous May.

Hi emily I’ve never done any lightfast testing myself only because I live in the North East of England were we don’t get much sun at all. Yeah that was the thing that threw me a bit, I’ve reviewed over 250 products and I’ve never reviewed a set of anything that has had all these technical names. I am definitely no watercolour artist but I have a few watercolour sets, Daniel Smith, Winsor and Newton, White Nights and I think of the 5 watercolour sets only one of the pans has the name of the pencils. So to find that they had lumped them all into one set, with none in the 76 set and it is portrait set really threw me. I think had the set have been aimed at botanical or landscape I could understand it a bit more. I personally think what has happened is that the colors in this new 24 batch with the exception of 3 I think are so so similar to other colors in the 76 set, that CD have added these fancy names on the pigments in the hope that we all do exactly what we have done which is buy them. The amount of people that I have had thanking me for adding the comparison is unbelievable and I only done that test because I felt it interesting to see how new the new colors were. I did it with the Lightfast and ProColour when they came out, I compared the colors in those sets with the Artist, ColourSoft etc sets. Thank you so much for your wonderful comment Nerllybird and thank you so much for watching the video.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment. When I was doing the review I just thought about how many colors in the new set were similar to the old set, I think my train of thought behind that part of the review was to show people that if they already had the Luminance set there was no rush in getting the new colors. As beautiful as the new colors I wanted to try and show those who maybe can't afford to get a set straight away that there is nothing to worry about. Thing is, as much as I love doing my reviews, I know what it is like to want something and not afford to get it and I know some people will feel that way watching my reviews. But I don't want them to feel that way and put themselves into financial difficulty to get or to feel bad because they can't get the product I am reviewing. There are times when I wish I was a millionaire cause I would buy all of my subscribers the largest set of the pencils they most want. I get young teenagers contacting me and asking me what pencils they can get that are really cheap and good quality because they don't have the money to get pencils. When I get these types of emails all I want to do is send a set of pencils to them. Anyway thank you so much for your wonderful comment and for your support.

I am not sure about the date which they will be available in the US I think most of the delay is simply due to COVID-19 otherwise I am sure big stores such as Jerry’s, Blicks and Michael’s would have had them by now. As for the 100 set Caran dAche they are not releasing that information yet, Caran dAche always hold their cards close to their chest. I think if they are going to release a wooden box set of 100 it will be in time for Christmas.

As for the similar colours I think it might be like with watercolours - sometimes very similar colours mix into something radically different when blended with other colours. I remember wondering why they put Natural Sienna Lighty (PY43) and Nickel Azo Yellow (Py150) into the same set while they are so similar - but when I made a mixing chart, it turned out that Natural Sienna turned everything into soft pastels, whereas Nickel Azo Yellow mixed like a normal yellow.

Hi Ariel, I know what you mean, I always thought the current 76 Luminance with all the Ochres, Umbers and Siennas had all portrait colors covered and the new flesh tones in the set are not wildly different to the current range of colors. A lot of people have mentioned the lack of light pinks for example and I know that not every one is going to get what they want. The companies making these sets can't please everyone, they only have a limited range to work with. However, I think the fact Heather Rooney is one of the Caran d'Ache Ambassadors and she is also one of the finest colored pencil portrait artists in the world has something to do with the palette. But why they made 20 plus 4 pencils instead of 24 pencils in one set ?
@TheArtGearGuide
@TheArtGearGuide 4 года назад
I think they did it this way because in the luminance range they don’t have sets of 24, 36, 48 , 72 etc, traditional sizes so to speak, they do 12, 20, 40, 76 and hopefully some time soon a straight up 100 set. But I think they wanted to keep everything in line with pre-existing set format, in actual fact I think the spare 4 pencils are quite telling in so much as I think they will have to provide a 100 set otherwise there. Would always be 4 spare colors floating about.

@@TheArtGearGuide that makes sense, yeah. what about a comparison of the two with regards to ease of use on different types of paper? like, how well they lay down and layer on vellum, sanded, watercolor (cold & hot press), mixed media, etc, and even on toned tan/gray/blue/black? or maybe a pros/cons of each, and maybe even do a piece! Hi, thank for your great reviews. I have the new 24 colors, but the Indian Yellow 523 is a bit scratchy, if you look at the point it has brown speckles. I have a few friends that have the same issue. Do you know why that is maybe?
@TheArtGearGuide
@TheArtGearGuide 4 года назад
Hi Elly My Indian Yellow is exactly the same, I am afraid this speckled consistency is part and parcel of the ingredients and pigments used to create the pigment today. Indian Yellow is a really rich pigment and was originally sourced in Indian from Cattle Urine but they fed the cattle Mango leaves which I think in the 1900s the practice was stopped as it was seen to be cruel to the cattle, the Mango leaves caused issues with the cattle. Needless to say this is not how they source Indian Yellow today but there are a lot of different euxanthic acid salts in the mixture and the salt used is not like the salt we use but in a more Chemistry term from what I believe. But there are other chemical particles used to create Indian Yellow and for some reason in a hardened form like colored pencil or pastel there can be this gritty scratchy texture. I don't think the same is true for the pigment in oil, acrylic or watercolor pigments, but I am much less sure about these mediums than colored pencil and pastels. Its Like the Cassel pigment in the Caran d'Ache Luminance set, it is a very dry scratchy pigment and that is because it is made from a lot of particle natural type ingredients. I am sure other people more up on the chemical compounds of pigments would be able to explain it better, but in short, this is quite normal for Indian Yellow in a solid form. I hope this has helped you a bit, I know it is a bit long winded. Thank you so much for your question and for your wonderful support I really appreciate it.

These are high-end artist grade colors, so its very welcomed that they named the colors accordingly. The names are based on pigments and are very normal in to see on paints. Hi Candice as Bluebell says, the Lightfast are not quite as soft, I did a comparison between the two pencils bit.ly/2NihcOX. I was actually thinking about this very question this morning. If you have every used oil pastels or watch someone use them, I thing the Lightfast are a bit like that. If you add lots of layers or just apply one heavy thick application, the Lightfast look and feel a little bit like oil pastels rich and creamy. The Luminance however are slightly softer and when layering or applying a heavy application the texture is drier than the Lightfast if you understand what I mean. Take a look at the video as it might help you a bit and see a little bit of art work done with both pencils

The CI number is so much more than just the pigment number, it is a list of all the pigments that have been blended in order to produce the final pigment. So the Foliage color for example 5 CI reference numbers to make up the foliage color PW6 = Pigment White 6 = the particular colorant of white used. So the total CI numbers for Foliage are PW6 Pigment White 6 / PR101 Pigment Red 101 / PBK7 Pigment Black 7 / PY74 Pigment Yellow 74 / PG7 Pigment Green 7. I am so glad you love them so much and having both the Luminance and Lightfast there is nothing at all you won’t be able to draw. I think because of COVID so many pencil companies are very low on stock. I know Caran d’Ache have been incredibly low and suppliers have got lists as long as their arms of customers placing orders and having to wait. I think a lot of it has to do with the actual pigments, they are sourced from all over the world and even companies like Fabre Castell, Caran d’Ache and Derwent who all manufacture in house, still need to buy those pigments and the wood from over seas. I think for so many people these are really uncertain times, but whatever happen we Colored pencil artists need out pencils. I think I might become the new modern age Marvel Superhero 🦸‍♂️ Pigment Man, with his metal pins holding what’s left of his spine together, he soars the skies in is disabled buggy come flying machine, buying pigments and leaving on the door steps of pencil companies, like Santa in the middle of the night. 🤣🤣🤣 Hope you manage to complete your set and if you don’t Pigment Man will come to the rescue.
