Classic setup. Today’s rifles can’t touch this. In these days of exotic calibers, the .243 Win still shines. Old school is the best.

Awesome group WTW. Sometimes we can't explain why groups open up like it did at 200 yards. I would always check tightness of action screws, barrel touching in forearm unevenly, scope mounts, and how hot the barrel has become. A hot barrel can push on contact points in stock moving point of impact. Even lot numbers of boxes of ammunition can change things. I was shooting factory ammunition in a .270 rifle and only had three rounds left in a box. I shot those and they hit an 1 1/2 high dead center. I opened up a new box with different lot number and it hit like 2 inches to the right and 3 inches low. That's why I try to open boxes and look at the lot numbers if I'm buying multiple boxes of ammunition. Just thought I'd share that with you. Also repetitiveness. Make sure you handle rifle the same way with every shot. Forearm placement, trigger squeeze, etc. Love your channel. Keep it up.👍😊

WTW, enjoyed watching, the second group at 200 yards probably a hot barrel, you shoot real well. I just bought a Ruger American .243 and have to sight it in. I don't have any Remington Core-Lokt's, but 100 grain Winchester Powerpoints. I'll try and get some Remington's. I'm over 60 and the .243 Win. is great for all ages, young , old and in between!

Adam, a fun video with the 243. It is a great but underestimated caliber. The WBY Vanguard is a great rifle. What a great group @ 200 yds! Your 2nd tried group @ 200 yrs was in a straight up and down line. This may indicate a rest or a breathing mechanic failure. You may have been so excited with the .3 Inch group that you neglected your correct breathing technique. I applaud your sniper group @ 200.

I have to wonder if the parallax at 100 wasn't proper, but was on at 200. Found out that was what was happening to a .308 that was shooting tighter @ 200 than 100. The parallax adjustment on the scope just wasn't accurate at closer ranges, and once I got it doped (parallax was correct when the dial read 70 yards!), my groups shrank appropriately.

Using to many zooms at a 100yds. It messes with the parallax.

For the typical 100-150lb here in North Central Texas, the .243 is a great option. A lot of people around here use a .243, 25-06, or even a 250-3000.

Core Lokt’s are great for the price. I buy them at Farm & Fleet. My Savage .243 shoots them well. I sight in for Maximum Point Blank Range. Center punching at 31 yards gets me 2 out of 3 in the bullseye at 209 yards. Aim at the vitals & pull the trigger. Freezer is full of venison. Nice video, thank you.

Whootee, I watch your shooting style, a lot. That best group you hand a lot of hand on the wrist stock! Now, people have ragged on me for years, but I shoot the best when I do that. It steadies the whole damn sha bang a bang right down to the spin of the bullet! Been there, done that, but you're right there NOW!

My three oldest kids shoot .243's. The oldest of them shoots a consistent .75" or less group for five shots with handloads. Quite often I've shot .3-.5" at 100 and 200 on back to back groups. I've been told that it's due to barrel harmonics and the bullet finally "settles down" during the flight.

WHIo_TEE_WHO that Remington load is the load I used to beak in my 243. Then measured some of them, took one apart measured the powder charge. After some testing with IMR-7872 came up a load that shot to the same point of impact as the factory loading. In most rifles the 100 Gr loads weather it the Remington Federal or Winchester produces the tightest .groups.

My Uncle shot basic Rem core lokt/psp back in the 70s and 80s out of his REM 742 , in 243. His 742 was actually quite accurate and he took many deer out to 300 yards-ish with this combo. I witnessed him drop 3 deer off hand (at the time legal for a farmer/landowner hunting on his own property) with 3 shots at 280 yards. They all ran from the field into the woods, and we laughed and figured he missed all three. We walked down to the end of the field and all three were laying dead within 10 yards of the field edge in the woods. Potent combo.

Great video…my favorite deer caliber from years gone by was the .25-06 which was few years before the caliber was popular (resized .30/06 was pretty much the only option)…reloading data was pretty much limited to word of mouth (no internet)…the non .30 bullets were not as accepted as today…my .25-06 was a step up from my Savage Model 99 in 250/3000 which was a killer with 100 grain boolots 🫣

Every bbl like its own load. Factory dosent give one much choice. I used to ladder step dozens of different loads. Found the one that bbl liked best & stuck with it from then on. Remington/ Sako bbls seemed to be the best all around. My wifes Remington 243 loved the 85 grain Sierra blitz. Would explode IN the deers heart. Instant drop. Messed up wolves/ yotes too, no exit but a real mess inside. Shot a young charging grizzly point blank. No other choice, i was running out to shoot a duck when the bear & i surprised each other. Slug went through a rib & exploded in the bears heart. Face down instantly, never got up. 243 is NOT to be underestimated.

Wow, that's great WTW! I never did try the Remington core lokt or the core lokt tipped, but I have my Marlin S7 (243W) zeroed with Federal blue box 100 grain psp. Most of my groups are around 1", some a little less, some a little more. Depends on the consistency of the ammo and my trigger squeeze. Last time I shot it at the range, I took it out to 400 yards and according to the bdc of my Banner scope, it was really close. Hitting 8" plates was a breeze with that rifle, until it got hot. When the barrel gets hot, she strings like string cheese, lol. A minute per shot or even 2 minutes and the accuracy stayed true. I did try some PPU 90 grain and 100 grain, both of those gave me groups from 2"-3". My gun just didn't like that ammo much.

Great to see your boy making a fine shot! Wow that's a tight group. I think the barrel was hot on the second 200 yd group. My 300wby doesn't shoot that tight, but will get hot on the second group and lose accuracy. That's a sweet shooting 243.

my first rifle was a remington 700 in 243. i always hated the trigger even at the age of 12 lmao. but it gave me results. i took my first 2 white tail with it with amazing results. i tried my hand at pronghorn the next year and got one. and this was obviously a fluke i will admit to. but i shot an antelope straight through the ears at 250 yards with that gun. it was my second shot and i am on the plains with a bunch of wheat grass in my way. walked up to the animal and it was bleeding from the mouth, with only one bullet wound to the bottom of the stomache. love the 243!!!

WTW I have a Browning lever action in 243, and when I went deer hunting I would use Remington 100 grain Lead Point Core Lokts. They worked and they were very accurate in that 20 inch 10 twist barrel, it loved them. I took a lot of deer (even big Utah mule deer) and pigs with that 243 using those 100 gr Core lokts, sure miss them. I live in California where we have to use non lead, I quit using it when we had to go to non lead. Got me a 300 Weatherby mag Mark5 and I shoot non lead 150 ttsx bullets / 3400 fps. About 2 yrs ago I pulled that 243 out of the safe and showed it to my grandson. I took him out to the garage and showed him how to reload some 80 gr ttsx bullets shooting at about 3000 fps, . Took him shooting, looks like I will have to buy me another 243. Maybe a bolt action this time around. Lol

I'd be sure and put that target up on the fridge or at least on the wall in the man cave! I have an old Turk 98 8mm mauser (sporterized with a Timney trigger) that will put 3 holes touching with Rem core lokts-absolutely impressed. The fun thing is that Remington discontinued that cartridge in the 8x57 :( oh well, it was fun while it lasted!

I really like the core-lokts for a open sight or shots under 200 yards. Ive tested these bullets for high velosity impacts threw 1"x6" wood and water jugs with great expansion results. I also tested them without wood and I could'nt catch them in my attempts because of lack of expansion. My conclusion is that they need to impact bone to expand otherwise they may pensil through game which will result in a slow bleeding channel allowing the game to run for hundreds of yards. I recomend running your own expansion/penitration tests at different yardages and velocities for any projectile you intend to use for hunting.

Back when I was a T'weener and started Deer hunting I got a 700 BDL from Santa and used it until I was allowed to go to Wyoming for an Elk hunt . Inherited my Papaw's 700 BDL in 30-06 for that . My uncle handloaded all the ammo for the family , and my 243 got a diet of Speer Hot Core 80 grainers over a charge of IMR 4064 ( don't recall the powder weight ) , but it was deadly on our smallish East Tennessee whitetails , most fell over where they stood .

Great group at 200 yards man. In my 6mm bench rest guns some bullets I shoot for short range are 1 hole 5 shot groups at 100 yards. At 200 they open up to over an inch or better. My 200 yard load shoots terrible at 100 yards because the bullet I use is longer with a different ogive and takes it some distance to go to sleep as they say and settle down.

I owned a Vanguard in 6.5 CM that would shoot same hole groups at 200 yards with Core-Lokts as well. I will tell you that a Vanguard is extremely accurate until the 4th shot. I've seen it time and time again. 3 shots in the same hole then, the 4th shot is way off. I think that is what happened with this Vanguard as well. The barrel gets too hot to stay on target. Weatherby Vanguard.... extremely accurate....unless you need 4 shots to kill a deer.

Dang I missed the live.....my kid has a Ruger American 243 he shoots federal power Shok 100gr jsp... I picked up a Savage hardwood stock Acu trigger scope already mounted a few years ago for $195 out the door brand new haven't shot that one yet.

I've had some issues with core lokt being alot slower than advertised velocity. They've always killed deer, and been fairly accurate, but I've had 2 separate boxes, different lot numbers, of 270 win 130gr core lokts chronograph at 2675 fps. I believe the speed on the box was 3060 or something like that. I handload all my ammo now, and usually go way hotter than factory, but under 2700 fps in a 270 is significantly slow. That said, the 30-30 core lokt 150gr was going almost exactly box velocity. So maybe it's just their 270 ammo that's slow.
@MichaelJones-tk4xt
@MichaelJones-tk4xt 2 года назад
You probably already know this but most factory produced ammunition is tested out of 24 inch long barrels so the velocity data printed on the boxes are more than likely for the 24 in barrels.

@@MichaelJones-tk4xt my 270 has a 24 inch barrel. I've gotten handloads up to 3200 fps before showing pressure signs with certain powders. I can very safely load go 3150.

Same corelokt is garbage in my opinion. So is 243. Should be illegal to hunt dears with such a small round. Any buck that’s not shot in the heart or spine will run for miles to never be seen from again.

I needed this as a reminder - I have a heavy bbl .243 700 that I have not had to the range in thirty years. I only have 40 rounds for it! A while back, I replaced the ancient huge and heavy 12x fixed Unertl scope with a modern 4x16, but I have not shot it yet.

Look out for ammo. 243 was extremely difficult to find for a while. It's coming around, but it's not no $15-$17/box any more. Cheapest I've seen it was $25 and that was PPU ammo and that was a while ago.

@@toddk1377 Thanks, I just checked Academy online - IF it is in-stock, Norma was $1.15 per round, up to Hornady at $2.15 per round. And even if it is in the store, sales taxes are 7% here.

Not a .243 fan myself but I know lots of folks love it. In Michigan’s heavy cover and timber I’ll stick with a .35. Great video on a versatile cartridge.

@@bobborlog1677 I hear it’s a great open country varmint round, like 6 millimeter or 25/06 with light bullets. I just lean in the other direction for deer. I’ve had good success with the .350 Remington Magnum and .44 Magnum on Whitetail. Tracking, trailing or looking for blood hasn’t happened. Maybe I’m just careful about shot placement. I do believe crunching a .308 case down to .243 creates an intense cartridge. I expect it would make a crow look like it swallowed a cherry bomb.

35 Remington is a good woods gun but 243 does the job in open country.
@rascal0175
@rascal0175 2 года назад
@@dr.froghopper6711 I kind of split the difference with the .350 Remington Magnum, bigger bore, heavier bullet, ample velocity. Handloads make it even better. It’s like a compact and portable .35 Whelen. Does alright on varmints with revolver bullets but it doesn’t have the .243s versatility and range. When the distance from bullet to buck is sometimes measured in feet, range doesn’t matter much. Hits hard though. After a placed shot deer don’t wander off.
