According to my ballistic calculator, when you sight in at 100 yards you are 3.2 inches low at two hundred yards, and if you sight in at 200 yards you are only 1.5 inches high at 100 yards, it seems like a 200-yard sight in gives you a more practical sight in for most hunting applications.

I'm so old that I recall "The Battle of the Small Bores" back in the 1960s. The thirty calibers were the kings of the woods back then. And along came the .243 and .270. Since I'm a big bore (.32 and up) lever gun kind of guy the "little bores" have never found a place in MY gun safe. But I must admit that I've seen many a deer and hog taken cleanly with both .243s and .270s. I'm probably going to be flamed for saying this, but some folks consider the .243 a beginners or small persons (think pre-teen, teen or lady's) cartridge. If I were to suddenly feel moved to switch to a bolt action rifle, I would not feel under gunned when hunting deer or hogs with a .243 loaded with modern ammo.

Good and important video, especially for hunters. Adam, to "completely" get info on behaviour of the ammo you should use 2 chronographs simultaneously: one 10 yards from barrel, second just in front of the target. Possibility of hitting the Chrono is small (no fliers and precision is good enough as far as I can see)

G'day, Its good to see the charts. One Idea would be to have a comparison round that you show side by side. Use the same comparison chart each time you do a new cartridge. If you make the .243 the "standard" round then you will get some that drop more and some that will be flatter shooters.

All of my kids shoot a .243 for deer. Rarely is a shot taken over 200 yards. If the animal is over 200 lbs over the shots could extend beyond 250 yards, we use a gun with more "horsepower". The next step up for the kids is the 7mm-08. Great shooting, by the way. Keep up the good work.

Nice job! Check out Max Point Blank Range, (MPBR). It's not for 500 to 1000 yards, but for fast accurate shooting within distance, according to caliber and ballistics. You decide the diameter of the kill zone, at close range you hit the top of your zone at the extended range you hit at the bottom of your chosen targeted zone. Excellent for those who don't want to have to know nothing but the farthest distance of MPBR. Which you can easily pin point with a range finder and make mental notes of in the bush. My 243 with my hand loads puts a dead center hold out to 365 yards if I remember correctly. Long shot for the average Tennessee and Kentucky hunters with no holdover or turret twisting. I've used this for years hunting varmints to whitetail and it is simple and flat out works. Great video! Keep'em coming WTW!

@@jasonashleytillman880 That's not surprising Ron and I have both been around awhile!🤣😂 It really is an excellent way to set up a hunting rifle. Especially for short to medium range hunting. 300 to 500 yards ain't no chip shot in my opinion. I always felt it was easier to hold under point of aim at close range than over at long range. Just my experience over half a decade of being an active outdoorsman. It's a simple but very effective and suprising way to take game at longer ranges.
@garthtimmins2852
@garthtimmins2852 Год назад
I recently read that for a .243 with 100 grain bullets and a 25 yard zero, the maximum point blank range for a 6" target is 296 yards. That means that you can aim dead on and be within plus or minus 3" out to almost 300 yards. Three inches high at 100 and 3 inches low at 300. Good enough to be in the kill zone of a deer. That works for me because I decided that I won't take a shot beyond 300 yards.

I sight my 243's at 300 as a factory 100 grain load ( Winchester 100 gr soft point) my favorite does not have enough rise or fall to worry about bullet drop from 50 to 300 + yards to be concerned with. My most favored 243 is a Wal-Mart closeout purchase Remington 700 ADL Youth model with a cheap plastic Remington factory stock. I replaced the plastic trigger guard with a steel one. This rifle has a one shot kill record of: 1 at 200+ yards, 2 at about 75 yards each, 1 at about 50 yards and 1 about 100 yards. Each list here was by different people. Translation: 4 different people 5 shots 5 deer. Each list was at different years. 2 were adults and 2 were children. My estimation this is a good track record!

I have been using my Remington 700 BDL . 243 since I bought it new in 1977. I have taken mule deer, white tails, coastal black tails and wild pigs with it. Longest shot measured was 370 yards….. everything ended up in the freezer, no tracking, only two deer did I ever shoot twice and that was just to finish them faster.

Bullet drop is useful to know and its all people and computer programs continually emphasize but max ordinate is what's useful to understand trajectory behavior to the target...bullet drop is useful to get on target at various ranges but you better understand the apex of trajectory to help you understand point blank range....but computer programs dont tell you that kind of information...its like the difference between knowing how to read a map vs blindly following GPS directions which can get you backed into a corner and not knowing how to get out..
@gsh341
@gsh341 7 месяцев назад
For deer hunting, most hunting ammunition needs 1,900 fps of velocity to expand properly. According to you chart, that makes this a 400 yard rifle with that ammunition. That leaves you with 28" of drop. This is the weakness of a lot of calibers. The combination of bullet velocity and ballistic coefficient isn't optimized for shots over 400 yards. You'll see similar max hunting ranges with most calibers. Either the heavy bullet means slow muzzle velocity, but a great BC or the light bullet will have poor BC and a great muzzle velocity. Many of the newer rounds are solving this issue with longer and higher BC bullets available for the caliber. For example, the standard 243 maxes out around 95 grains of bullet weight. But the 6mm Creedmoor has a slightly heavier bullet with a much higher BC, but manages to keep the velocity very close to the. 243. That's why it's effecting range is longer.

There is nothing like some wood furniture on a rifle and a nice shined up blue. That gun makes me want a .243 so bad haha. My first deer rifle was a New England Arms .243 with a “fancy” thumb-hole laminate stock and a Simmons .44 Mag scope (with sunshade to look cool lol). I used the good ole Lokts too. I could hit a Skoal can at 300 yards as easily as taking a breath. I miss that gun. I think I may get me another .243 soon. Just for the heck of it lol. Happy hunting brother.

It has the same drop as a .308, 270, 30-06, 7mm-08. If all were sighted in at 200, they would be 4-6 inches low at 300.

.243 is on at 200 high by an inch and a half or so at 100 and then the scope has two dots that are 300 and 400 yards no need to mess with any of the scope dialing and you don't really want to take the .243 to 500 yards anyway.

You know that weatherby action is the same action that is used in the howa 1500

Now if I could just find some Core-Lokt 243 on the shelf near me... Still looking for it. I would love to see a comparison of the std Core-Lokt verses the Core-Lokt Tipped for the .243.

I think an interesting one to do would be the .22-250 because I know from experience that it’s a very flat shooting round even out to distance.

500 yds far enough and max for deer, fps down to 1800 any slower may not expand, i have one and good enough for anything here in the UK

Nice video WTW, just bought a Ruger American in .243. It seems to me that even at 200 yards, 1-2 inch bullet drop would still be in the vitals of a deer so why change your hold position at all? What do you think? Also, I noticed from your chart, the energy at 300 yards is over 1000 ft. lbs still enough to ethically take a deer! At that range, I would definitely hold high.

Still enough to take a moose. Ive seen it done. And dont come at me with that ethical bs.

I started with the 100gr core locks and liked them then a older gentleman told me to try some 95gr hp and they perform great! Big difference on putting down game might want to take a look at a 95gr
