2472 and 4449 team up on a double-header from San Jose to Watsonville Jct. during the NRHS convention. At the junction, a GP9E is used to pull the consist around the wye. This was shot in 1992.
This was such an awesome run. I was one of the lucky ones that was able to take this excursion. We made a number of stops in the canyons for run bys. I was even nice enough to walk in front of the camera while we were waiting for the train to be turned around in Watsonville. Thanks for the great memories.
Sunday July 26th, 1992 and the final day of convention, 2472 and 4449 powers the Coast Daylight Excursion. The trip ran from San Jose to Watersville Junction and return on Sp's Coast Line.
I was a first class car host on this trip. The SP geep that was supposed to pull the train around the wye died shortly after it started pulling. It was out of fuel! So 4449 ended up moving the train. SP made us use the diesel because they thought that the steam locomotives would derail on the wye.
I'd love to see just a full Daylight train again, assuming that the 197, 700, and 4449 have a home by next year. I did enjoy the irony of seeing 4449 and 3339
I used to watch this video for years and I still do because I the the photo run by shots, especially 8:49 - 9:32 which is my favorite part of the video.
@Truthseeker4449 - some of the cars have gone back to their private owners, but the crew dorm "Clackamas River" and the observation car, "James J. Gilmore" are still owned by the Friends of the 4449. The "Yes Dear" was sold just last year to the Canadian Pacific to be used as 2816's new tool car.
Still remember the ride very well. Sorry about walking through your shot at the 5:04 mark. Was wearing white with a 2472 hat and carrying a camera bag. Thanks for the memories.
SP2472 locomotive became serviceable as of February 2008 and is now stored at the NCRy's Brightside Yard awaiting opportunities and other locations to operate. Three operating events are planned for 2009. did anyone get video of the runs?
You know It would be good to for someone to aquire one of the former Espee 3/4 Length Dome Lounge's, And get it back in daylight livery, Now I know where there is one, And it's on sale, If you go to ozarkmountainrailcar and look for the gran dome, It's on a panel track with several other cars and a Pullman Dome Car from the Illinois Central orginally, The train used to be a dinner train called the Minnisota Zephyr. now it's all on panel track.
