I is mine too, but I wonder if its because they think they get less gold with the American Eagle, which is why I wrote the comment below. Some, especially in this beginners video, are asking why one would buy an ounce (emphasis on ounce) of 22k over 24k. They think they get less pure gold content which may have contributed in their decision. I personally like the shiny yellow, I like the "gold yellow" to reflect in my bullions and not look like gold jewelry, ha!
Hey I have a question. I want to get gold and silver. The lowest premium on silver in one oz that I have found the bar stamped JM. Would that be a Sellable option in the US
@luke 1911 Hell ya! Johnson Matthey (spelling?) Is one of the most known with lots of vintage stauff too! Your safe with any version of JM bar in my opinion. I'm about a year late on this reply so I'm sure you already bought something? Well here's to your purchase 🥳🥳CHEERS 🤙
Goin for my first 1 oz Gold on my b-day in April. I’m definitely getting the American gold eagle, I’ve been wanting one for the last 7 to 8 years just never had the money saved up. This year will finally be the time to acquire my first gold piece.
As an investor and a professional Jeweller myself, 24k is all the way for me because you can melt down and turn it into anything else without cracking.
@@em4703 -- 22k is less malleable than 24k and work hardens more. If you aren't careful, overworking 22k (without periodic annealing) can lead to brittleness and fracturing.
I agree. They're gorgeous coins with very clean lines. They simply don't turn up much here, so I don't buy them. It's a popularity thing, definitely not an aesthetic thing. Cheers!
Britannias are in my opinion the number 1 gold coin in the world. This channel talks a lot of Britannias, Royal mint and UK bullion dealers ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-veOKmEh4Bxw.html
You are actually getting the same gold weight in an American Eagle plus some additional metals for the same price. I like both! It’s absolutely personal preference
@kevin McDonagh - that is how I’ve always felt, especially after the first time I saw one in person. It looks cheap to me. I don’t like the highly reflective 24k coins either, but the Buffalo went to the other extreme and made them so dull, that it does not look real. Plus, it’s just a damned nickel coin. Nothing new and interesting to celebrate about the design.
I prefer buffalos as well. I wish they were made in fractional size. They released fractional buffalos in bullion from in 2008 as well. The Maple Leaf was 999 until 1982 or 83.
9999 was ‘83 or it was midway through ‘82. I’ve seen 999 ‘82 Maples. I don’t remember the bullion fractional Buffalos,. Crazy that they don’t reintroduce them. Thanks for watching, Sal!
I have a strong preferance for 22k because of durability. Otherwise I'd really go for the Maples. I suspect they're currently the most widely accepted internationally.
So many people ask that question! Good job! The Maple, The Eagle or Buffalo.... The same troubling choice I have agonized over in the past. WHY CHOOSE? Get all of them!
New stacker digging back in your videos. Decided to stick with currency with gold. Was able pick to pick up AGE & AGB during that last dip. Monthly goal is a 1/2 Oz. Just got 2 1/4 oz GML on a black Friday sale.
Am I weird that I’m only really interested in 22k? For me, it’s largely about the handleability and the appearance. Even if they weren’t “fragile”, almost all 24k coins are proofs or super shiny. I just don’t like that. I like the feeling of a coin used for commerce, even if it wasn’t actually used as such…like the Krugerand. So for me, pre-33 and larger foreign coins (100 corona, 50 peso, etc) are what really interest me.
Not interested in paying 12% tax here in Canada for 22k gold. Combine that with the extra premium that the Eagle commands, and that's a lot of gold for me to give up when I can buy a 24k Maple Leaf for 4% premium and no tax. I love the gold Eagle though, so I will still buy one for the collection, but stacking it makes no sense for most people outside of America.
I think it would be cool to do an update video comparing the 22K American Gold Eagle to the 24K 2016 Centennial Gold Walking Liberty Half-Dollar showing the aesthetics differences and beauty. Great videos keep up the great work!!!
Depends if you want to handle it or not, I love my maple but rarely touch it, I have krugerrand and can touch till I get bored and not put a mark on it, both hold equal value
@@dboi4952 I like to do a ping test on coins, which comes down to playing coin toss. So in my case I guess it's good to have a preferance for krugs and gold eagles. Maples, on the other hand, seem to have great security features which may render running a ping test a little unnecessary. Oh well, maybe I should just get myself one of those Precious Metal Verifiers.
@@goldaddict6427i hear ya. you can use the eraser side of a new pencil for that test, it actually makes a louder, clearer tone than using another coin.
For me it's about whether or not I can handle my gold physically, I just love the touch and feel of the coins so even though I got a few 24 carats it's the 22 for me :-)
Good point. Bars pretty much sit home and dont get messed with. If you are going to carry a few coins in a wallet for backup, durability is king. Buyers hate scratched coins.
Why would anyone carry a few gold coins in their wallet for “backup?” That sounds like a very dangerous thing to do, since you could lose your wallet, get pickpocketed, etc. not to mention they are not liquid and you’d need a coin shop or jeweler to convert to cash.
I agree and like my gold to look very yellow, but in the Eagle's defense, most people think they get less pure gold with the Eagle. It is one ounce of pure 24k gold, just that they add silver and copper, so the coin is 2.8 grams heavier. One does not have less content of gold, it does have one full ounce of pure gold, but mixed, blended with alloys, hence, 22k. I see it as free silver and copper though... So, I buy Maple or Buffalo because I like to see my coins be very yellow and not look like jewelry, but not because I am confused thinking I get less gold with the American Eagle.
This is a video worth watching twice! 8 months later here I am! To anyone watching this after me, put it in a playlist so you can come back to it. Thank you 2 is 1.
Take it from a gold stacker, 22k American Gold Eagles are better. The Gold Eagles have just a little silver and copper added to them -- it makes the Gold Eagle a lot harder and more robust. And *that* makes the Gold Eagle much easier to handle. Eagles don't scratch or scuff easily. I love them, you can throw Eagles in any old tube or pouch or whatever, they won't scuff or scratch. This is *much* different than 24k Buffalos or Maples, which you need to be really careful with, else unscrupulous dealers will ding you for a bit of money for even small scratches (which is BS). Maples and Buffalos are really nice coins, and yes I would stack them as well. But you really need to be careful with them, and I hate that aspect of 24k / .9999 purity coins. Rub two of them together, they are going to scratch.
Yeah, it's a huge component and one that doesn't come across on RU-vid showing pristine coins. I have more AGEs than anything else and always will. Cheers!
I waited years to get a 1 oz gold coin and of course when I got one it’s at the highest price golds been at. The problem is you can’t stop at one and since then I got 2 more and it’s a little too addictive lol
Great video. I have two gold AE, a philharmonic, a buffalo, and a maple with a 2021 maple on the way upon it's shipping from JM bullion. I agree with the mix. Total of just under 17 Oz's of gold with the new one coming. Very good explanation
I swore that was the case, but Wikipedia said otherwise. Salivate Metal told me that too. 99% of the people who watch these videos are jealous of you! 😁
Government minted gold coins are not going to be melted down unless the coin is damaged so purity is only opinion. I like the Eagle over the Maple, and it comes with free silver and copper.
It's irrelevant if you buy 22K or 24K gold as both kinds are sold on gold content not coin weight. Granted some coins do have advantages over others but that has nothing to do with purity . The best coins to buy tend to be determined by region. You should buy your local gold so if for American buy eagles if you are British buy sovereign or Britannias etc
Semi Numismatic Guy: Exactly !! A 22k one ounce gold coin contains the same amount of gold as a 24k coin......a lot of people don't seem to understand this.
@@paganphil100 for my local gold coins they mix the 22ct coins with copper making them a slightly strange colour which isn't as visually pleasing as 24ct or 22ct mixed with silver
Krugs used to be cheaper but gold premiums are going up! We're going on a gold standard so don't quibble with gold, keep buying it, best store of wealth
@@goldeneye70 I don't quibble, I buy the dip. And I don't ever panic buy. I don't see how we will ever see a gold standard again. If there is a monetary reset, it will be with a brand new fiat currency, possibly global. They can't print gold, and they'll (governments) never agree to limit themselves from doing so again. Of course, with China stockpiling gold the past decade or so, they might surprise us all and do it. It would become THE reserve currency by default. We'll see.
@@goldeneye70 Well, I can't promise to live that long LOL. If not, send me a text. But remember, they never run out of ways to come out on top. Executive order 6102 for example in 1933. Nothing to stop them from doing that again, confiscating all gold in order to go on a gold standard. Then they hand you a wad of, again, paper money... and revalue the new currency to rob you of 40% of the value they took. Pretty neat trick. Even if your gold is stashed away from them, you can't use it because it will be illegal to own. Currently, a gold standard does not serve them in any way. Were they to adopt it, it would only be because they found a way for it to serve them rather than you.
@@phoenixmichaels finally someone who thinks!! I agree, they made the money they make the rules, they own the banks. I guess they own the Earth, or do they?
Don’t you think it’s an advantage that you don’t have to handle 22 karat gold ias carefully as 24 karat gold? And the coin still contains one troy ounce of gold. However, you prefer 24 karat, because it’s more beautiful. I get that. I like beauty too.
Great discussion! At the end of the day, you’re absolutely right - it’s whatever you like, and if you’re undecided, it’s whatever is easier to sell (more popular). For me, I lean towards the purity of the Gold Buffalo. The American Gold Eagle is more well known (popular) in my opinion because of the classic St Gaudens design, but the Buffalo is my choice for purity.
Nice collection!! I cannot afford any of this, but if I could I’d go with the pure .9999 buffalo or maple. Seems the relative durability of 22 Carat on coins of such high value is irrelevant. Those are my thoughts anyway. Great vid and channel. Thx.
1 oz gold either way. I suspect- could be wrong- the mint does it for themselves. Sturdier coin. Crisp and even, no issues with uneven edges and such. Crank'em out perfect, no need for kid glove handling.
Interesting video topic. I recently interviewed the channel Golden Gun and he said that in Australia, 22K gold has an 8% tax, but 24K has no tax. Interesting, huh? Like you, I really don't have a preference.
@@2is1gold Do you know where that rule comes from? How do they come up with this stuff? Is it specifically to discourage buying S. Arfikan and US bullion?
I like them both! I am not picky at all when I buy gold! I just like to have some variety and get all different coins for the collection! Great video and thanks for sharing!
For whatever reason I've only owned and will probably continue to own 24k when it comes to gold. IF I could find an AGE without a horrible premium, I might jump on it. But Man, Buffalo, Maple, and others those sure do shine different, don't they? I have some Phil Harmonics that are just gorgeous.
I'm a new stacker, but can say I don't have a preference. I'm sure it's a very unpopular opinion, but I'm not a fan of AGEs. It has nothing to do with them being 22k, I'm just not a fan of the design. I own a philharmonic because it was the cheapest 1/4 oz gold in stock when I wanted to buy. Even though I'm not a fan of AGEs, if that's all that was available at the time I would still buy it.
I like the Canadian Maple leaves, just the coloration is more pleasing to me. The AGE appears brassy to me. Government minted, bordering democracy, don’t plan on selling but holding it generationally.
IF I CAN BUY BOTH AT THE SAME PRICE, (and it’s that "right price") then it’s always the BUFFALO. Always. If I can’t get that price then it’s the "croud favorite" the Gold Eagle. Love both.
Hello. Commenting on an old video today... I have maples, but I keep them in original mint tubes; not capsules, but if I wanted to show them off, then I do see the need for airtites.
I always buy 24k for investment purposes. From a jewelers perspective, I only buy 22k coins if I’m making a piece. If I need to make a ring or something I’ll go to the coin shop and get it.
I prefer .999 gold. No "solid" reason for that, except as you aptly noted, my personal preferences. I just like the idea that it's pure, and I like the idea that all of the "how much actual gold do I have?" math is just easier.
All depends. Do you want to take the coins and handle them the best is 22K If you want to put them on cases and never touch them then .9999 pure would be a better choice
Newbie question. If the Eagle is not 24k but still contains an ounce of gold and has the same ring size, does that mean it’s slightly thicker and heavier due to the added metals?
buy a few shares of AMC wait for the short squeeze (which is imminent in my opinion) and then buy a bunch of Goldveagles. well this is my plan just sharing...!!
Does it really matter? I'm buying Maples, krugerrand, buffalo, eagles, britannia etc. I'm just buying the most recognisable coins. These are easy to buy and sell in Holland.
That's the important point. Grab the ones that are easy to buy and sell. We do have popularity tiers here. AGEs and AGBs are at the top of the popularity pyramid here.
I agree. Buy the lowest priced gold and I have been doing this for years. Look for sales, promotions, cycling of spot prices.... at the end of the day, it’s the GOLD that counts.
Agreed. For me it’s mostly old 20 franc pieces which are 90%. Very low premiums, no tax and readily available as well as being priced low nominally (since it’s only 5,8 grams).
As an American i love the AGE gold coins but i have to go with 24 karats, so either the American Gold Buffalo or Gold Kangaroo coins from the Perth Mint will do it for me! Sorry but i'm just not a big fan of the Maple Leaf even though i do own a 1/10 oz example.
@@Chrisinsocal I have nothing against them or the Royal Canadian Mint but i just like more variety in the gold coins i collect, therefor i prefer the Perth Mint as by best choice so far.
I'm primarily a platinum stacker but when I buy gold it's strictly AGE. In America gold eagles carry a premium. Over the summer when I sold 20 gold eagles to buy more platinum I got $50 over spot for my eagles. Stack what works in your area.
@@2is1gold I appreciate the well wishes but no luck needed I've never lost money on buying the undervalued metal of the era. Got into silver at $9 range and palladium in the $400-$600 range. Platinum is poised to perform like those other metals did for me in the past. Anyways I enjoy your videos, you got a new sub out of me
Why platinum? From what I’ve read, platinum will continually drop in the long term, due to slowing demand for catalytic converters, as electric cars don’t use them.
I wish it was better explained in all the videos I have watched. No one seems to use the proper semantics or add clarity. People, you are not getting less gold with the American Eagle. The coin has the same circumference but he failed to mention that is thicker. This is because it weighs more than one ounce, 2.8 grams more, because it has 2.8 additional grams of silver and copper. So, it has ONE ounce of pure 24k gold, mixed, blended, melted together, with ADDED silver and copper. So, it has the intrinsic value of an ounce of pure exquisite 24k gold, but it is 22k because is evenly blended with the two alloy metals. The way I see it, is harder and you get free silver and copper. I had to comment because many question why choose an ounce of less pure gold, it is one ounce, complete ounce, of PURE gold and added (total weight ends up being more than an ounce) silver and copper.
There's nothing like the marriage of copper and gold, it's absolutely the eagle for me, the Buffalo doesn't pop but it's very nice. The obverse caricature queen on the newer Maple is horrendous

I like the 1/4 oz as well. Perhaps some day I’ll roll my wheel chair up to a coin shop twice a month to cash in a coin or two. I got a 1/4 Buffalo but missed out on the 1/4 platinum the same year. Coins, coins, coins... love them!!
I'm from EU. Here the tax law is like Canada. If the gold has 995/1000 purity is exempt from paying taxes. I will stack these 1/10oz, 1/2oz and 1oz coin. Right now i'm just buying the Philharmonic, but the buffalo is awesome too
I am going to buy 1 more AGE 1oz by the end of the year (at least) but I was thinking it would drop one more time before the holidays... I am going to also look for $50 FV of Junk Halves (completes personal goal for the year)... I got a lot more Platinum this year than I had planned but we'll see... Buffalos are the best, we all know that and agree it seems...
I have all my 1oz. coins in tubes all touching each other 24 and 22 ct. Don't believe it matters altho if they are loose I put cotton on 1 end so they don't shake. Hoping it doesn't matter I have never sold any
