As most people have said...the 25-06 is more effective if zeroed at 200 yards. I have a custom 25-06 with a 24" magnum contour barrel. I hand load 110gr. Accubonds and get 1/2" groups at 200 yards. I use it when hunting powerlines and fresh cutovers here in Alabama. I've taken a few deer at just over 200 yards with it and didn't have to track the deer. They usually fell in their tracks or stumbled for a few yards before crashing. I enjoyed your video.

The 25-06 is my favorite. Got my first one in 1967 and I've shot lots of deer, antelope and coyotes with thousands of p-dogs as well. I've shot over 40,000 rounds by now. I used .243,, 270, 35 Rem and 30-06 but put them in the safe when I shot my first 25-06. I shoot Hornady Interlock 100g bullets for deer at 3350 fps and have only recovered two bullets. Both penetrated lengthwise and stuck in the hide on the off side. One was a big buck on the dead run at 250 yards (shattered pelvis, 3 spit ribs on the left, 3 split ribs on the right and heart cut in half); the other an antelope at 500 yards. Most heavy lead slingers think you need a 180g bullet to kill a deer but I've never had one move after impact by a 100g bullet out as far as 500 yards. I do use the 115 Berger for 1000 yard p-dogs and it would kill a deer out to about 700 yards. I'm now shooting the 131g Blackjack with a 7.5 twist barrel and they would kill deer at 1000 yards. 90% of my shots have been with 75g bullets at targets and varmints. I shot one deer with a 117g Hornady to see what would happen. The bullet was slower at 3150 fps but the 100 yard deer died instantly. About half the game I've shot has been on the run and the speed of the 100g 25-06 makes those shots very predictable.

Im with you 100% I use lighter bullets on whitetail deer also. Id rather my bullets not exit the deer, I get quick instant kills when the deers body absorbs all tue shock from the bullet rather than the bullet putting all yhat energy on the ground or on a tree after a pass thru.

Definitely one of my favorite whitetail cartridges. My favorite factory load has always been the Winchester with the 120 gr Positive Expansion Points if you can find them. I will agree with others comments on here about zeroing it at 200 yards. Any shot under 200 will still be in the kill zone with a dead on hold.

i Have use a 25-06 for about 25 years now. I have taken many whitetails here in michigan and i love it. I use 117 grain hornadys. they were a little faster and less drop at distance. I took two deer in about 20 seconds one year. first was at 190yrds and put it in the center of the back of its head. the 2nd one jumped up when i hit the first and ran out to about 200 yrds and put that one threw the ear canal. I had to look where I hit it for awhile. I am in a wheelchair so I cant go chasing a deer down threw the woods, so i take head shots hate me or not I dont care. one thing I didnt like and it suprised me, is that both of those shots stayed inside the head. They never even knew what hit them and the brains were well not as solid as they could of been.but its a tack driver and I'll stick with it until I move to a bigger prey.

Head shots are stupid. Base of the neck is better, high shoulder even better.
@jamesfrost5261
@jamesfrost5261 5 месяцев назад
@JamesJones-cx5pk just because you are not good enough to take a head shot doesn't mean you have to call them stupid. I don't hunt for antlers, so if I screw up a good mount, it doesn't matter to me. With a headshot, i dont waste a single ounce of meat like I would with a neckbor heart shot. Also, the deer doesn't run when I hit them. It's lights out instantly, and they don't even know they are dead. So don't come on here trying to put me down for being skilled enough to take a shot you can't. If I do make a bad shot, the deer runs away, and it's unharmed, unlike a bad neck or heart shot. Either one of those shots they can run for miles before they ley down and die. If they do go that far, then chances you trail them that far is about zero. At that point, it's a wasted deer.

I live in Montana,my deer gun for years was 25/06. It's devastating on deer. Usually only one shot and they were done. I live in a area where many shots are 300 yds or more. 2 years ago I switched to 270wsm, it's been perfect and a little more power at longer ranges.

I agree the 25-06 is a fantastic cartridge. One thing I will note is that it is fully capable of shooting anything in North America. Personally a number of years ago I was hunting whitetail and I also had a moose draw. There was no intention to fill the tag before moose camp. Came around a corner and there was a big bull at around 125 yards. One shot with a 120gr nosler partition and it was lights out. My father was with me and he was impressed at how 25-06 dropped it. To be fair, it is not what I would recommend for moose but it worked as that was what I had with me! It is 100% about bullet placement and selection. But I also believe there is no replacement for displacement.

@@leadhead7338 35w is probably a good deer caliber, but I just listed what was popular in my area. I am sure there are a lot others that are popular in other places. I hear a lot about 7mm-08 on the internet, as being a great deer cartridge, but here in my area, I have yet to hear anyone around here talking about that particular one. @@slickdazzler7330 I’m not sure where you’re from, but the 35 Whelan is essentially a 35-06, if you live out west, maybe a smaller caliber, flatter shooting round would be better for your hunting, I live in the Northeast Kingdom, where you very rarely get any shots over 100 yards unless it is in a field, or clear cut, or something like that, and in the woods shots usually average around 50 yards, and actually the last 4 Deer I’ve shot, have been roughly 20-30 yards, The 35 Whelen is a great deer rifle for thick softwoods areas, it’s a great brush gun, and one hell of a powerhouse! The 7MM-08 is another amazing round, since I was 12 I’ve used a 308, I was a small kid and the gun had a lot of recoil for me at that time, I had never shot a .243 or a 7MM-08 until this last year, and I was pleasantly surprised with the little to no recoil from either of them, while still being a .308 case essentially, my Son Hunts with the .243 and my nephew hunts with the 7MM-08 and they both have no problem taking a deer down, in fact I believe Whoo_Tee May have a video of him taking a buck with a 7MM-08? And both of them are long range shooting rounds as well.

Thanks for another great video! I was really psyched for this one, as I am a big fan of the .25-06. My daughter started out using my old Encore muzzleloader frame with the .25-06 rifle barrel when she was 7. I installed a Sims Limbsaver recoil pad and she never looked back. Kept our freezer full with one shot kills every time! Her longest shot was 197 yards. We only tracked one deer out of all the ones she shot. It didn't go far, but I wanted her to experience tracking. My son will start carrying the same gun next season Lord willing. I have looked at the Remington ammo, but have used the Hornady Superformance 117 grain with such success that I can't bring myself to switch! The gun absolutely loves them! You can cover 3 shots at 100 yards with a nickel on a bad day. That's pretty stout for factory ammo I believe. Thank you once again for another outstanding video!

Brings back memories . . . I took my first deer 40 years ago in central WI with my first centerfire bolt in .25-06 with Remington Core-Lokt 120-gr. Mine was a medium sized buck at about 200 yds. and my pal took a deer about the same size at maybe 75 yds. with the same rifle. The round did a nice job on my longer shot with a nice exit wound. The bullet detonated on the shoulder blade of the deer inside 100 yds. my friend took. The damage did kill the deer, but fragmented like a varmint bullet on a woodchuck and destroyed extensive meat going into the neck. I've handloaded many cartridges for myself and other hunters since. I would recommend premium bullets in .25-06 for deer hunting where shots inside 100 yds. are probable. The .25-06 is a fine low recoil choice that will reach out to long range out west on antelope or mule deer . . . one of a long list of good choices - take your pick.

I have too many to say one cartridge is the best for deer size game. I like the 25-06, 6.5-06 even more, 7-08, 6.5CM, etc...It all comes down to where you're going to hunt. The best rifle in South Louisiana might not be the best in Wyoming. Out west I like 6.5PRC, 280, 7 Rem Mag etc. My 6.5-06 has a 1:9 twist barrel and shoots 120-140 gr bullets great. Even the 123SST bullets have a 500BC. That's a big advantage if you're in the Texas panhandle and the wind blows 20+ mph all the time...and the deer are 200+ yards.

Just bought a Sako 85 Finnlight chambered in it and it's a deer slayer for sure. My preferred ammo is Federal Premium 115gr Nosler Partitions. Made a horrible shot on a big doe a couple of years ago and I got super lucky. The round entered just in front of the right ham and stopped just under the skin in front of the left shoulder. Almost a complete pass through the length of the deer. She ran about 15 yards before falling. Finding that brand ammo is getting really hard though so I may try a different one once the 2 boxes I have run out.

The 25-06 is a great cartridge. There are more bullets available for long range today than there use to be. The Core Lock ammo like I said earlier isn't much for real accuracy, but it does the job with expansion for the kill. It's not long range ammo. The 25-06 is one of those extremely accurate cartridges like the 270 and the 6.5 Creedmoor. Sub MOA is easy to achieve with either of them. Half that with good ammo and 5 shot groups not 3.

Love my 25-06; the only thing I've taken more deer with is my old 30-30. I usually don't bother with the 308 or 30-06 as the 25 has no recoil to speak of so I don't volunteer to punish myself. Good friend put me onto the 25-06 in the mid 80's and for deer it's like lightning and has never failed to drop a deer in short order but once...and that was a lousy shot on my part. Long live the quarter-bore.

Thanks for the video, the 25-06 is defiantly a wonderful cartridge. If one owns a ..270 win I can’t justify buying another rifle. But yes it is one of many great cartridges for deer. If I was to step up the power of my collection, I would go with the 300 Win mag most likely. Be safe everyone and shoot straight! 🇺🇸😎👍

Not bad groups. Core-lokt are decent bullets. 25-06 is an excellent deer & antelope chambering. Some folk use it for elk. Great varmint rifle with 75-90 bullets. Thank you

Jimmie Burleigh I can hardly see a deer past 400 yards less killing one that far😂😂 just seems to get really good accuracy out the the Norma whitetail offerings in other cal’s and for the price they can’t beat. I still have a couple boxes of the old corelokts as well as several boxes of Federal Fusions which I’ve had good luck over the years. Thanks!

Howdy Whoo-Tee I’ve always shot a .308 or a 30-06 now I have a 35 Whelen, I had never shot a .243 or 7mm-08 until I bought my boy a .243 and I couldn’t believe it has No Recoil compared to my .308, I do know a guy who uses a 25 or six and swears by it, I would imagine it has very little kick like the 243 of the 308 cartridge, also Whoo-Tee keep the young ones shooting! I just dropped another one the other day, so I’ve got 2 deer in the last 3-4 weeks here in VT,

You might consider adding the max point blank range to your 1000 yard bullistics presentation. Assumes a 6 inch bullseye, and asks the question, how far can I just point at the deer and be assured to hit within that 6 inch circle (the vitals). It calculates the best range to site in and the maximum point blank (no hold) range.
@joewoodchuck3824
@joewoodchuck3824 2 года назад
There's a whole range of deer calibers. They'll all do the job. Accuracy is the most important by far. You can't harvest what you can't hit. Strive for 1 moa.

Good stuff! Makes it hard for me choosing one all around hunting caliber. It may come down to ammo availability.
@anthonydavinci7985
@anthonydavinci7985 2 года назад
Your concern about availability is correct.. Remember 2506 for max capability is 26 "barrel..Also ,even same make ammo may still vary performance ,different batches...270 win ,VERY available COMPARED TO 2506.. Get threaded barrel in case you want to tame recoil with compensator..I hunt with 6.5 x 55 Swedish..

It’s might be the ultimate deer cartridge for smaller white tails in places like south Texas and is arguably one of the best antelope cartridges. But, the ultimate deer cartridge for deer hunting in wide open country, especially high country mule deer hunting, is the 7MM Rem Mag.

In my time ive learned there is no perfect cartridge, but theres a stack of really great ones. 25-06 is one of them. Had an uncle that bought a 25-06, 700 BDL in the early 1970s and killed a lot of deer with it for 25 yrs before shooting out the barrel. My dad re-barreled it to .270win. But the 25-06 with a 115+ grain solid copper or bonded heavy jacket will cleanly turn deer & hogs right off.
@ditchdigger93
@ditchdigger93 2 года назад
My longest deer shot was at 880 yards with a Ruger M.77 in 25-06. With that said the .270 Win. is the same thing two calibers bigger with a heavier bullet with a lot more factory loads available and if you reload the variety is almost unlimited.
