Conor is 14 years old and already kicking butt as a young entrepreneur where he lives in Commerce MI. We had an awesome time shooting an interview with him and his dad Greg today and wanted to share his story with you guys!
Conor and I met back at the Weingartz open house (our local dealer) 2 years ago, and we kept in touch ever since. It's been awesome hearing the growth of his lawn care business and how he started with basically nothing, and to see where he's at today.
I asked Greg if we could interview his son Conor and share a little bit of his story, and Greg said sure! Conor definitely is kicking butt at his age, and you can tell by the way he talks that he's very mature for his age and has a great head on his shoulders.
The reason I wanted to do this interview was, a lot of younger folks ask me how can they start a lawn care business, and make some extra money when they're younger. Similarly we've been getting parents sending emails in wanting to know how to encourage their kids with a business of their own!
I thought this was a great little interview with Conor and it was cool getting to catch up with him and his dad, and hear the updates on his business!
Leave a comment down below if you can and leave an encouraging word for this 14 year old entrepreneur! It's definitely tough at his age to start a business of your own, so I'm sure he would love to see the positive feedback and encouragement from all of you guys!

What’s up Brian, I appreciate the videos you put out. I just recently opened up or started a lawn business because my current job has been affected by the COVID-19. I am still working for my job and I needed to come up with something to supplement my income. I bought a used truck, got a mower and trimmer/edger as well. I am taking a huge risk . I have a partner but Not sure if he is invested as I am. I am a little discouraged I am 41 years old and I feel like I’m late in the game to learn. I am definitely out of my comfort zone doing what I consider LOL hard labor now from inside sales in an air conditioner atmosphere. I am feeling down on myself and I need to make this work. My family’s life depends on my work. One thing I am good at it sells and I am out there passing out flyers door-to-door in every opportunity I get. So I guess the reason why I’m messaging you this is the hope that you read it and hope that you respond and give me some advice that I need that maybe you can help me sooner then later.

I'm 14 and have about 30 accounts. I have a John deere tractor, two push mowers, two echo string trimmers, an echo stick edger, a redmax backpack blower, and a 5x8 trailer. My parents drive me around in a 3k dollar Chevy 4x4 since houses in my area are far apart and have big lawns. I've been doing it since I was 12 and started with a Honda push mower, a small weed wacker, and a broom. I plan on growing now that my mom has more time for driving me around more, hopefully, if everything goes well I will buy a Wright stander I this year

Hello Brian, I wanted to say this was a big encouragement to me. I am 16 and I am starting up my lawn care business. I have been in business for about three weeks now and I already have 3 regular lawn care clients (all of witch have other services they would like me to provide for them) and 4 other clients that want one stop service. Thanks to you I have learned a lot of tips to help get my name out there as well as help plan the way I want to run my business. I'm finally just now planning out my business after procrastinating for over a year. I'm 15, I'll have my license in December after I turn 16, and I started with an idea for a pet sitting business. I would really appreciate some advice, and some answers to my questions, such as: Should I offer both lawn mowing and pet sitting services when I go door to door or pass out flyers, or would offering both services be a turn-off since they are so different? I have a battery-powered backpack blower, a gas-powered weedwhacker, and a gas-powered sit-down mower, how do I transport them all, and how do I get around the potential problem of having to cross high traffic roads? What should my pricing model be, should I offer free first time services? How should I price my lawn service? Lastly, how far should I go to look professional, and what steps should I take to do so?

Good stuff man! I always loved cutting grass from the time I was little I use to follow behind my dad with one of those little plastic play mowers lol. I probably started cutting the grass when I was 8 or 9 with a push mower I cut my home property and my dad's warehouse lot. By 10 I was on the tractor at home. 13ish My dad bought a bigger warehouse with a 2acre lot so he bought a Exmark Lazer Z 48" man was I in heaven. At the time we didn't have a trailer so I could only use it at his property. Meantime at home, I was stuck using the garden tractor. I tried for a while to cut come neighbors but all the lots are 1acre+ so in the spring it became impossible to keep up with the spring growth. My parents are amazing people but they definitely didn't encourage me to expand or figure out a way to bring the Exmark home. Fast forward to after college the opportunity arose that a neighbor with a 2-acre lot needed someone to cut their grass. I bought myself a trailer... problem solved I was pretty happy with the extra $75 a week. Last season I saw the opportunity to add 4 more clients with 1 acre+ lots. I sold my dads exmark that I've been using for 14 years and bought myself a new lazer Z S 60". Safety is KEY one of my salesman at my company has a glass eye because something came up and hit him when he was mowing his lawn. I won't start any piece of equipment without some type of ear protection and glasses. I would just caution any kids that are looking to get into this realize you are making a commitment to your customers. There will be times when your friends want to hang out or some other after-school function and you're going to have to decline in order to take care of your customers. Your eyes will need to be glued to the weather forecast. If you can do that you will come out of high school or even college with a better work ethic then any of your peers. OH and one last thing just because your young don't give people discounts just because you're young. Try to find out what other lawn companies are charging and charge that or more.

Yup I remember starting with a 16” push mower. Still can’t believe some of the hell class overgrown lawns I did with that thing. Awesome young hustler, proud of you Conor! Always be saving a good chunk of your money for when you finally leave home and go off on your own a few years down the road. And try to stay away from debt as much as possible. And keep listening to wise people like Brian who has been exactly where you are now.

Nice video. My son started around 11 or 12 doing yard work for the neighbors on our cul-de-sac. You can start young, have fun, and grow the business.

I'm 16, been doing this for 2 years, and run a gravely compact pro, echo srm 210, and upgrading to the new br800. Man I've ran into the same problems as a younger business owner with clients. Buying my first truck in a few weeks now so time to take it to the next level! Check out my RU-vid channel too

Good for you kid and keep it up! You should be very proud dad👍 but it's soooo nice to see a 14 year old teenager getting outside providing a labor kind of service making money. While his buddies are playing video games never going outside to cut their parents grass, shovel their snow, or having fun..your gonna make it far in life with much success big man that's for sure. Especially with the mindset and drive you have at thus age. F'n awesome.
