For Vanquish, cigarette thing actually had other use than looking cool. Robots there track heat, so throwing cigarette would actually create slight distraction, as robots look at the heat source. Also in original Metal Gear Solid you could smoke to reveal lasers, which was also pretty useless, because you got thermal googles early enough to not really need to smoke and thermal goggles were way better for that. Also for funny tips, UbiSoft actually "borrowed" theirs from World of Warcraft, where you had same tip on loading screen well before UbiSoft put it there. Dunno if WoW was original source of it. Also about Metal Gear one, I think it had purpose, since if I remember correctly, wasn't that the game where you had to dig bullet out and disinfect the wound? Like only Kojima could make that work and be good. :-D Also that F to pay respect one, I always imagined there being one developer who mad it and is like "I tried" while looking like that sad cat giving everyone thumb up for the jokes... :-D But yeah, it was time when developers wanted to make cinematics more engaging by having you hit QTEs. Problem only way that now instead of just relaxing and enjoying cinematic or it being emotional, you were constantly at ready to hit QTEs, since some games even made them timed, so I was very happy for that to be gone. Like let me just get invested in what is happening. Also it didn't help that by default some of them contained keys pretty far from where you usually have hands, like they expect you to have third hand.... though some console ports didn't need QTEs, some just had gameplay controls like you need three hands. And that was reason why I bought gamepad... got tired of having to change them and figuring out what will work for me.
