I love the life hack videos, but I'm starting to think it actually should be called, "Famous Author's hands can type novels, but not much else variety minute"
Can we rename these "John Green is bad at crafts" instead of pretending this is even about life hacks anymore? I mean, I'm totally on board with "John Green is bad at crafts" as a regular feature, I don't think we need any pretense.
She’s shown up once or twice. Most people probably aren’t even aware she’s a woman. You’d be amazed how long I thought she was a guy. That said, if I remember right she’s a pretty brunette.
Jakub Świtalski I actually am from Israel, and Halloween isn't banned here :D There are Christians who live in Israel and celebrate it. People are welcome to celebrate their holidays. All I meant was that in my particular area there's no trick or treating or pumpkin carving and such.
Miriam Lylac Strange, because here in the US a lot of Christians claim Halloween celebrates evil and witchcraft so they boycott the whole thing and ruin their children's lives
SteelBollocks If a silly cosplay day where you dress up as capitalist cash-ins can make those christians lose faith, they should seek proper spiritual guidance.
The cookie cutter thing is usually much more effective with metal cookie cutters, which just work better on thicker things anyway generally. Also, I could have told you the blood would taste nasty. Edible does not mean tasty
John keeps impressing me with how willingly he puts questionable food in his mouth. The main things that surprise me are how committed he is (at the start), how much he tries and how surprised he always is that it is terrible i.e. the fake blood. Love ya John!
missmyidahome golden syrup is a delicious sugar syrup from the UK. I imagine corn syrup was just a poor substitute. The fake blood of this recipe called Kensington gore. Mark Gatiss has a nice video on how to make it properly.
izziexxx He used Karo syrup which I have only seen as corn syrup. Plus it was clear like corn syrup and golden syrup after some googling isnt clear from what I saw..though I could be wrong.
Jakub Świtalski Thats why I was confused. It seems like and odd word choice since a good portion of their audience is American, they are American and nothing we have reference to. Also its not what he used so say "Corn syrup which is similar to Golden Syrup" . After all they us the US Standard system and metric through words or animation on the the screen.
Still, pumpkins are pretty tough. Depending on the type, you could probably use one as a weapon. If your metal cookie cutter is pretty sharp then I can see it, but don't forget, cookie cutters are flat and pumpkins are round, so you might not get a great result anyway.
definitely! Carved some yesterday with star shaped eyes using metal cookie cutter and a perfect circular nose with an apple corer, even a metal melon baller woukd do something better than the plastic cutters
I used to make the lollipop ghosts when I was a kid but we used Kleenex instead of coffee filters, so that works too! Also the cookie cutter thing can work if you use a metal cookie cutter and as long as the pumpkin isn't too thick. They actually used to sell kits specifically for pumpkins with metal cookie cutters a wooden mallet for driving them in, though I think those cookie cutters might have had teeth to make it easier.
for the spider cookies. Instead of trying to draw them on when they're cool take a tooth pick and spread some of the chocolate from a few chips to make the spiders legs.
Here's a hack: If you don't want to buy candy, don't want to be bothered/don't like kids, put an empty bowl on your porch and leave a note that says "Out trick or treating! Please take one! :) ". They won't ring the door bell because you're 'not home'.
Our theatre used two types of homemade blood. Detergent blood was made with clear laundry detergent and food coloring. Good texture and a couple drops of green FC make the fake blood less alarmingly red if you don't want fresh blood. This one worked well in blood packs, and was naturally much easier to wash out of costumes. For edible blood we just used corn syrup and food coloring, no other ingredients. Again, a little green will help make the red look less bright if that isn't what you want.
That recipe for fake edible blood is legit how I was taught to make blood in both my middle school teacher class AND my Theater Make Up class in college that I took as an elective.
That 2nd hack is doable. I did it with the kids I used to teach last year. I bought the mini glow sticks from the dollar tree. Cracked them. Blew up light colored balloons and put a couple sticks in. Then I tied them off, turned off the light so they could see their balloons glow. They had a blast!
You can also use much smaller glowsticks for the balloons. Also, for the spider cookies - Use a toothpick while the cookies are JUST out of the oven (be careful!) so that you can 'spread' the melt-y chips into legs.
When I was a kid, the local public library used to have the ghost-lollipops in between books in the children's section. Haven't thought about those in a while.
I only watch these life hacks videos so I can laugh endlessly at John's incompetence at performing some pretty non-complicated tasks. His whole attempt at trying to be dexterous is a big FAIL! And yet very entertaining! Keep it up! :D
My Halloween life hack is to convince your children that there is such a thing as a candy tax after trick or treating. It only works when the kids are little though.
So I learned from the Great British Bake Off that cornflour in British English means corn starch, so I think the fake blood life hack meant to use corn starch rather than flour made from ground corn.
I have actually made the hand shaped ice cubes with rubber surgical gloves before, and it was very successful for me. I think it is all a matter of how you go to remove the glove from the ice hand
