Originally, quilts were made from odd bits of fabric or old clothes. I've read so many stories written from letters found from young married women way out in the middle of nowhere. They were lonely,sad and questioned how long their sanity would last in such desolation. Then a letter and package arrived from home. Mom, sisters,aunts, and grandmothers sent fabric for the making of a quilt. Hope. The young woman was revived. She was once more connected to home. It didn't matter she was living in a sod house. Her husband was gone all day hunting or plowing. A lone coyote would trot by. Or a line of Native Americans walked by also out hunting. She was happy planning and drawing patterns for her quilt. I wonder if the quilt still survives today?

Who knows. There is a few old quilt archives that can be seen in photos with some background. I forgot the website but seen it a few years ago.

My mother and both my younger brothers are left handed, none of them can tell right from left. My son is also a lefty, but I drilled left and right into him by the time he was three. He has never made that mistake. To my mind, it's a basic lifeskill that needs to be taught as soon as kids are able.
