..and here I am, a black Brazilian with African ancestors due to the Portuguese slavery trade. It is good to show why there are black people in Brazil. Believe me, some people are still surprised when they get to know this fact. I remember my great-grandmother once told me that her mother or grandmother, not sure, was a slave and she was born during a law that was passed freeing all slaver's newborns from 1871 on. Slavery trade was and still is the main reason behind racism, even after so many centuries. It is high time we moved on.

I lived in a shared house, we had a room going, a very quiet and nervous man moved into the room. He didn't speak any English so I spoke to him and he spoke to me through a phone app. His story brought tears to my eyes. He was from Romania, he was told that there was a better life in England. As soon as he came into the country he had his passport and all belongings taken, they set him to work washing dishes in a restaurant, he asked for pay and they beat him. His bed was the floor in the kitchen. Good people finally raided the place and got him and several others out.

Many of the wealthy families today made their money either in the slave trade or using the slaves to make their fortunes in cotton, tobacco, sugar, etc. They are the same families who consider themselves to be the first Americans and think very highly of themselves like Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Spanish and French were particularly brutal. The average lifespan of a slave in Saint Domingue (now Haiti) after arrival was three years, for born in the colony it was fifteen years. The French found it 2as cheaper to work slaves to an early death on meager substinence and import new ones rather than take better care of them. Hence the Revolution

I lived in Dakar Senegal for two years. The infamous “Door of no Return” is just off shore from Dakar. The role of West Africa in slavery is openly discussed and understood. We were made aware, as this clip points out, there are currently more “legal” slaves in Africa then were ever exported. While historians lament the horrible treatment of Africans enslaved in the US, I am amazed at the tolerance of Americans of African descent to modern slavery. It was precisely that tolerance in the pre-civil war history that allowed slavery to continue.
@jeffnwobodo8671

Slavery practiced in america and slavery in Africa were very distinctly different. Slavery in Africa wasn't as cruel as that in america bcs it wasn't bordered on racism this is the fundament difference, its the difference between the way White treated White slaves and the the way they treated black or native American slaves. Most slaves in Africa weren't slaves for ever and bought their freedom, some if good were settled by their masters, read of king jaja of okpobo. There were usually no chains used. In most cases they weren't seen as less humans.

@@jeffnwobodo8671 BULL When shipped to the Muslims or India think they were freed? Look up the Moors who invaded S Europe in 711 AD, 800 years before the trans Atlantic slave trade. The Moors occupied Spain for hundreds of years and sent millions of Europeans (mostly women) as slaves to Africa. Lets do some math, America took in 400,000 slaves, in less than 400 years they became 40 million or grew 100X. Using the same math if the Moors had left JUST 1 million of the millions of European slaves in Europe what would these 1 million have grow to in 800 years? That would be 100X 1 million or 100 million in 400 years, 100x 100 million or BILLIONS in the next 400 years. Would Europeans have needed any African slaves if there had been even 1 billion more Europeans before the trans Atlantic slave trade started? They would have used poor whites to settle the Americas. White slavery by Africans caused the need for black slavery. Lets not ignore that before and during most of the trans Atlantic slave trade, Africans raided the coasts of Europe as far N as Iceland to get (mostly) women with light hair, eyes and skin. Sounds RACIST to me. When WE won the 1 ST Barbary War in 1805 (remember this date) they were forced to stop taking NEW European slaves. In 1807 (2 years later) England and America CHOSE to stop taking NEW African Slaves. Proof white and black slave trade were tied together. Just a simple question, in America blacks have their own communities, so what happened to the decedents of the MANY MILLIONS of white slaves that ended up in Africa over at least 1,300 years? Shouldn't white slaves have spread to make up the majority the population in many decedents Africans treated their slaves FAR WORSE than Europeans treated African slaves. Look up the reason for the Second Barbary war and ask yourself did taking American & Europeans ships and crew hostage and ransoming them back (sound familiar) after losing the 1st Barbary War might be the reason for colonization of Africa? European countries couldn't afford to gather allies, ships and military to go back to fight a ground war in Africa every 7 or so years to force Africans TO LEAVE US ALONE. Once 1 European country had a colony it forced others to stay and keep a colony too. Look up the West African Squadron, when it started (remember that date?) and for how many decades England (later joined by America) were ships sent to stop slaves from being shipped from West Africa to the Americas. When they found slaves they returned them to Africa. After ending slavery in our own countries should white men have minded our own business or were we right to have used Trade and the threat of force to get countries and other races to end slavery?

@@JarthenGreenmeadow we're talking about institutionalized slavery and by the way slavery still exist every where if you don't know what the definition of slavery is. Again American slavery is very distinct from slavery in Africa bcs it was based on racism. Every medium was used to spread and imprint the lie that blacks where less humans since the deceleration of independence states that all humans are equal before and must be treated equally. Mind you I said american slavery. Even slavery in the Caribbeans was different from American slavery they were slaves but not seen as less human read history, that is why despite the large slavery the racism today isn't high in most Caribbean countries. Do your research and confirm what I just said. Slaves in Africa where like whites slaves they were not dehumanized, the that is why today no white slaves suffers the effect of slavery but Blacks are still suffering the effects in America and around the world till date. African slaves were not dehumanized the could become children of their masters they could become kings I said read of king jaja, they usually didn't stay slaves for ever they were well fed and protected and usually settled some even choose not to be free, they could contest for political title, they usually were not second class citizens. Slavery is bad and terrible and I'm in no wat justifying any form, but clarifying why the damage of the American slavery was so severe, it didn't just affect a tribe, country or community but it's a stigma on an entire race which Eco's loud till date.

It is more likely the attitude and lack of self responsibility.

More than 1 million of them were either beaten, starved, tortured, or worked to death. The men worked in the same conditions as the trans atlantic slave trade and the women were made into sex slaves. There is a story that during the Roman Republic, the Senate discussed bringing in a law to make every slave wear an armband so that people would know who was a slave and who wasn't. The law was rejected because they would realise how many of them there were. That story alone implies that race was not a major factor in Roman slavery.

Slavery is pure evil. It is not the plan of a loving God above for His children... What is far less known, is slavery of other human races, besides black. God created man and woman, to be happy, to have joy. Not to abuse each other, in any way shape or form. Love thy neighbor as thyself. Do unto others, as you would like them to be doing unto you. This world can be a sad wicked place.

@mr fantastic No, it actually didn't. In the Bible, even if someone needed to work off a debt they were freed during the year of Jubilee and property restored to them. Also, there is no record of widespread slavery in Israelite society...ever!. Also, it was Christians - based on the Bible - who were the motor behind ending the practice that existed for thousands of years and was considered normal. I am afraid you have bad information, my friend.
@donaldwilliamfry
@donaldwilliamfry 3 года назад
@mr fantastic Been through it quite a few times. What do you have in mind? I know of no racist things - ever. You have some passage in mind? Judges gets pretty bad, but the point is that when people leave God, raunchy things happen. Note the last verse "Everyone did what was right in their own eyes." I notice you didn't speak to the reality that it was Christians that were responsible for the end of slavery.

@@donaldwilliamfry How about Ephesians 6:5-8 Paul states, “Slaves, be obedient to your human masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ” which is Paul instructing slaves to obey their master. It's not talking about color of skin, but it is condoning slavery. 1 Peter 2:18 Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh." There are more. But I don't believe God ever condoned slavery, but the people who wrote those verses obviously did - which is why I personally pick and choose from it.
@donaldwilliamfry
@donaldwilliamfry 3 года назад
@@alexakl6445 Yes, but he did not affirm slavery. In fact, you will notice in the book of Philemon Paul argued for a slave. This is a spiritual point that you will need to be in contact with God to understand. We are all in slavery until we come to know Christ. That is the ultimate slavery. Individual slave revolts as justified as they are have a very poor track record in the long term. Freeing oneself politically while still being in bondage spiritually is a loser (Haiti is a good example). A Christian waits for a movement of God to bring freedom - like what happened with the Wilberforce movement in 18th century England. These bring both political and spiritual freedom. It is good to let God be the active agent, which is what Paul is talking about here. I remind you, when Paul wrote this well over 1/2 of the Roman empire was enslaved. Changing the message to one of political revolt would have killed the Christian movement before it started. Better to wait on God and be faithful - which was Paul's advice. I hope in sharing this I am not in violation of Matthew 7:6. I trust you asked in good faith.

@oShane Kasper No. I did not imply that. I do not support reparations. But not because no one should ever owe reparations. But because it is logistically impossible, and because no actual immediate family of slaves are alive anymore. It is not possible to determine on what basis to give it. Individual Americans indeed do not owe reparations or apology to descendants of whoever their ancestors MAY have enslaved or abused. It is just impossible to track who exactly is a descendant of slave owners except for a small portion of people who somehow kept every record. Also because a lot of entirely new family lines arrived to United States since after the Civil War. BUT the United States Government may owe something since it is continuous legal entity which was around at the time of slavery after 1776 If you are implying that since , like I said, black people do not owe a thank you to anyone, then no white should owe an apology, you probably imply different logic from mine. The government does. Individuals do not. That is simply for the reason that we do not jail or transfer debts to children of people who committed crimes or took too much credit they weren't able to pay for. But what mostly white white, but not only white, Americans are morally obligated to do is to acknowledge that as a group black Americans did indeed suffer more, and are still suffering more today. That isn't just a "leftist opinion". Its a demonstrable fact that can be shown by numbers and existing laws, and that whites, GENERALLY speaking, did have it better than either blacks or the immigrants who came to the US from non-anglo saxon countries.

Refrain: My eyes are getting blinded And I cannot see the way, Hark! there's somebody knocking at the door, Oh! I hear the angels calling And I see my Nelly Gray, Farewell to the old Kentucky shore. During WWII, when Germany started loosing, they forced young men from occupied countries to go to Germany to work in their factories. I would call that slavery as well. My grandmother was able to keep my uncle out of this only by bribing hungry German military with food. Another practise that happened in those years: German souldiers who were kept prisoner of war by the Russians, but also German civilians, were transported to Siberia and were forced to work in lead mines, under horrible conditions. I tend to call see that as slavery as well. In Asia during WWII, prisoners from different countries were forced to build railways. This happened all between 1940 - 45. An interesting short film. The slaves of the Roman empire, the slaves of the Mongol empire certainly too made a contribution to the horrors. The Arabs were dealing in slavery long before the 7th century. Let us not forget that there are many more lands and periods of history that have been exposed to such injustices too.

%100 true. If we were truly free we would be able to work until we could buy our own property and have a self sustaining farm and provide everything we need for ourselves, but we can't. You never own property, only rent it. It's impossible to own even a small farm without having a source of income to pay taxes every year for something you supposedly own. It's refreshing to see somebody else that can see that slavery was never abolished, nobody is truly free.
@justinbaker8873
@justinbaker8873 6 лет назад
I would love to live in the woods and be free,but I can't. I would either be trespassing on someone's property or evading taxes. Either way without income I wouldn't be able to pay the taxes or fines. The people that don't work or pay taxes are going to have a very hard time when the government runs out of money. They may not be slaves in the traditional sense, but they are being used to speed up our collapse. Just because someone doesn't work doesn't mean they aren't being used and taken advantage of.We are over 17 trillion in debt not including unfunded liabilities. Technically we have been bankrupt for a long time. A lot of bad things are going to happen when the government can no longer hand out checks. Very good people are capable of doing very bad things when they are starving. Just look at what's been happening in Venezuela, socialism doesn't work. The only people that prosper are politicians and their friends and family, everybody else starves. You can only spend other people's money for so long before it runs out. If everybody quits working because they can get a check for nothing, there is nobody left to produce goods to create any income. Don't get me wrong though, we still have a way better life than people in other countries that are still slaves in the traditional sense, but our way of life as we know it might not last as long as you would hope.
@justinbaker8873
@justinbaker8873 6 лет назад
you are absolutely right, nobody understands what freedom is anymore. There is no such thing. No liberty, no justice either. If you even have the courage to fight for it you'll more than likely lose. But I have to admit with the free flow of information and truth things will change for the better. Corruption is finally being exposed, before it was just called conspiracy theories but now everything people do and say is on record. It's very hard for politicians to say something they said was taken out of context when you can google or look on youtube to see their entire speech unedited and come to your own conclusion to what was really said. Times are changing, it will be rough for a while, but most people are good and have their hearts in the right place. Refuse to let politicians divide you from your neighbors and community, only way we can win. Refuse division!! It's divide and conquer, s country that cannot be divided cannot be conquered.

Majestic Yeah those darn Democrats and their racist philosophy. Thankfully the Republicans put an end to Slavery in the United States. It is no wonder why the Democratic Party hates the Republican Party, they took away their slaves and subsequently trained them in self defense via the N.R.A so that the Democrats couldn't force ex slaves back onto Democratic slave plantations.

This video has opened my eyes more about slavery! I had NO idea!! I hate even just thinking about slavery for ANY race or culture! All people should be treated the same way! Even before I watched this video and only thought that 'blacks' were used for slavery, which is why I thought some 'white' people and some 'black' people were still racist against each other. Even now how some people are still racist upsets me! I will never understand why some people treat others differently just because of different skin color or culture. :(

Sadly, based on what I see and witness, this is true! Plus you don't even know how many times I hear somebody say 'you're racist!' at work. This is usually not towards me but I've heard it at least once towards me. 'Umm...I'm actually not racist. I'm just doing my job. Sorry if you don't like it'. A good amount of black people throw that crap at me and other non-black people. And honestly, I think that is a reason why a few people ARE racist. They're sick and tired of being accused as being racist, that they become racist!! At least I wouldn't be surprised if that has happened! I personally have no problem with anybody based on race and culture, like I said in my post. But you know. This is life. :/

I think part of this is a uniquely U.S. construct. Racism and prejudice is systemic everywhere, but I would contend that in the U.S it is seeped more into daily, seemingly mundane racism. A dark-skinned person getting helped at a store, the gas station, crossing the street or struggling to recall your bike lock combination to unlock it. Any of these often yield automatic alarms here among citizens on the street, let alone the police. If I didn't have darker-complexioned family members telling me otherwise, I'd hardly believe it myself. But it is true. And sad. I read a sad article about an affluent Black businessman who resorted to putting a stuffed animal in the back window of his luxury sedan so cops would quit pulling him over under some false pretense and checking for drugs. That's just wrong. Also, please get it straight. Yes, anyone and everyone can be guilty of having prejudices against others. No one is exempt. However, racism can only come from the prevailing power constructs within a given system. That construct in Western culture is European-derived, or in today's vernacular, white people. So while prejudice and racism ARE related terms, they not interchangeable ones.

There's evidence that most of the pyramids were built by free men. Documents on pottery have been found showing how much businesses were being paid to contribute to the projects. At the time the Egyptians were building pyramids, they were also the first people to brew beer, which they sold to the thirsty construction workers. There was even one occasion when workers went on strike because they had not been paid.

Absolutely, I get so tired of people acting like slavery is an "American shame". The Portuguese and Spanish were involved in the slave trade. (with some records dating back to 1520) long before the British set foot in what is now the United States. In the Roman empire for example, 1 out of 5 people was a slave. In fact for most of history slavery wasn't considered wrong. So far from being an "American problem" slavery was worldwide shame.

7;03 So true. I'm Caribbean and the words used in our dialect are a combination of words from various African countries. We have no idea of what exact countries it's from; it's just passed down from our enslaved ancestors. Thanks to the internet, we are making connections. In Trinidad, we have a dish called CouCou. A dish similar to that is eaten in Nigeria & Ghana, but they call it FuFu. We drink the same Sorrell that our African cousins drink and we turned slave food like Ox Tails into a delicacy. Also, thanks to DNA technology, I'm connecting with African family members. The Atlantic Slave trade tore families apart, but our DNA is reuniting us! Meeting my new African cousins is a joyous feeling that I can't describe! 🙌🏾🎉

abolition of slavery has nothing to do with morality, it was a fact that the slavers had benefited and made enough money to convert slavery into employment contract for the ex salves, in law, still called master servant relationship, employers can still mistreat people as to working hours and pay, so people still struggle to survive, that is why we have the unions
