A Tye Dye Movie By Brain O'Donnell Starring Actual "Deadheads" "Not The Way The Press Portrays Us"
Covering 10 years, this 60 minute art documentary takes an inside look at the artisans, magicians, musicians, and lunatics that make up this cult of devotees, deadicated to a band that originated in 1965. Why these fans leave their schools, families and jobs to be part of these ritualistic tribal celebrations of dance, drugs and community, is a 20th century American cultural phenomenon captured here in this time capsuled video tape.

I love watching and listening to people play music. Even if the guitar is out of tune, or they aren't great, it's still nice to see. Most of these musicians are playing from the heart and it shows.

This is the best Grateful Head documentary yet! Master editing. It takes us from the street, with a gatekeeper of wisdom, to the Dead Lot, to the show. It's just like being there again. Walking through the perimeter of guitarists and vendors, to then enter the drum circle. Which then leads past more vendors and, finally, to the band itself. Recognizing people from the '89 tour is a heartfelt bonus. Especially the piano player, Johnny, at ~54:00. I would listen to and watch him play hundreds of times at the Pike Street Market, where I was vending apples and almonds for a few years.

I love this SO MUCH, it encapsulated so much of the jovial gypsy spirit of the nomadic tribal bohemians that were the cultural phenomenon that is everything that The Grateful Dead symbolized and that which it was born from. I just love the energy that this documentary exhibits, with it's soundtrack consisting pretty much of "music from The Lot". And all it's weird and magical majesty!

thank you Brian. This is so wonderful. not many cameras around 85`-89 I remember in the parking lot at Buffalo ` 87 or `88 someone pulled out a camera and people freaked out. putting their hands in front of their faces - yelling `dont do that man...` some of them probably needed anonymity. there always rumors going around the feds were undercover as deadheads taking pictures. could be true who knows. could you imagine now hahah. so glad there were people like you.

I only saw the dead 1x, and it at deercreek, and I will never forget it. Smoked pot and hash up in the lawn, dropped one hit of blotter, then 45 min later, wandered back down towards my friend and his mom. Kind of hard to turn down acid from a really beautiful dead head girl, and she went to Carmel High School! I miss you Michelle!!! We had just finished our Sophmore year in HS..:-)

St. Pete 1988 (shown near the beginning) was one of my best GD experiences. The city cleared several blocks for us to camp. The first game of the world series was played over the PA during intermission and they messed with us by mixing in a little "Who's on first" from the Abbott & Costello routine.

The thing about most drum circles is they really sucked. Too many people just banging out something. I get the communal part, the participation part, But if 3 guys were standing around playing guitars, 10 people who dont know how to play guitar wont come up and start playing. Sometime the circles could work, others were abysmal. true the scene got grimy. Dead Company scene is good

I just started going back in time and trying to remember what true freedom was like before life got hectic w wife, kids, business, etc. (Love my wife and kids)I only got to see em around a dozen times. All I can say is how thankful I am to witness that circus.watching the energy flow out of everyone at rfk 93 and called althea down on the field with a dude and his girlfriend from Maryland that smoked me out w some strait out sk1. Hopefully them Maryland folks remember that too. Thanks boys for the one and only experiences that the luckiest humans on earth got to witness. Still a hippie Gipsy at heart. Forever stamped

Remarkable how how there are virtually no tattoos, on guys and especially the women, and absolutely ZERO cell phones. What a time to be alive!

Culturally generations change around every seven years or so. That would make most of the young people in this video third generation deadheads.

The best burrito I ever had in my entire life was from a deadhead burrito stand in Buckeye Lake Ohio 1994! Or was it 95? One of them. Whenever I saw them in a big city all you had to do was follow the smell as soon as you came out of the subway!

I was in a Juvie facility with a Deadhead. Roommate. Name was Rob . Artist, tye dyed, tall bearded hippie kid. Had Doobie's in his colored pencils case! Lol. NFI North, Jefferson NH 92 or 93. It was a "shelter" for kids in between court placements. Wouldnt have been so rough if any of us knew what was going on or what was going to happen to us. I smile so I guess it was cool. God bless deadheads with dope hidden in their art supplies!

Man, there is nothing like this. So thankful I found a scene in Ohio like this. Look up Coyote Grove northwest Ohio. There is so much love and healing to be found. I'll always feed a starving hippie lol.
