Starting a painting in a complicated, busy landscape can be challenging. To do this I use mark making with the intent of capturing the energy and rhythm of the landscape and to provide a structure for the painting.
In this video I show you five different landscapes at our lake cottage in the Boreal Forest where I do my initial mark making en plein air and then go to my temporary lake studio to finish the painting.
This forest is dense and rocky and it’s easy to become disoriented ( this happened to me once when I wandered too far from the cottage to paint). What I don’t show you in the video is how I went for a walk each morning to find a place to paint, which include a place to sit before I even start.
