Almost right on the heels of the PNSO Daspletosaurus, Haolonggood follows up with its own offering. And what a Daspletosaurus this is!
The form is more in keeping with tyrannosaurid bauplan, and the pattern is amazing, and the colour is incredibly well applied. And what's more, thisone has lips! So in many areas it's going to be a sure winner.
Check out both colour variants here!

If this body switched heads with PNSO's, we'd have the perfect Daspletosaurus

i like the size as pete III (the biggest Daspletosaurus found) was around 11m long and around 75% complete - it would have weighed around 4 tons. amazing review as always!

Thank you for all your reviews, they are the only reviews i watch on dinos! I have not a single haolonggood model on display, there is always something irking or incorrect enough to not buy them. Rumor says pnso will venture into large sauropod territory! I look at 3D printed artists’ models for small dinosaurs, like paleokhris from chile
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 9 месяцев назад
Wow thank you for your support! Glad you like my presentation content! Well, I have to say that nothing would make me happier than to have PNSO offer large sauropods again! Though really at this point, PNSO could offer _any_ dinosaur that isn't a carnosaur and I would be absolutely delighted! Paleokrhis is awesome! But I can't paint to save my life, so I can't do anything with them. Do you know if he sells finished models or just the white unpainted kits?

Agreed with the other comments saying that HLG still has a ways to go with their theropods - the head sculpt on these Daspletosauruses still look slightly off to me, especially when compared to PNSO's sculpts. That being said, HLG's herbivores are absolutely stellar, and I believe they will one day reach PNSO levels of sculpting for their theropods.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 9 месяцев назад
If they improve as much as they have, they could! Right now, I believe they are already at the level PNSO was at a couple years ago, if not better. So if they continue on this trajectory, who knows how far they'll go! It's the scientific accuracy that seems elusive!

@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 9 месяцев назад

First of all, I must thank Haolonggood for their hard work and dedication. Because compared this Daspletosaurus to their Allosaurus, I think they evolved a lot within this short period. But still, I have some issues with this figure. The gap between gum and lips is quite big. It looks like this Daspletosaurus doesn't have gums at all. So that makes the lips so artificial. And the head sculpt is well, I'm not a big fan. But the overall body looks so amazing. Thank you so much for this amazing review, my dear sir. Keep it up ❤

Love hearing your insightful comments! Well, I think that HLG are fast catching up. For all the faults this one still has, compare it to their Allosaurus, or even worse, their T Rex last year! I think they are going to keep on coming and growing with leaps and bounds! 😊

I am quite interested with this offering. The head definitely has issues that the PNSO offering doesn't (prognathism, the lacrimal crests) but also has lips. The proportions are also just so much better, especially with mass looking more like an animal close to 3 tonnes. Fingers crossed they do replace the t.rex, that would be a worthwhile purchase to add to the growing collection of tyrannosaur figures. Edit: this is somewhat confusingly worded, the intent was to say that the haolongood offering is the better proportioned of the two (excluding the head)
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 9 месяцев назад
I'm still trying to find a good adult skeletal on Daspletosaurus, and very curious to see how PNSO arrived at its representation. The making of video from Zhao Chuang didn't help much. This one from HLG just feels more 'correct' somehow.
@TyrannosaurusRex5027
@TyrannosaurusRex5027 9 месяцев назад
@@DinosDragons my best guess with pnso is that they probably used a less rigorous skeletal, or perhaps followed an older mount at a museum would be my guess. Either way the end result is that the haolongood is much better proportioned outside of the head, with the haolongood offering being much more up to date.

@theimmortaleye7511 Thank you! As to the labial scales, we do know of course that tyrannosaurids have them based on osteological correlates on the maxilla, but it's the way they were sculpted here.. perhaps that very rectangular, that just doesn't sit right with me. The eyes are a puzzle. I like they are making the effort, but just painting the whole thing black for example, would look better.

I really like the green, but I also prefer the texturing on the PNSO model. It looks less toy-like to me than the Haolonggood. I have collected most of PNSO's Theropod's, and it does make me a bit sad now seeing they will probably be considered obsolete due to the lipless look, but good for those jumping on the collecting train late in the game. They just released images of a Saurophaganax, which I think confirms they are in fact sticking with lips from here on out.
@theimmortaleye7511
@theimmortaleye7511 9 месяцев назад
I wouldnt call them obsolete just for no lips , almost 90 percent of museums still use extremely outdated dinosaur art, depictions and facts due to low budgets often . Compared to that these figures still fair amazing since low shrinkwrapping, no full diaper syndrome etc.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 9 месяцев назад
@overcookedsoul6823 I think it's too early to ring the bell on lips, even though I personally started to incline that way a year or so ago. But as long as we don't find a mummy, there will always be people who don't believe in them. It really boils down to your personal preference. I like scientific accuracy, but I can also enjoy a model for the quality sculpting and paint applications as well. So I'm not selling Wilson yet! 🤣
@firegator6853
@firegator6853 9 месяцев назад
this is a very beautiful figure, some people refer to it as daspletosaurus horneri insted because of the location of the crests and just assume its just extensive keratin amount, also beautiful coloration in both versions personally im happy with the pnso one though the only thing i prefer more in the haolonggood one is the presence of extra oral tissue and that is too little of a reason for me to get it, also since i mentioned pnso one i have seen comparisons and it looks a lot like Daspletosaurus Wilsoni that was described earlier this year and about the safari ltd one that one i have seen being refered as a true daspletosaurus torosus if these are true then its actually impressive that we got all 3 species in figure form
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 9 месяцев назад
Unfortunately I can't comment on this too intelligently as I have not seen enough skulls and in fact, even the actual bauplan of this animal is a mystery to me. When PNSO came out with their Daspletosaurus, I realized just how little I knew, and how hard the information I needed was to come by. That said, the lacrimal cornual process being reduced in _horneri_, and I find it hard to imagine a build up that would lead to a horn with its apex forming directly over the eye. The only way if the keratin over the postorbital somehow fused with that over the lacrimal to create this 'central' spike' in the HLG.

@AndyCog_1710
@AndyCog_1710 9 месяцев назад
If you look carefully at the skull, you’ll notice this is a D. horneri, not D. torosus as HLG called it. Notice the big horns on top and behind the eyes, which neither D. torosus nor D. wilsoni have but D. horneri does.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment! I made reference only with respect to HLG's claim as D. _torosus_ , so didn't speculate further on what other species it could be. The one behind the eyes is the cornual process of the postorbital. But the anterior (front) margin of its base clearly originates on that bone, while HLG's anterior base margin clearly starts before this, almost the centre of the orbit. I don't know that you meant, but there are no horns that originate on top of the eyes of _horneri_ either. D. _horneri's_ lacrimal cornual process is much reduced, and likely bore small keratinous horns only. Given their prominence on the model, I therefore assumed their placement didn't mean HLG was going for any particular species, but simply made an error in the positioning what it intended to be the lacrimal horns. Their size suggests to me HLG was indeed thinking of _torosus_ or at least _wilsoni_ .
@AndyCog_1710
@AndyCog_1710 9 месяцев назад
@@DinosDragons thanks goes to you! :) Sorry, I should have explained myself better. I was trying to say that HLG’s take could be assigned to D. horneri because the lacrimals on HLG’s figure don’t seem to be very apparent, whereas the cornual process of the postorbital is fairly accentuated. On that sense, it probably matches D. horneri better than either of the 2 other species. Or at least that’s what I like to think, rather than thinking it’s an inaccuracy. 😅 That would be a shame (well, it already is because it doesn’t really match D. torosus’ skull), honestly. The ones that really are D. torosus are Safari’s and the BotM. On another hand, brilliant review as always! I’m very torn between this HLG and Safari’s. I like that Safari unambiguously represents D. torosus, as that’s my favorite Daspletosaurus species, but I think the skull ornamentation could clearly use more keratin. But I prefer the bulkiness of HLG’s and the colors. Tough choice…

PNSO's Daspletosaurus still beats it out for me. The body sculpt is good and the colouring looks great but there's something about that head sculpt that looks cartoony and just throws me off, not to mention the several innacuracies (e.g. prognathism of the jaw, brow horns being behind the orbit, both digits being the same size). PNSO's offering just beats Haolonggood's out in scale detail, paint application, overall sculpting and just looks more like a real animal so I'm able to look past its slightly lankier proportions and the fact that it doesn't have lips.

@burfdaeboiTF2 Which is a puzzle for me because you'd think that of the tripod I always talk about Sculpt + Paint Application + Scientific accuracy, the accuracy part would be low-hanging fruit, particularly of dinosaurs like Allosaurus where you can find plenty of ready references online. And HLG has added the bonus leg of PRICE to boot. So I hope they can catch up. PNSO just has a _je ne sais quoi_ that hasn't been matched yet. If only they got rid of that boring colour palette!

Excellent review as always, ...this is a very good figure , I think the best theropod of haolonggood so far, but I still prefer the PNSO,... in general the sculpted is superior to this especially in the head, ...I don't like also the prognathism of Haolonggood when he has his mouth open,...the shape is in general that of a T-rex and the paint pattern is interesting. I have read that there is a particular study on the skull of daspletosaurus (I don't remember the author) that concludes that most likely this theropod didn't have lips due to the scaly structures similar to those of crocodiles that it presented in the jaw, I wanted to ask you if you have read anything about it.
